Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I wonder if anyone thinks NHS 111 should be testing me or if I'm worrying about nothing.

I have flu symptoms. Fever and dry cough. Since Sat. Feel generally yuck but not as bad as I did once with flu. No blocked nose

I've been in contact with someone who has come back from Italy but they haven't themselves got confirmation of virus but they too were at but unwell' just after I saw them about 10 days ago.

So I called 111 and ended up following their online assessment. They don't want to test because I haven't been to a country on their list or been in contact with a CONFIRMED case. Isn't this a bit daft?

Going by the government's advice, I could still be mingling with people. I'm not. Apart from my immediate family. I haven't left the house since I got ill.

But it makes me think the UK figures could be wildly wrong if they aren't testing people like me?

What do others think?

I do know I feel really pretty rotten 🤒 but I do have an underlying condition that tends to make viruses really painful

peachgreen · 10/03/2020 12:19

He did have a cough last night but it's gone - think he just swallowed the wrong way!

Cheeseismylife · 10/03/2020 12:19

@Newjez I don't mean to use as an antiviral, I just mean to give our immune systems a boost before coronavirus reaches my town! Max dose for vit D is huge, I'm not thinking any thing like that quantity.

@MotherOfDragonite I do see your point about London being a hub and having lots of cases. I was more reflecting on if there were any big underlying events that may have led to Italy having a particularly defined epicentre so much earlier than the rest of Europe.

The clusters of Chinese fashion workshops around Milan etc came to mind. Many people would have returned there after CNY, but then again there don’t seem to be many official reports about clusters within those communities.

The latest uptick in the U.K. after half term seems to have stemmed from ski trips to Italy. In our case, people have returned to all corners of the U.K. which might dilute the effects of the exodus. The extra cases in Hertfordshire after half term were reported mainly as returnees from Italy I thought? So not necessarily due to London as a hub exporting them.

I am wondering if this might be part of why the U.K. is seeming to progress somewhat slower than Italy in terms of daily increases. Though, as you say, our seemingly slower rate could also be down to testing or the lack of it.

Re school trips, caller on LBC this morning who is in the travel industry in Italy made a good point that if the school goes and the country goes into quarrantine how are the teachers going to feel about looking after 40 or so kids for an unknown period, how are they going to get transport back to the Uk? There may be an obvious answer but it's not something I'd considered.

Almost half of infected people show 'no or minimal symptoms'

Almost half of those who have tested positive for coronavirus in Italy show “no or minimal symptoms”, new figures have revealed.

Data released by the country’s National Institute of Health shows 45 per cent of patients do not exhibit anything more than mild symptoms.

One in 10 people with the illness display no symptoms at all.
The data also reveals that 22 per cent of infections have been detected in people aged between 19 and 50.

Not sure if this has been put on here yet.

Pukk, it is tricky because of course if covid 19 wasn't around, you would be thinking nothing of it because virus' are completely normal. Did your friend get tested, given they had symptoms and travelled, what was their result?

The bottom line is, they don't have the resources yet to test everyone so it has to be rationed. Keep yourself isolated and if anyone else in the immediate family develops symptoms, isolate them too. I really don't see what else you can do.

Just delurking to post this info about cleaning

www.ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/files/documents/coronavirus-SARS-CoV-2-guidance-environmental-cleaning-non-healthcare-facilities.pdf

and
www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(20)30046-3/fulltext which says
The analysis of 22 studies reveals that human coronaviruses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus or endemic human coronaviruses (HCoV) can persist on inanimate surfaces like metal, glass or plastic for up to 9 days, but can be efficiently inactivated by surface disinfection procedures with 62-71%ethanol, 0.5% hydrogen peroxide or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite within 1 minute. Other biocidal agents such as 0.05-0.2% benzalkonium chloride or 0.02% chlorhexidine digluconate are less effective.

I have a migraine coming on so won't paraphrase any info myself in case I make a mistake, but maybe someone else can.

Personally, I am wary of relying solely on the dettol type products that use benzalkonium chloride as their effective ingredient. But I have not been able to buy anything ethanol based so will be using strong degreasing cleaner/soap and hydrogen peroxide at home, and bleach if I really have to.

We have other illnesses so are staying at home as much as we can and being vigilant when we must go out.

KarenTookTheKids · 10/03/2020 12:31

OfWarren it will be a hard habit to break for some, lets not criticise people who are out trying to do their best.

I decided to not touch anything unnecessary yesterday whilst out and about and yet picked up an elderly lady's walking stick that she knocked over, helped another elderly lady pack her shopping, pressed the green smiley button for customer service rating on my way out. Its just habit!

FingonTheValiant · 10/03/2020 12:35

Forever - lots of insurers are saying they won’t cover costs in the US if it’s coronavirus related. The school need to look into that ASAP. I wouldn’t let my child go to the US regardless of the situation without full health coverage.

We’ve cancelled our trips and refunded parents in full. The school is taking the financial hit. My trip has only lost about 400 euros as our UK accommodation won’t refund the deposit, but did agree not to make us pay the 50% cancellation cost that we were liable for. But in total the school is going to lose around 20,000 euros. There’ll be some serious fundraising once this has calmed down I expect.

KarenTookTheKids · 10/03/2020 12:36

I am on a cruise FB group and no one plans on cancelling, the page has banned corona talk now in fact. They are all in denial. Apparently they think the worst that can happen is being stuck on the ship which they all think is no hardship as they love the ships so much Confused Given the average age of a cruiser is most likely around mid 60's, I find their lack of concern bizarre.

WhyNotMe40 · 10/03/2020 12:36

My neighbour, a retired educated professional in her 80s, is still planning on going on her next cruise in a couple of weeks, despite everything I've said that's on the news.
I don't understand it!

PurpleCalm · 10/03/2020 12:36

Ofwarren...

I posted on the preppers post - we have 2 close family members returning in a week from a world cruise. They aren't due to dock in Italy and were in Asia over 2 weeks ago. They've still travelled back through Europe though and are due to go on a Canaries cruise at the end of the month.

I have a few concerns - 1) I don't want my family seeing them for 2 weeks once they're home - many new passengers boarded the ship last week. But we are the only family they have nearby 2) They've left me a very small shopping list of basics - their fridge and freezer are completely empty 3) The next cruise - if they don't go because the government hasn't restricted travel they will lose thousands. I would rather lose the money myself - they are both in their 60's with pre existing conditions including an autoimmune disease.

Cheeseismylife · 10/03/2020 12:36

I was a secondary mfl teacher until mat leave. I would be shitting myself if I had to take a trip abroad right now.
There are so many issues.
If some kids get quarantined and a teacher has to stay with them, or teacher gets quarantined you won't have the correct ratio of staff for the remaining kids.
We had a similar issue with a d+v bug once on a trip and it was an utter nightmare.

emsy86 · 10/03/2020 12:37

Obviously its not helpful now but does anyone think in years to come this virus may actually save many lives by making the world much more aware of hand hygiene etc. it may not but silver linings and all that

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 10/03/2020 12:37

A virologist from Queens Belfast was just on bbc saying cv starts with sore throat, fever then cough.

I've been following this fairly closely and I thought sore throat meant less likely...although my medical training thinks that any challenge via the mouth of nose is going to end up causing an attempt by lymph nodes and tonsils to fight it?

I have a sore throat, bad head and feeling dodgy since yesterday and ds is off school as similar but feeling worse than me. I had been telling myself it was fine until that virologist said sore throat is relevant.

I do wish they would keep the advice consistent.
