Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Underlying conditions make coronavirus more severe, and they're surprisingly common

A wide array of people are at risk, including those with high blood pressure and diabetes. Here's how they can prepare

Cardiovascular
Asthma

Does everyone think it's ok To go on holiday in the uk?

It is a difficult one. Personally I think the cat is well and truly out of the bag and individuals travelling is at this point making very little difference. Obviously if EVERYONE stopped travelling, that would make a difference, but that won't happen until the Gvt say so. So at this point I would just go for it. But possibly don't go visit any hot spot hospitals...

Motorina · 10/03/2020 11:49

Yes @picklemewalnuts*
The figures were quoted on here with a source saying that of the 80% of mild cases 40% of these were moderate with pneumonia.*

I'm the one who highlighted this, and it's based on page 12 and 13 teh WHO report at www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf.

Interestingly, when I first read it, in the paragraph on p12 which outlines case definitions there was a clear statement that moderate meant pneumonia. That's been softened slightly to, "Approximately 80% of laboratory confirmed patients have had mild to moderate disease, which includes non-pneumonia and pneumonia cases". The footnote under diagram 5. on page 13 reads " Moderate cases have a mild form of pneumonia" and I'm drawing the conclusion that this forms half of mild/moderate cases from teh size of the bars in that diagram.

You could feel iller than you have in your life and still be in the mild/moderate category. Equally you could genuinely have just mild cold type symptoms. That mild/moderate category is a really broad one.

Sorry , my toddler tapped post.

...you be okay with your child going to New york on a school trip? She's due out in 2 weeks and I'm terrified of letting her go.

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 11:52

Green butterfly holidays in the UK right at this moment are probably ok, if you aren't visiting hot spots and you arent going to extremely busy places.
Problem is, nobody knows how the situation will be in a few weeks.
Because of my son who has a liver transplant, we are self isolating for the foreseeable. He ends up in hospital with a cold sometimes. I would feel ok 'at the moment' to go in a car to a log cabin in the middle of nowhere or camping in the woods or on a canal barge holiday.
As things progress, I would be staying at home personally.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 11:53

@FingonTheValiant I did say "Oi, don't lick that - you don't know who has touched it" and he looked very bashful

Foobydoo · 10/03/2020 11:54

@Fourducksate the school I am talking of is a primary. They chose to cancel with everyone losing their money.
In the case of St Peters they must have chosen to go. I suppose it is difficult if parents are cross at losing money.
I bet they dont all take self quarantine seriously. I hope they have proper checks.

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 11:54

I wouldnt want her to go forever
They have the most cases in the US.

HarrietOh · 10/03/2020 11:55

The case in Sunderland that is in hospital, the woman’s son has publicly spoken and they said they haven’t been abroad and haven’t been in contact with anyone who has tested positive.

KarenTookTheKids · 10/03/2020 11:55

Forever, I would consider it if the school still are keen to go, if all of you can easily self-isolate afterwards if needed, if she is sensible and has good hygiene, if you all have good health. She will be mixing with massive amounts of people presumably which surely increases her chances of picking it up compared with being at home. She also needs to understand that things are changing quickly and there's the possibility she could become unwell there or be quarantined and unable to get home for a while (eg if they did temp checks at the airport and hers or a classmate was elevated for any reason). Lots of unknowns which makes it a very scary prospect. I don't envy you the decision!

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 11:56

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to Italy, due to an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) and in line with various controls and restrictions imposed by the Italian authorities on 9 March. Is this the situation in which ABTA would grant a refund as per "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising against travel to my destination, can I get a refund?
In the event of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advising UK nationals not to travel to a given area, we expect all of our Members to offer clients who are due to travel imminently, eg. within approximately 48 hours, either an equivalent alternative holiday or a full refund of all money paid." because it doesn't say not to travel full stop.... just avoid all but essential travel

Delatron · 10/03/2020 11:56

Thanks @Motorina I couldn’t remember which poster had sourced the info on ‘mild’ cases. Which many are just not mild at all!

Delatron · 10/03/2020 11:58

With regards to a trip to New York. Just think about healthcare access over there. I lived there one summer and had to visit an emergency room for an eye issue. It was awful and expensive. And I had insurance.
