Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Denmark started social distancing last week with no events with 1000 plus in attendance and a request to be aware of spacing on public transport. I also read (on MN I think) that they have told their citizens in Italy to come home, created a separate section of the airport for them and then special buses to take them home for their quarantine.

“Many will have booked a trip or ticket to a concert they have been looking forward to. I hope everyone will step back and look at it from the community perspective. I appeal for unity and patience,”

I would be interested to see some analysis between type of gov't a country has (left, right, centrist, coalition etc) and when they start these measures.

Horehound · 10/03/2020 10:16

@picklemewalnuts actually he has a sore throat so it's unlikely to be CV.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 10/03/2020 10:18

I think the government is following the flu research from previous outbreaks (which I have linked to previously) and they and their advisors genuinely believe that social distancing is not scientifically effective right now.

Whether that is true or not is another matter, flu is different to cv so we can't be sure.

They also know that we can see how Italy and other countries are dealing with cv and as the numbers rise here there will be increasing public pressure to implement distancing measures.

They think this will coincide with the time when the measures will be maximally effective. People will be accepting and more compliant.

Then the hit to the economy will be seem to be justified, and they will emerge eventually from thiis without being accused of pulling the plug too soon.

They have purposefully floated the next measures but not taken action so that we all debate it for a few days whilst the laid back people have a chance to realise it's really happening here.

They are managing our expectations gradually-not enough beds, quote 'going to be a very, very bad few weeks..'

They clearly have advice from psychologists (i noticed yesterday one of the Chief advisors listed a lots of professions and petered out suddenly saying...'other experts'- ) and rightly so.

As I have said before, we are being manipulated, (or managed) but not for sinister reasons.

It just feels like that as we can tell when people are lying to us. Especially on this thread as we are well informed and would likely be compliant earlier. Although there is a good spread of views on here, which only demonstrates that people aren't ready for a lockdown, even if it was necessary.

I am no fan of the Tories but none of them are immune to this thing either, so for a change we are are all in the same boat. Private hospitals generally don't have proper ICU care.

Dk20 · 10/03/2020 10:20

Exactly @FourTeaFallOut

The problem is that I know what is really going on, i am keeping well informed, but how many people will believe what they are saying this morning Angry

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2020 10:24

Remember the 38 year old who sparked awareness that there was a major outbreak underway in Italy:

The 38-year-old Unilever worker named Mattia came to be known in Italy as Patient No 1.

At the San Matteo hospital in Pavia, there was a sigh of relief after Mattia began breathing on his own Monday with just a small amount of oxygen assistance.

He was moved out of intensive care to a sub-ICU unit and was speaking with doctors.

Reastie · 10/03/2020 10:24

@MangePasTesOnglesVilain YES, said far more eloquently than me but that makes perfect sense to me. We are being slowly managed to maximise compliancy. I just hope by taking steps so slowly initially it doesn’t backfire. We can all see how bad things are in Italy, and no one wants to be ill and in a situation like the Italian hospitals find themselves in.

Delatron · 10/03/2020 10:25

Apparently half of transmission cases are when people are pre-symptomatic. Professor on infectious disease on 5Live now.

I am completely confused because the govt keep saying the people that will have problems are the elderly, especially those with existing illnesses. What about young people & children with existing illnesses? I know they say children have a very mild reaction but have no children with asthma or compromised immune systems caught this virus? Furthermore why do they seem to be completely ignoring that it can be spread by those without symptoms?! Sorry if all this has already been said.

Random18 · 10/03/2020 10:39

BCF thanks for mentioning Hayfever. I will go and get some antihistamine.

Also will stock up for kids too. DS has got a habit of getting infections in spring / summer and I think a lot is linked to hayfever.

I was saying to my Mum, and husband last night, that I think they will begin a shutdown of schools just before/after Easter to coincide with the school holidays. For us that is 6-17 April.

Delatron · 10/03/2020 10:42

I think the government’s tactic is to avoid panic, let the inevitable happen and try to delay a bit next week by asking people with symptoms to self isolate. I don’t think they will follow other countries examples and close schools or ban large gatherings as they claim the evidence doesn’t support this.

They are annoying me by claiming it is ‘mild’
for most people when we know mild means pneumonia for a large percentage. And yes those with underlying conditions will be worse affected. We need a bit more leadership and action. What they are saying doesn’t really add up.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 10:42

*The Czech Republic is to close schools indefinitely and ban events hosting more than 100 people in new measures to contain the coronavirus, its prime minister said on Tuesday.

The country has reported 40 cases of coronavirus since detecting the first infections on 1 March. In most cases, the virus appeared in people coming from northern Italy, the worst-hit area of Europe.*

I don't get why the UK are not following suit given they have far far more cases?

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 10:46

@delatron, they don't seem to be publishing that info, where 50% of people with 'mild' had pneumonia. Where has it gone?

It was something like
5% intensive care, likely to die without a lot of intervention
15% very poorly
80% mild (but 50% of these have pneumonia).

Oakmaiden · 10/03/2020 10:48

A couple of thoughts.

I think those who compare our current statistics with Italy's and say "well, we have had a much slower rate so far, so it will continue to be slower" are missing the point that our first cases were imported. Whilst we managed to catch and isolate those few cases, then yes, that is right. But once community transmission gets going (as it seems to be in recent days) then there is no reason our build should be any different to anyone else's. Bascially, the first few cases were irrelevant. The first relevant case was seen on 28th Feb. If you start the build from there, it is a lot more similar to those in other countries.

Secondly, doing a bit of amateur statistics, draggin this out until the Easter holidays doesn't look possible to be. A 25% daily increase (which we have seen over the last week, give or take) puts us at over 84000 cases by then. That would be over 8000 people needing critical care. I can't imagine the Gvt leaving it that long.

I guess the question is - what number would put the NHS in a critical situation? And how similar is that to the number Joe Public would consider significant enough to curtail their civil liberties? 1000? That would be around the 14th/15th. 10,000? That could be 24th-25th.

I suspect someone in the Gvt is sitting in front of a spreadsheet fairly similar to (but more accurate and evidence based) than mine trying to work out that magic number.

I agree schools will be closed around Easter holidays maybe a week before and after too so one month of holidays. Hopefully the warmer weather will come too!

Oakmaiden · 10/03/2020 10:50

typos. sigh

MmeAlice · 10/03/2020 10:50

That was me choux. I'm following the developments in Danish on Dr nyheder. Are you in Denmark too?
They've just announced that there will be no more flights to and from the high risk zones as of midnight tonight and for 14 days. They are also bringing in measures to reduce crowding on public transport such as staggered start and finished times, working from home, using car sharing, bikes, putting on more services at peak times. They have also called up student and pensioned health workers in anticipation of extra staffing needs. www.dr.dk/nyheder

They really seem to be getting a handle on it now.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 10:51

@Oakmaiden Our holidays start COB 3rd April, and yes, it seems a VERY long time, given the increase in numbers per day. I envisage a closure in the next 10 days or so.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 10/03/2020 10:52

they claim the evidence doesn’t support this.

Anyone with half a brain can see this isn't true. China's strategy worked. WHO are praising Italy and the countries with the best contact tracing and control are doing better in terms of daily cases. The past evidence around flu, swine flu etc (not the same but comparable) shows school closures do make a difference. What 'evidence' are they using? Something cooked up to support a political agenda no doubt.

We're going to be that case study in the books of what happens when you just let a disease run rampant with a poor health service. The government is throwing doctors and nurses under a bus. And we don't need to be there are so many countries that had it before us and we can learn from them - BoJo seems determined not to.

It's really annoying me now they're not even cancelling events that aren't essential such as Crufts and Cheltenham.

What is the situation with private hospitals? Will they be kept for MPs or will they be forced to cancel all other appointments and take part in the coronavirus war effort? It better not be the former or you'll have rioting in the private hospitals I think.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 10:53

WRT to school closures, will it be the schools themselves who tell us - or the councils?
