Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I’ll repost this info graphic that demonstrates in simple terms the differing effects of initiating protective measures and not. Basically with the right timing they are hoping to not totally over whelm our already over stretched NHS. Protective measures (shutting schools etc) won’t stop people ultimately contracting the virus, it’s just buys time.

you would also need to consider the gown that priests are wearing.
in some countries 'just' the collar and suit, in others full robe.
collar & robes or suit jackets are usually not laundered daily

Reastie · 10/03/2020 09:54

Another thing coming from BJ conference yesterday was they want people to manage their symptoms at home and without being tested, which is expected as we don’t want people going to hospital unnecessarily, but lack of general testing means we’ll never have vaguely accurate figures.

As part of the research phase population sampling will be done to estimate how many people have had milder cases or do t catch it.

TheoneandObi · 10/03/2020 09:57

I think we will end up with a rough idea of transmission rates even without testing. I don't know how but epidemiologists with bigger brains than me will be modelling away.
And we do after all have pretty good ideas of how many people died or were infected in precious pandemics - Spanish Flu, plague. And some of those are way back in history. Let's hope an epidemiologist is looking at this threD bc it would be interesting to learn more.....

My zinc tablets arrived this morning so I'm pleased about that. Less pleased about the news that DSis (teacher) is ill with sore throat. headache, aching body and cough.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 10/03/2020 09:58

They will be able to figure out how many 'mild' cases there were at home eventually - once the first peak is over and people start going about their business. We'll either see another peak or not, and they'll probably be able to test people who had a 'mild cold' for antibodies and see if they have any.

One of the problems is we really don't know how contagious this is. We need to keep watching China.

Randomnessembraced · 10/03/2020 09:59

Here is some philosophy for everyone:

dailynous.com/2020/03/09/thinking-rationally-coronavirus-covid-19-guest-post-alex-broadbent/

We really cannot simplify how governments are responding to this virus. It is so vastly complicated.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 10:00

Morning all.

Sad to see another UK death overnight

Reastie · 10/03/2020 10:00

@Langbannedforsafeguardingkids yes, some v good points. I do think a lot of the measures at the moment are focused on reducing panic. I think we’re going to gradually be exposed to ideas of more severe measures and be softened to them before they are introduced to become more likely to be compliant eg the comment about staying home with a cold. They are preparing us for what’s next. I’m not saying this is the right tactic, just what I think psychologically they are doing. Of course it doesn’t explain all the PHE stuff being out of date. I have a friend who has cv symptoms which have now led to a chest infection. 111 won’t do testing because she hasn’t been to an affected country or knowingly been near an infected person. She’s not been told to self isolate.

Randomnessembraced · 10/03/2020 10:02

I have tried to talk to all the elderly people I know including grandparents to do my bit to make sure they understand the risks for them. Some are being very careful. However, I also got a few responses that surprised and depressed me. Quite a few said they would actually be quite ready to die and that they are quite fed up with life anyway. Not sure how to answer that!

Delatron · 10/03/2020 10:04

I get the plan to delay and I understand that people will only accept a couple of weeks of isolation so better to do this at the peak.

What I don’t understand is why ‘experts’ are
claiming there’s no community spread at the moment. When we have seen cases popping up that aren’t related to travel.-If we are expecting a peak of thousands in a few weeks and there’s a 2 week incubation period then NOW is the time that many people will be incubating and spreading the virus through the community no? Just because the official figures only show a couple of hundred, in a few weeks that will be very different. Due to community spread that is happening now while people don’t have symptoms?

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 10:06

Can you help me think please? You are the voices of reason!

DS2 has aches and pains, sore throat, temperature.
He is at a uni with a high proportion of students from China (though they tend to wear masks at all times, anyway).
We do not know of any cases at the uni, though there are cases in our city.

Should he inform 111?
Should he self isolate? He's too ill to go anywhere, but the tv is better in the lounge! 😬

The Czech Republic is to close schools indefinitely and ban events hosting more than 100 people in new measures to contain the coronavirus, its prime minister said on Tuesday.

The country has reported 40 cases of coronavirus since detecting the first infections on 1 March.

woodencoffeetable · 10/03/2020 10:08

pickle yes he needs to call 111

implantsandaDyson · 10/03/2020 10:08

I assumed the Pope was taking about hospital and prison chaplains, more than a parish priest popping in and out. Even so ill people confined to home will still need to be visited by those providing meals, healthcare etc I assume the priests would follow the same regime as those.

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 10:09

To be honest, apart from Dr John Campbell and this page, I try not to watch/read the news. I'd become obsessive.

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 10:09

Dk20 · 10/03/2020 10:11

@ofwarren
That latest update about Italy, wow Shock

I'm in Ireland and there was a piece on the news last night saying how if person a has coronavirus and they are in contact with person b, b cannot pass it on to person c unless person b gets it themselves - as in the germs will not live long enough to pass through person b to person c.

Unfortunately some have completely taken this up wrong and are now saying community transmission is not possible - that if a person does get coronavirus from another person in this country, then they cant pass it on to anyone else. "The man on the news even had diagrams" they are saying. So basically they believe that if person b catches coronavirus from person a, that this then cannot be passed onto anyone else Angry

magicrainbowbeans · 10/03/2020 10:13

pickle yes, though they may not take him seriously (test him) unless he has travelled, regardless of fellow student origins

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 10:15

So basically they believe that if person b catches coronavirus from person a, that this then cannot be passed onto anyone else

So they think 80,000 people who contracted coronavirus in China got it from the handful of people who caught it from patient zero. How sociable do they think people are?
