read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.

So, chances are most of us will at some point get cv at some point until there’s a vaccine. The govt accept this and they’re trying to keep the cases as steady as possible so as to keep the NHS afloat as well as it can. They have accepted there will likely be significant deaths likely. So it’s not in their interests to make everyone self quarantined at this point because if they do it’ll just come back into the country another way in the likely close future and we’ll be back to square one again and if we do we’ll all be desperate to get out in a few weeks and some will break quarantine and there’s a backlash. They must want (want is the wrong term you ykwim) a number of people to get it as part of their strategy so that they can then practice more strict measures with quarantine so as to stop the numbers growing out of control for what we can manage to cope with. Their aim is to allow an increase at this point and accept the collateral of deaths as part of the strategy that once they deem it sufficiently bad they take measures to then try to keep things as steady as possible over a prolonged time. They can’t have all workplaces closed because then many areas of the country would stop running. So they’re picking their moment to shut things down knowing that people won’t have tolerance to isolate indefinitely and in any case, if we did, it wouldn’t help because it would still come back into the country unless we all self isolate for a year or so until the vaccine was available, and how would that work because we wouldn’t have workers to get food to us etc. So the aim at present is to just try to get the numbers steady and not rise beyond what we’re capable of treating so as to reduce burden on nhs but accepting that despite hand washing etc, at some point many people can expect to get it. They just need to make sure they don’t all get it at the same time. That would explain why now they are doing so little.

Very clumsily written but is that right?

Crufts averages 160,000 visitors and 20,000 dogs from around 50 countries.

This took place in my home city, local airport, Birmingham.

They allowed those huge numbers so I am not surprised that Cheltenham 65,000 visitors (x4 days!) is also going ahead. Both events should have been cancelled.

An aveage Premier football match seems to average 60,000 atendees across multiple sites.

BertiesLanding · 10/03/2020 09:14

@Reastie - That's how I'm reading it too.

Cheeseismylife · 10/03/2020 09:15

Crufts should have been cancelled.

Fourducksate · 10/03/2020 09:17

@MrsMeg1 @neveradullmoment

I think this is the case, and this is where our problems are going to be. DS‘s school has no hand gel because they’ve run out and everybody borrows his, he stands before lunch doling it out at the end of the queue. He says half of them don’t bother to wash their hands, it’s a nightmare and no one suggests it either.

BertiesLanding · 10/03/2020 09:18

Okay.

Newish username - have been on here for years; and I've been doing a lot of reading and research.

I am taking the reports from doctors from Italy's hospitals very seriously. However, we need to add another layer on to the information they're giving us: the proportionately far larger numbers of people at home with the virus who won't need hospital.

In a hospital, on the front-lines, that is the sole perspective you get. (And I bet it is absolutely hellish.) But that isn't the only perspective. Hospitals are places we go to when we cannot treat ourselves. So we do have a tip of the iceberg situation here, if the global numbers of infected vs. hospitalised vs. recovered are taken into account.

In other words, hospitals are the worst-case scenarios. They will be an experience that will happen to many, but not most.

Cherrypi · 10/03/2020 09:21

I agree Reastie. It only slows the spread down if your isolating people when they've got it not before they get it.

Reastie · 10/03/2020 09:24

Ok glad it’s not just me reading it like that then.

Homkaismycat · 10/03/2020 09:27

Czech Rep has 40 cases of Coro.
From today ALL schools in the country are shut.
Any public gathering over 100 people cancelled too.

Talking about Cheltenham festival on R4 and what a fascinating case study it is! FFS.

Let's see what happens if large social gatherings are allowed to continue at the start of a local epidemic in a pandemic. We have known the answer to that one since the Spanish flu.*

I thought exactly the same. Case study Shock

Although the other part of me thinks people know the risks and it's up to them. However I think they are only considering themselves and not the risk of spreading it to others.

anonacfr · 10/03/2020 09:29

Our school has just informed us that they are still going ahead with trips planned to Paris and Barcelona this Easter 'unless they hear otherwise from the Government'...
In other words, no refunds if you decide to withdraw your child. Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 09:30

People can still withdraw their child if they’re worried though.

People seem to expect bottomless pits of money with all this.

Orangeblossom78 · 10/03/2020 09:32

Dr Harries said the vast majority of those diagnosed with coronavirus in Britain are "pretty well" but that they may "feel rough for a few days".

Sounds positive doesn't it

NerrSnerr · 10/03/2020 09:33

Although the other part of me thinks people know the risks and it's up to them. However I think they are only considering themselves and not the risk of spreading it to others.

This is the issue. I am local and the whole of the town centre is rammed all week. Luckily I'm about 3 miles away from the town centre and can avoid but shop, bar, hotel, bus drivers etc can't. I'm sure some of these workers have children at my children's school etc.

There'll be a spike around here in the coming weeks I'm sure.

WaterSheep · 10/03/2020 09:36

Pope Francis has said “Let us pray to the Lord also for our priests, that they may have the courage to go out and visit the sick... and to accompany the medical staff and volunteers in the work they do.”

Hmm
BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 10/03/2020 09:37

Another Italian doctor and excellent hospital on the frontline. The govt listens to him.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 09:38

I was Hmm at that too WaterSheep and some other words.

ChipotleBlessing · 10/03/2020 09:38

I think that’s pretty important actually. People will want priests there if they’re dying and they tend to be older.

Cheeseismylife · 10/03/2020 09:39

I'm going to get some vit d supplements in.
Also vitamin c.

Does anyone know what level you need to supplement at to fight the virus?
For Adults and kids?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 09:42

vitamins may help maintain a good immune system, if you think your diet doesn't cover it all
That might slightly reduce the chances of getting it

However, there is no vitamin level that would be really relevant in fighting CV-19

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 09:46

If over the counter meds, vitamins, minerals etc made the slightest difference,

the WHO and all governments would be publicising this like mad,
because it would be a measure that causes zero harm to the economy or daily life

WaterSheep · 10/03/2020 09:47

I think that’s pretty important actually. People will want priests there if they’re dying and they tend to be older.

I appreciate sick people may want to see priests. However given the situation, where even weddings and funerals are prohibited, it's very irresponsible to advocate visiting others. Also using words like courageous doesn't sit right with me, there's nothing courageous about potentially spreading the virus.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 10/03/2020 09:51

Reastie I hope your summary is what's going on but the government has said and done some very inexplicable things if they're listening to scientists.
1 - It wasn't that long ago that Boris was actually advocating shaking hands, thank goodness that's been stopped
2 - saying that they're not going to play football matches behind closed doors etc because people 'will just go to the pub' which doesn't sound like a government in control. You could quite easily say 'we've cancelled this match because of the coronavirus - please don't go to the pub or this will have been pointless and the virus will spread'. Public health messages do work (drink driving, folic acid) - it's like they think people can't understand basic facts. Personally if an event I'd been going to was cancelled for coronavirus I wouldn't then go to the pub. This seems massively disingenuous
3 - The PHE advice seems to be quite out of date e.g. they are constantly telling people it's not infectious before symptoms appear. This is clearly extremely unlikely to be true so they're either lying to 'avoid panic' (which in me causes more panic because I feel they're not in control) or not taking the best advice from scientists. www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30567-5/fulltext#sec1
4- They're not plucking the low hanging fruit to reduce transmission: closing cinemas and theatres and playing sports matches behind closed doors, Crufts, Cheltenham. Allowing those who can to keep kids off school now. Even if non-infected reduce going to events that WILL reduce spread because if there are fewer people and more space in between people there will be less spread.
5- The PHE advice still focusses very much on foreign travel when we have more cases here now than the countries they're talking about had when the advice came in. And we have known community transmission now so it's getting out of date fast.

I really, really wish I trusted the government was listening to scientists and putting lives first but I'm not sure they are. I hope they are, but a few things they've done make me dubious. It could be just incompetence but that doesn't make me feel any better.
