Bored of the madness

So now I can't buy toilet paper or nappies in my local store and can't book a doctors appointment...!

I get the "fear of the unknown" but seriously!?

It's no worse than flu! Flu kills too and (most) people don't panic buy every winter. COVID only seems to be affecting people with underlying health issues. The flu vaccine doesn't always work as influenza changes all the time. I don't get it.

I'm just so bored of all the drama.

Unless I'm missing some vital information that hasn't been shared publicly?????

AuntieMarys · 09/03/2020 13:43

Our local rag has just printed that all over 60s should stay indoors. Fuck off.

Bestnewshoes · 09/03/2020 13:46

Bored WITH not of, aren't you bored with these viruses threads saying exactly the same thing?

2dogsand1baby · 09/03/2020 13:46

Idiots. The media is largely to blame for all the hype.

OP posts:
oneteen · 09/03/2020 13:46

So it's more important that you can buy toilet rolls and nappies and it doesn't matter about the fact that people who have health problems are at risk

COVID only seems to be affecting people with underlying health issues

Selfish attitude!

Seventyone72seventy3 · 09/03/2020 13:47

It's no worse than flu!
It is a lot worse.

Unless I'm missing some vital information that hasn't been shared publicly?????
You seem to have missed just about everything.

2dogsand1baby · 09/03/2020 13:48

@oneteen Not intended to come across as selfish at all, my apologies. I meant only a small proportion should be being extra careful in the same way they would every winter. Not every man and his dog.

@Seventyone72seventy3 😂🤦‍♀️

vera99 · 09/03/2020 13:49

There is no doubt in my mind that it is a serious threat but has been amplified many times by the madness of internet-enabled crowds. The health facilities being overwhelmed by folk who should not panic and sweat it out at home are part of the problem.

Thank you, @vera99. A useful article.

Not sure why you find my answer funny. I can assure you it is no joke. A friend of mine's son is in hospital with peritonitis and the hospital is pushed to its limits. You better hope that nobody in your family needs medical treatment for anything soon.

TabbyMumz · 09/03/2020 13:51

"Our local rag has just printed that all over 60s should stay indoors. Fuck off."

But that's against Government advice. Noone has said over 60s should stay indoors.

2dogsand1baby · 09/03/2020 13:55

@Seventyone72seventy3 "A friend of mine's son is in hospital with peritonitis and the hospital is pushed to its limits. You better hope that nobody in your family needs medical treatment for anything soon."

I really hope they're ok. But this has nothing to do with what I was posting about. Surely anyone poorly is at risk of flu, MRSA, pneumonia, sepsis etc etc, but we don't go into a meltdown as a country every time someone becomes ill with one of these.

I think you missed my original point, but I really hope your son's friend is ok.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 09/03/2020 13:56

If it was normal flu they wouldnt be shutting down cities or closing schools across the globe.
The stock markets wouldnt be in turmoil.
Right now its not to bad here, but it has the potential to change very quickly, for context italy had 55 deaths two weeks ago now nearly 300. This is bigger than other scares of the past due to its contagious rate. Yes i hope its over the top and not needed but if it goes like italy i pray that people are able to understand why the measures coming in is for EVERYONES benefit not just those at high risk.

2dogsand1baby · 09/03/2020 13:59

@Bestnewshoes The Oxford Dictionary now considers "bored of" to be standard English too.

but we don't go into a meltdown as a country every time someone becomes ill with one of these.

I don't think you have understood the problem. The problem is that a relatively high proportion of people who contract the virus will need hospitalization - often in a high-dependency ward. This is obviously bad for them but it is bad for anyone who needs/will need medical for treatment over the next few weeks or months for any reason. There just won't be the beds/staff to cope. This is why people are being urged to isolate themselves. It is true that lots of people will not contract the virus without serious problems but enough people will need hospitalization to bring the health service to its knees.

Sacredcauses · 09/03/2020 14:05

I think that the problem with this virus is;
1 Its easy to be infected with it
2 There is no vaccine for perhaps 12 mths
3 It can, and does kill
The hype isn't helping, but the Government would be negligent not to plan for a pandemic.
Personally, I'm off to Spain next week provided the ferries are still running.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 09/03/2020 14:14

whilst I get that all the hype is not helping and there is a lot of madness (tiolet roll stockpiling etc) it is not true that it is no worse than flu. The mortality rate for flu is 0.1%. The current estimate of mortality rate for COVID19 is between 2.5 and 4% - significantly more than flu. Whilst many people may only have mild symptoms it has the potential to be fatal for a signifcant number of people - much more so than flu. Therefor it does need to be taken seriously. Additionally given the state of the NHS there is no way it will cope with the massive numbers of very unwell people it will be dealing with. This will then have knock on effects for those people with other illnesses, death rates from non COVID illnesses will almost certainly increase too. And that is before you start considering all the business and financial imlications of many many people being ill and off work at the same time.

bellinisurge · 09/03/2020 14:33

There is immunity in the population to flu. There are also vaccines. This year's one worked because I had it and took care of dd who had flu in November and didn't catch it off her. I have MS. Getting or not getting bugs matters to me.
Not aware of a vaccine for this one or any immunity in the population.
Otherwise it's all fiiiiiiine.

peachgreen · 09/03/2020 14:35

It is significantly worse than flu.
It isn't only affecting people with underlying health conditions.

That's the vital information you've missed.

Mintjulia · 09/03/2020 14:37

Op, I got to the point over the weekend, I just want to catch the bloody thing now, get it out of the way and move on. I’m fit and healthy, people like me need to catch it to build herd immunity to protect the weaker ones.

All this hype is like watching a car crash in slow motion. Really annoying.

BonnesVacances · 09/03/2020 14:40

Every time an OP starts a thread like this, it just shows their ignorance. I'm bored of that, if that helps?

Humina · 09/03/2020 14:41

Have you considered the effects on the NHS if all of sudden, thousands of people require specialist care. It barely copes at this time of year anyway. So yes, you might not get it, but you could get something else or have an accident and find yourself in a bit of a disaster area.
And yes, it is worse than flu.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 09/03/2020 14:44

Its actually not fear of the unknown, it’s fear of the known. Every last shred of information that we know about this virus is out there to read for yourself in the way of reports, graphs and data. Testimonies from the front lines from doctors. Anyone that’s read that information rather than listen to the “it’s not flu” brigade has sat up and taken notice.
So now, just because you didn’t listen to the warnings coming out of Asia and Italy, you can’t buy what you need and NOW you get upset?

This is what will happen to the head in the sand people over the coming weeks. Exactly this.

todayisnottuesday · 09/03/2020 14:44

Spot on.

“Its just flu” brigade even*
