Some workplaces have cases and are taking sensible measures as highlighted a few posts ago.

Yet we expect school staff and children to carry on business as usual.

RazzleDazzle26 · 09/03/2020 19:38

@Pixxie7 my dd is at the adjoining school which shares facilities such as the canteen. Can’t believe there’s been no communication to our school and no deep clean!

Confuddledtown · 09/03/2020 19:41

2 schools in Co. Armagh (a primary and secondary on the same site) closed for deep clean following positive results of cv

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 19:41

This was from 4 March, re Italy:

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/italy-coronavirus-deaths-infections-093740345.html

Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London’s faculty of medicine, said he estimates there are “at least” 50,000 to 100,000 cases of the virus in the country

...."for every person who dies we think there might be 100, maybe even 200 people infected."

Pixxie7 · 09/03/2020 19:42

@RazzleDazzle28 it was in the evening echo apparently the girls school have sent out contingency plans to parents in case.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/03/2020 19:43

@Glittercandle I bought a bottle and I have had a dispatch note today.

Confuddledtown · 09/03/2020 19:44

*a positive result (singular).

Schools now named as Newtownhamilton

Lynatic · 09/03/2020 19:48

People saying that the UK is rights respecting, not confident in government handling of this or freedom of information I have kept my dc at home and received a backlash from authorities, advising me on risk and implying child neglect. I am not confident that withdrawal from school will go unchallenged. The worst case outcome is more than a fine.

peachgreen · 09/03/2020 19:49

DH was at a careers fair with kids from Newtownhamilton last week. He now has a dry cough (though no fever). I am petrified.

peachgreen · 09/03/2020 19:50

I don't even know what to do now. Should we isolate? He doesn't feel unwell and he has had a sinus infection for weeks so it could be related. But the dry cough is new.

SummerSazz · 09/03/2020 19:51

Do we know anything about whether this virus gets circulated via air con? I don't think I've seen anything other than some comments as to this may have been a transmission route on cruise ships. I'm still going to work but have space around my desk and am taking precautions so ok with It but if I knew it could pass airline air con systems I would be wfh by now I think.

@Ledkr - I too am pissed off re Cheltenham going ahead. DH and I have tickets for tomorrow but we aren't going as it's not worth the risk IMO. But good to know we might have a cluster created on our doorstep 🤨

HerstoryInTheMaking · 09/03/2020 19:51

Just an update on the coronavirus death in Carshalton, South London. Sutton London borough was on zero cases in the cases count yesterday.

This means that patient was diagnosed close to time of death. Since Covid-19 takes a long time for symptoms this patient has been in that hospital for a while undiagnosed. The potential for spread within St Helier is high. Plus this is an old hospital with big wards.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 19:51

Lyanatic I hope the govt allows parents to decide in this crisis, without penalty

Up to 5 dead now?

So this self-quarantine will be our version of mass quarantine and not bothering to test people do we think?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 09/03/2020 19:56

But they have put people before the economy with regard to control of the virus. The economic impact has been enormous, but tough measures continue.

Nonsense. They had no choice, so by containing Wuhan they salvaged what they could in the other provinces.

If they'd really put lives first then they would have closed all borders immediately. They didn't.

And they didn't learn their lesson from SARS.

halcyondays · 09/03/2020 19:56

I wondered if the pupil at Newtownhamilton had already been off school? If not wouldn’t some other pupils and teachers by close contacts and have to self isolate. Hope your dh is ok, peachgreen.

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 19:56

Parents should be allowed to make that judgement call for themselves without penalty.

Delatron · 09/03/2020 19:57

DH works for a consultancy firm. All international travel has been stopped. They’ve been encouraged to work from home and his client (large international company) have told everyone to work from home. Good measures from some companies taking this seriously.

DonkeyKong2019 · 09/03/2020 19:57

It appears BCP council are advising this policy to early years settings as mine has a new illness policy being issued tomorrow and my ds most likely will now be off long term with a chronic respiratory problem until the guidelines are removed

SummerSazz · 09/03/2020 19:58

Just come across this in a local newspaper - a drive through testing unit. You have to be referred by 111 but at least there seems to be some increase in capacity with results after 72 hours

Eeyoresstickhouse · 09/03/2020 20:02

@DonkeyKong2019 omg really? This could massively affect us. Do you have a link?

crispycracker · 09/03/2020 20:02

From Guardian:

While coronavirus deaths increase day after day in Italy, good news has emerged from the hospital in Pavia where Mattia, the Italian patient 1, has been treated since 21 February, is breathing autonomously and has been discharged from intensive care.

A medical taskforce worked for weeks, day and night, to keep him alive. The man, 38, was the first Italian patient infected with the virus. To many, his recovery has inspired optimism that the battle against Covid-19 can be won.

....
So after 14+ days a 38 year old marathon runner is finally out of ICU and breathing independently.

And yet people just carry on saying its no worse than flu

BunsyGirl · 09/03/2020 20:03

@FourTeaFallOut

I presume they mean that where they used non-invasive ventilation rather than invasive ventilation, more patients died. Non-invasive ventilation works via a tight fitting mask rather than an incubation tube. My DM had it when she was ill with lung cancer. It didn’t work because the wonderful NHS give her a mask that didn’t fit properly and she died the same day.

seasmize · 09/03/2020 20:04

500+ new cases in Spain today, and all schools, institutes and universities closed in Madrid.

Floooy174 · 09/03/2020 20:05

The average age of the deceased in Italy is 81. Whilst It’s sad, it is not really killing many young people. I think governments need to focus their advice to the over 70’s and explain what they need to do to keep themselves as safe as possible.
