My grandsons schools headteacher and some of the other teachers have had to self isolate after direct contact. However school is still open not even closed for deep cleaning. Does make you wonder.

BertiesLanding · 09/03/2020 19:23

Do people think that we will extend the Easter holidays or is the working assumption that two weeks alone would be enough to have an effect?

@FourTeaFallOut - There's a possibility that life will change quite dramatically for a few months at least.

Can I ask a question- which is why does Whitty say that stopping air travel doesn't work? He gave the example of stopping travel from China to Italy as an example.

Why would stopping air travel not work? Is it because we already have community transmission anyway now? Or is it because people don't self-isolate properly (which could be solvable by putting them in quarantine) and so it doesn't have the desired effect that way.

It's just it doesn't make sense to me- or at least, not stopping air travel from Italy/Chinese affected areas doesn't. If you genuinely stopped or contained people fully then their risk of infecting others must be almost nothing, no?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 19:25

If kids have to be kept home for 7 days with each cold, then the govt might as well go whole hog

  • let parents choose to keep kids home anyway until the crisis is over

Looks like it could come to the same thing wrt attendance,
but depends on whether they want to waste resources on harassing parents

WingingItSince1973 · 09/03/2020 19:25

@middleager The lad who goes to that school lives in my town and has associated with kids from the high school across the road to me. My mum also works at that school. It's getting too close for comfort now. Especially as he had passed the 14 days when he fell poorly. Poor lad. I hope it will be mild for him. They have advised the kids in our school to self isolate for 14 days!

Lynatic · 09/03/2020 19:25

@ShanghaiDiva has there been free information in China or is it that only old and weak people get sick ?

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 19:26

Boris said ££ measures would be announced on Wednesday in the budget.

What a sloppy mess.
People won't self isolate with a cold. Hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, nail techs, mechanics, etc.

Very few will close shop literally, for a cold.
In schools heads won't insist slightly unwell teaches go home and esp not those in year 6 or gcse age!

Will schools close if covid is found?
Who will test for it now?
Student comes in with slight temp and sore head throat.. Infect us all and stop coming in when they are unwell, but recover and they never need the doctor?

MmeAlice · 09/03/2020 19:27

So Denmark has jumped again.
33 yesterday
59 this morning
90 this evening.

Not sure what the testing regime is.

Saucery · 09/03/2020 19:27

People who only receive SSP or who have precarious employment with few rights are simply not going to risk taking 7 days off for a slight cold, cough or temperature. And no one is going to insist they do, in many cases. That’s before you factor in their dc maybe needing 7 days off school too.
Skiver’s Charter for people whose sick pay kicks in on the first day of illness though Hmm.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 19:27

The Department of Health has confirmed three more people have tested positive for covid-19 in Ireland

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 19:30

so they may never report their illness unless it becomes a blue-light critical case

I suspect thats whats behind SOME of the extra buying of paracetamol and ibuprofen, it helps with slight fevers so people may hide it for a bit longer and/or not report it and go to work.

Whe the option is low or no SSP or UC This could be the result.

middleager · 09/03/2020 19:31

Lambrini My son goes to a different school in a neigbouring LA. Skiing in North Italy at half term.

It is worrying because after 14 days of all clear, it would be assumed all was OK with returning students.
It reminds us that actually people may not display symptoms until after 14 days.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 19:31

What a sloppy mess.People won't self isolate with a cold. Hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, nail techs, mechanics, etc.

Kids will and those with a nasty cold who get sick pay will.

If teachers do, schools will close. Heads aren’t going to tell their staff to disobey government policy.

santoslhalperrr · 09/03/2020 19:32

Also, finally a workplace (mine), has issued an appropriate and measured response. Hubby's work not so much.

Hubby's work has a confirmed coronavirus case - says to everyone, we're cleaning the area, and they're all expected to come in.

My work: Someone has a suspected case, have closed the floor for a week to deep clean it and will deep clean all common areas daily. No one is expected to come in on any floor and can work from home for a period of three weeks and then they'll reassess the situation. If you want to go in, you don't have to ride the tube, work will pay for parking, or Ubers.

Seems pretty fair and reasonable! Hubby's work on the other hand...

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 19:32

It is worrying because after 14 days of all clear, it would be assumed all was OK with returning students. It reminds us that actually people may not display symptoms until after 14 days.

So, what’s the reasoning behind 7 day self-isolation with a temperature or RI then?!

ShanghaiDiva · 09/03/2020 19:32

@Lynatic
We have information on the number of cases per city, province but I don’t have any age breakdown. I can only comment on my province : approx 700 cases, 70 million people and no deaths.

confusedandtired99 · 09/03/2020 19:33

I’m a sole trader... if I can’t work and clients can’t pay for my service then my business is going to be in a very sticky situation. I’ve not been open a year yet so I haven’t built any reasonable savings either. I’ve also heard that payment protection insurers for illness will most likely refuse to pay out for the virus

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 19:33

I take ibuprofen lysine for period pain. (paracetamol doesnt touch the sides anymore) but there has been a run on these too.

Tonkerbea · 09/03/2020 19:34

@santoslhalperrr
Same at my husbands place of work. It's just ridiculous. Not even encouraging wfh for those who can

Saucery · 09/03/2020 19:35

So, what’s the reasoning behind 7 day self-isolation with a temperature or RI then?!

The cynic in me says it is so we can be blamed for rocketing rates of transmission. “Oh well, we told the public what to do but they didn’t do it properly”

PotholeParadise · 09/03/2020 19:36

Also, what are we hoping to achieve with a 7 day isolation for people with colds? Firstly Covid symptoms are different to colds, secondly recent papers show cases she’d virus from 8-37 days!

Time.

At present, if we have community transmission, it will be kept going around the community by people who think they 'just' have a cold, and who feel obliged to man/woman up with paracetamol. By the time they become certain it's more than a cold, they will have spread it to many more people.

If we encourage people to stay at home for seven days, they will either be better at the end of that, or they will not. If they're not, we thank our lucky stars they weren't coughing over everyone over the previous seven days.

Oh, and we'll cut the admissions for complications of colds.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/03/2020 19:36

From offwarren's link

Included in the risk factors is
the prolonged use of non-invasive ventilation were important factors in the deaths of these patients

Do they mean oxygen therapy, so particularly patients with COPD?

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 19:36

Just seen nail techs in Rome on Ch 4 news. You can still get your nails done but they take your temp on the way in.

does anyone elses temp go up when on their period?
