DH did raise the key meter Vs self isolation issue with his work - apparently it has been under discussion at their planning meetings so it is on the radar.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 18:39

GPwife did

I think it's because the government said that they assume that 100000 will die if coronavirus cannot be contained by that you should include 17000 flu deaths in that figure.

(Even though we have had a year with low flu deaths and that we have already past the peak of the flu season which is typically the end of Jan/ Feb time)

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 18:41

Thinking of all suffering in whatever ways Flowers especially as its escalating.

I had heard with the Leicestershire cases that going into today there were two at Loughborough uni.

PotholeParadise · 09/03/2020 18:41

I think the move towards people isolating themselves for presumed colds for 7 days could be a very positive step.

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 18:41

@Kuponut Thank You Thanks

WouldShouldCould · 09/03/2020 18:43

@Bogoffrain yes that would be fine.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 18:43

The last age breakdown I saw of the deaths in Italy was that noone under 50 has died

Dusty01 · 09/03/2020 18:45

That's comforting. I'm 51.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 18:45

Did they say how or if they were going to enforce the 7 day isolation for cold and flu symptoms?.

magicrainbowbeans · 09/03/2020 18:46

glitter same and no dispatch notice

BramblyHedge · 09/03/2020 18:46

My son has chronic rhinitis and permanently looks like he has a cold. He already gets enough stick at school from the boys and teachers. I don't think he is at heightened risk (could be wrong - if anyone know please tell me...) but wonder if it will be assumed that he should be self isolating if we get to that stage.

WouldShouldCould · 09/03/2020 18:47

@Glittercandle same

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 18:48

I would love to know exactly what they are waiting for? What have they extrapolated from the evidence so far that has made them decide 10-14 days from now is the time to begin their plan?

Have they estimated that we’ll have 3000 cases by then? 50 deaths?

I wonder what their model is.

Lynatic · 09/03/2020 18:48

I can see even with the Italian that it doesn't go into detail about patients

Delatron · 09/03/2020 18:48

The 7 day isolation for cold symptoms is an interesting policy. Are we all to judge ourselves? A minor cold? Or a fever? How will it be enforced? I’m guessing it won’t and will therefore be voluntary?

DonkeyKong2019 · 09/03/2020 18:50

That isolation will mean my 3 year old is never in

SisterAgatha · 09/03/2020 18:50

I have a mild cold. Very mild. No sore throat. No reason to worry at all. Am I to stay home?

middleager · 09/03/2020 18:50

Currently, schools are advised to keep open, even if they have a case, which is exactly what this school in Rugby has done, even though there are a number of cases emerging in Warwickhire today including Warwick Uni.

This is a worrying case as the student went skiing in North Italy at the start of half term.(like my son). Returned to UK (no symptoms - like my son) and then self isolated for 14 days (unlike my son after we were advised to send him in).
After 2 weeks the boy has tested positive. Very worrying given that some at my son's school did return with coughs and were tested. Seems we are not out of the woods.

Business & Economic Impact

For anyone interested in the wider economic impact McKinsey have published a briefing note with their estimates of impact on GDP by region.

It shows best case (quick recovery like China) versus worst case (global pandemic, no quick recovery like China).

The worst case is pretty horrifying.

Full briefing note here: www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/risk/our-insights/covid-19-implications-for-business?cid=other-eml-alt-mip-mck&hlkid=0c9161c2e2ed44079b452c62336fdc0c&hctky=10059919&hdpid=5d2d919f-402a-4cc1-bb7f-cd772a29f8d0

I'm so angry that the Cheltenham festival is going ahead.
Quarter of a million people from all over will descend on our town tomorrow till Friday bringinf their germs with them to infect staff and local people.
It's bloody ludicrous.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 09/03/2020 18:51

Dusty I feel your pain. Apparently the ages in ICU range from 46-83. I just turned 46......... although also isn't patient zero in Italy seriously ill and IIRC is about 38 and a marathon runner so super fit? (I do hope he recovers fully as his wife is pregnant....)

I do think with a novel virus like this all bets are off. Some super fit young people will die too. Some Octogenarians will survive.

I get the human instinct to try and imagine it's not going to happen to you but it is very distasteful and - I'm sorry - also very, very, very stupid because it gives people a false sense of security and stops them doing sensible things like social distancing.

I can't believe it when I see people still posting on facebook about going to the cinema and theatre. It just seems an insane thing to do - so very not essential (and yes, I think the gov't should step in to economically help theatres / actors affected and maybe pay them to do tv programmes instead - it is likely that there will be more movie downloads if people stop going to cinema so some offset economic activity).

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 18:53

Dusty01 The average age of death was 81 and was reportedly a large majority male, more so than in China
