Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, is speaking now.He says the government wants to push the peak of the outbreak into the summer.

This sounds to me like it’s all about getting GCSE/A levels over and done with?

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 17:46

@hankyspanky Thanks Thanks

I had a suspicion that they would use this as a lever to try and get more people on to smart meters Not a good look

No wonder its a DM and not a public tweet.

AvocadoOwl · 09/03/2020 17:47

I found the press conference reassuring and thought some of their rationale made a lot of sense. I realise that's an unfashionable opinion though!

I sort of get the logic re large events. I think the London Marathon won't go ahead for different reasons: it requires a large number of medical staff present throughout the course in order for it to run safely. Paramedics, course doctors, lots of St Johns Ambulance etc). I don't think we are going to have the hands spare in late April.

Bogoffrain · 09/03/2020 17:48

I asked on another thread but no answer so thought I’d ask you knowledgeable lot, is 70% running alcohol ok as a hand sanitiser when out and about? Thank you

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 17:48

Fedup, I highly doubt that is the priority. Much more likely be because there is less pressure on the NHS then, when out of 'flu season'

FourTeaFallOut · 09/03/2020 17:48

In England alone over seventy people have died from the flu just this year already , and every year nearly 17 000 people die from flu in England.

Really, so we get through the peak of the flu season with only 70 deaths but now we are expecting 16930 to follow? Does that sound right to you?

tud41 · 09/03/2020 17:49

@MrsStrangerThing

www.gov.uk/government/statistics/annual-flu-reports

please click on the first reports and go to page 51, the average is 17000 in the last 5 years

Cheltenham, whilst my feeling is as a mass gathering should be cancelled, the economic impact of cancelling it will be huge. And I mean huge. Not just to the organisers, but hotels, bars, restaurants, cafes, B&B’s

Absolutely i get it, but to cancel means a huge loss and at the moment, I think the Government will struggle to recommend that.

It may well have been a different story 14 days from now

BertiesLanding · 09/03/2020 17:50

@fedup21 - The far more likely reason is because seasonal flu and other infections decrease considerably as it gets warmer, so the NHS will be in a better position to cope with COVID19 over the summer months.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/03/2020 17:51

We have some really shitty flu years that really skew the average and on those years the NHS falls to its knees, in none of those years have we seen anything like the expected number of death that we assume of 100000, let alone the amount of hospital admissions that will accompany that.

Ciwirocks · 09/03/2020 17:51

I agree with staying at home with mild illness but schools and workplaces will need to be more lenient with attendance and sickness. Hopefully once it is government advice they will be, I don’t know why we need to wait another week or 10 days for it though!

tud41 · 09/03/2020 17:51

@Langbannedforsafeguardingkids

Just for context do you know how many deaths in the long term we could have if the economy collapsed which is what would most likely happen if we start to shut everything down!

Fourducksate · 09/03/2020 17:51

Scary conversation today, but really highlights the need for more precise information.

I had lunch with a colleague today, she told me how at mass on Sunday, they were told not to shake hands as a sign of peace. However they all shared the communion goblet, because it was silver and the priest said the virus couldn’t survive on silver.

You couldn’t make it up!

I however sat in several lectures with nursing students, all coughing and sneezing, saying it was only like the flu. I haven’t the option not to go in, if I don’t, I don’t get paid.

There were also rumours (they maybe just that) of a student who has just tested positive, but hasn’t told the Uni. and whilst self isolating PHE haven’t to their knowledge told uni yet either, or if they have, there’s been no action.

I just hope that isn’t true.

I tend to think of this situation like the Australian bushfires.
Every year Australia knows they will have fires, but they don't know where. They enforce restrictions on people, like no open fires, don't drop ciggie butts, and fuel reduction. That's the washing hands part. But they don't go around bombing the bush with water, as that wouldn't achieve much.
But, when an outbreak starts, they attack it. Cut it off and bomb it with water. Hopefully this will make it go out, or at least give them time to evacuate people. This is delay I guess. Closing schools etc.
It's an appropriate response at an appropriate time. Too early and it's just wasteful.
I guess the complaint we have for the government is fuel reduction, which I guess is cancelling sporting events. Ironically, this was the issue with the recent Australian bushfires. Get it wrong and you can be overwhelmed.
Have we reduced enough fuel? I have my doubts.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 17:53

I don’t know why we need to wait another week or 10 days for it though!

I don’t get that either?

@BertiesLanding that makes sense, thanks.

BertiesLanding · 09/03/2020 17:54

@Newjez - I think that's a fairly accurate analogy.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 09/03/2020 17:55

Don't know what that priest was doing fourducks in our diocese priests have explicitly been told no communion wine at all.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 17:55

The economy will not collapse. That is scaremongering.

Cuddling57 · 09/03/2020 17:56

Does anyone else get the impression (not sure if they actually said it) that they need a lot of people to actually catch it now, albeit in a slow timely manner?

Rocketmam · 09/03/2020 17:56

Dh just back from his emergency appointment with the asthma nurse. As he went in the receptionist was panicking and shouted at him not to use the touchpad, which she ran over to wipe down.

He took himself to the quiet side of the waiting room when a bloke with a mask came out of the side room, usually used for bf mums, and started coughing everywhere. Apparently one of the doctors was telling this guy to get back in the room as DH went in for his appointment.

Asthma nurse gave him some more steroids and told him to just take ten blasts on the blue one as it is the same as being on a ventilator. And that he should avoid the small local hospital if possible because they have their first case in intensive care there.

Starting to feel a bit more real now Shock

Random ''all that will happen is folks will take their out for an early holiday' '

Confused

Maybe some will.

But many many people will not, probably the dp of dc who have any additional health conditions even if not severe.

Our very aged priest said, with feeling, I hope you've all washed Your hands as he explained his protocol which included using hand sanitiser before giving out communion. I feel like the church is acting more responsibly than the Government at the mo...
