Boris Johnson says it is "obvious to everyone" that the #coronavirus outbreak will become "much more significant" than it currently is - but that containing it remains a priority.

The PM was responding to a question from Sky's @BethRigby.

@Stircrazyschoolmum This is exactly it. close all schools now and in a few weeks when parents are not working or earning because of it they will soon start to demand they re-open at the worst possible time.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 17:36

The latest is:

"People who show "even minor" signs of respiratory tract infections or a fever will soon be told to self-isolate in an effort to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.
The UK government's chief medical adviser said the change in advice could happen within the next 10 to 14 days."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51807781

What do you think of this?

roundbox · 09/03/2020 17:37

Couldn't believe my ears when Vallance said mass gatherings don't make much of a difference to spread of infection. I'm not able to rewind to confirm I heard that correctly.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 17:37

ITALY— #coronavirus: 463 deaths and 9172 total cases.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 09/03/2020 17:37

So cutting edge epidemiology advises that gatherings of people do not contribute to spread significantly, whereas isolating symptomatic individuals does?

Is that what they were saying?

It does indeed sound counterintuitive.

If so can anyone find links to the articles and modelling studies? Genuine question.

I would try but I'm going out as normal on gov advice.

eMmAsuper8 · 09/03/2020 17:37

Had an email saying a child has been sent home to self isolate who had been travelling in half term. His symptoms only include a cold so we'll see. Makes sense for them to be cautious but his siblings are supposed to be in school. Doesn't make sense!

Piggywaspushed · 09/03/2020 17:38

Does average Joe Public know what a respiratory infection is and how that differs from a sniffle? Do we always know if we are feverish?

lalahotpants · 09/03/2020 17:39

Number of people who have died in Italy had increased by 97, total now 463

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 17:39

Bluntness How many have been tested in africa in comparison with europe? Just asking - not being goady - would be genuinely interested in the figures.

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 17:40

Bluntness, average UK death rate from flu is 600, not 17, 000

Jellykat · 09/03/2020 17:40

Cheltenham races still going ahead tomorrow, thats over 260,000 visitors to the town.. crammed pubs/wine bars/cafes. Great! Hmm

icecreamscoops · 09/03/2020 17:40

@Piggywaspushed that's what I was thinking! What are we going to be looking out for? Should we be testing temperatures every day?!

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 17:40

Very sad news again from Italy Sad I really hope that their quarantines make a difference.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 09/03/2020 17:41

tud Another thing that occurred to me is the amount of parents that rely on grandparents or other older ladies as wraparound childcare. If schools were closed without provision for lower waged / zero contact / self employed parents. Then the poor grands could unwittingly get leaned upon and therefore placed at greater risk providing additional help.

Delatron · 09/03/2020 17:42

He did say cancelling mass gatherings makes no difference and stopping flights from affected countries makes no difference. Cited Italy as stopping flights from China which had no impact. Temperature checks at airports also no impact.

I sensed in about 10-14 days then we may see events being cancelled. They are holding firm with their strategy of not doing much at the moment.

rosie1959 · 09/03/2020 17:43

Very sensible post Stircrazyschoolmum
I have been watching reports on tv It appears he has cross party agreement with the steps we are taking
When they do ramp up the rules ect no doubt people will still moan
This is a terrific task for any government so many questions on different areas of concern
7 days isolation for any cold/respiratory infection should help but will cause problems for many Tough measures but needed

colouringinpro · 09/03/2020 17:43

Surely the government should be advising everyone who can possibly work at home should do so. Commuter trains have to be major transmitters?

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 09/03/2020 17:43

No-one can demand the government to do anything in a crisis situation. In a few weeks we'll have similar scenes to Italy with many hundred deaths and people will maybe be a bit less selfish, hopefully.

The government has already said they'll have emergency funds available for those who suffer economically.

Random18 · 09/03/2020 17:43

Lang please provide me with your qualifications?

Since you seen so confident that you know more than the CMO and CSO?

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 17:43

Jellykat someone has to drink all that Guinness. Hmm

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 17:44

Stircrazy, don't forget about essential workers that have no choice but to go to work. It isn't just a financial issue, not all of us can just stay at home!

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 17:44

They are waiting for more deaths when they think the public will be clamouring for more action. I suspect they have a figure for when they will take action. A 100 deaths? 200?

goose1964 · 09/03/2020 17:44

There's a huge panic in my town because someone who works in a shop has returned from Venice and his area manager told him to go to work. To read facebook.you'd think someone had infected them with anthrax.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 17:44

PORTUGAL - 35 cases of coronavirus in total.
