Am interesting read, which gives an opinion on why people's views of this story of thing are often at either end of the spectrum (it'll all be fine / batten down the hatches and prepare for a big one) :

NemophilistRebel · 09/03/2020 17:08

Obviously that was a typo Hmm

WouldShouldCould · 09/03/2020 17:08

Do we know what are the underlying conditions of those who have died, ie are they complex medical needs or basic health issues that lots of over 60's have?

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 17:08

Boris Johnson just claimed the epidemiology is different in the UK. Live tv.

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 17:09

Journalists not having it. Johnson blustering.

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 17:10

Closing schools and cancelling mass gatherings in countries can be considered in countries where the virus is rife, he says. if this is WHO statement then agree with pp it’s not rife in the U.K.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 17:10

@WouldShouldCould Respiratory conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.

Violetparis · 09/03/2020 17:10

Watching the press conference, wish someone would ask if/why the science is different in the UK.

Delatron · 09/03/2020 17:10

Yes he did. It’s very different over here apparently 🙄. Therefore we shouldn’t look at what other countries have done. We should follow our own plan.

Random18 · 09/03/2020 17:10

Lang of course life is important. But if it's too soon to take these actions then it's too soon.

If people take their children out of school at this time, then that is their choice. But I do not think the government should enable it.

All will happen is folk will take kids out of school and go on a cheap holiday.

WouldShouldCould · 09/03/2020 17:11

Also interesting that France have decided to cancel the 6 nation's game but Wales v Scotland is still going ahead. So France are taking it moreg seriously!

fezzesarecool · 09/03/2020 17:12

The current strategy of just containing COVID-19 is "extremely unlikely to work on its own", the prime minister said

No shit

Ontopofthesunset · 09/03/2020 17:12

No one knows what the death rate is - that is why different rates are being quoted. The WHO says death rate to date has been 3.4% but they don't think that is what it will probably be in the end. Various different experts have analysed the data and come up with different bands. All those people on these threads who were panicking about the Worldometers 18% death rate should be reassured that it has now come down to 6% and the percentage of those in serious or critical condition has gone down to 13% from 20%.

No one is trying to mislead you. People with more expertise than me (and maybe than you) are making complicated decisions based on all sorts of moving parts - health, hospital capacity, economy, people's livelihood's, frontline staff etc. They may not always get it right but they are not deliberately trying to get it wrong. There isn't necessarily a 'right' way to get it as this is a new and evolving situation. Closing schools brings all sorts of other problems. In Japan children are going to day care instead of school. How does that help?

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 17:14

Where has the 7 days isolation advice come from? I've only just tuned into the the news conference so missed the start.

catsandlavender · 09/03/2020 17:15

Is this a typo? Does it mean to say “now” instead of “not”? Because all I’m getting from this is they know what they’re doing won’t work but they’re not prepared to do anything about it.

Chief medical officer also saying that they’ll ask people with mild colds to self isolate in two weeks because they’ll probably have CV then. Literally just sounds like they’re waiting for it to get really bad and then they’ll do something.

I’m not sitting here claiming to have al the answers but Jesus Christ.

wherearemychickens · 09/03/2020 17:15

The death rate is also depend on the ability of the health care system to respond, surely?

Random18 · 09/03/2020 17:15

Marsha it doesn't fit the rhetoric on this board though so has conveniently been ignored.

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 17:15

Chris Whittey just went there ... 'those who will benefit most from being in hospital ...'

Johnson palming off questions on food supply to the elderly to Chris Whittey they who talks of 'clinical need' ...

catsandlavender · 09/03/2020 17:15

My photo didn’t attach, whoops.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 09/03/2020 17:17

That must be a typo @catsandlavender as the BBC website reports:

He said the UK government is making "extensive preparations" for a move to the delay phase of its response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The UK will remain in the "containment" stage of its response for now, Mr Johnson said.

catsandlavender · 09/03/2020 17:18

@MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet thank god I thought it must be. Bad typo to make!

Nomorewineever · 09/03/2020 17:23

Please someone explain, I’ve been reading threads but I’m utterly confused and want to be prepared (mentally)....

They’ve just said on the news that the delay phase which will happen within 10-14 days, part of that will be that anyone with any hint of a virus type illness (cough, cold, etc) will be asked to self isolate. Will the whole family be asked to do this? And if not, how does it help? This is the part I can’t understand.

LambriniSocialist · 09/03/2020 17:23

On average over a year 153 people across the world die from flu.

Huh? That is utter bollocks surely?

neveradullmoment99 · 09/03/2020 17:24

Are any other countries doing absolutely nothing other than repeating ‘Wash your hands’ or is it just us?

Good question

We are screwed!!!

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 17:25

The UK is 'very close' to forcing seven-day self-isolation upon anyone with 'even minor respiratory tract infections or a fever'

England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty says the UK will reach that stage 'probably within the next 10-14 days' t.co/Lak8NB6KKH t.co/xOHAVrRI52
