@pussycatinboots
So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!

It's very close to my work now yet colleagues don't care..none have children either so they shrug their shoulders. I need to be well for my kids.

My colleagues didn't even seem to know about transmission through door handles etc. And one has been in a possibly infected workplace today. Woefully ignorant. But presenteeism is key and I feel like I can't raise this.

No working from home even mentioned, even though this would be easy for me.

Lumene · 09/03/2020 16:40

The WHO has not supported our approach which is why I think the government should explain why we are right (or waiting til the right time and when that will be) and why others are wrong.

Agree with this. That isn’t scaremongering. It’s scrutiny.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 16:40

Are any other countries doing absolutely nothing other than repeating ‘Wash your hands’ or is it just us?

All schools and universities in Qatar and Saudi have closed for the foreseeable future. They have 18 and 15 cases respectively.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 16:43

I am amazed at those telling everyone to stop panicking. Most people are not panicking at all. Most people I talk to are repeating its just like a cold or mild flu.
I also hate the criticising of those buying extra food and toilet rolls. People are being told they might need to self isolate for 2 weeks, so they are buying enough stuff to do that. That is sensible and reasonable. Most people I know do not keep 2 weeks of stuff in the house normally.

neveradullmoment99 · 09/03/2020 16:44

That's very worrying. I am a teacher in s primaty school. Kids are washing their hands. Not in secondary though. My dd is at secondary. Heard others saying the same about other secondary schools.

WHO: "It takes anywhere up to 6 weeks to recover from this disease"

"There is a difference from recovering from the virus infection and your body fully recovering from the impact of what can be a very serious infection"

(Press Briefing)
#COVID19

IrmaFayLear · 09/03/2020 16:46

Why are countries with dense populations, such as India and parts of Africa, not showing extensive infection? It can't be the heat, as the middle east is affected.

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/03/2020 16:46

Bluntness if you don't have the WHO briefing open: the DG was discussing trying not to reach the stage of community transmission and that delay and mitigation mean that the virus is out of control. They are talking about containment in terms of active, strong measures to prevent transmission, to control and stop the virus. Not just to delay transmission to protect health services, which they have mentioned too.

Direct comment just now: the thinking that 'let the wave pass over us' and hopes of herd immunity being achieved through it has to be balanced with needs of elderly, ill and vulnerable and their families, govts need to protect those communities and vulnerable people amongst them.

middleager · 09/03/2020 16:46

There were no known cases in Wolverhampton (said upthread).
One of the first people to catch it was a man from Wolverhampton who was with his wife (on cruise ship).

We heard lots about him but nothing about her.

Delatron · 09/03/2020 16:47

Well the government must have information that we are not privy to. They are not cancelling any big events and it’s business as usual. I hope these decisions don’t backfire massively. Looking at how proactive other countries have been stopping flights, cancelling large events etc.

Egghead68 · 09/03/2020 16:47

Are any other countries doing absolutely nothing other than repeating ‘Wash your hands’ or is it just us?

Good question

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 16:47

Does anyone have any up to date info or a link to which towns are affected? According the the gov website there are no cases in Stockport but that's not true as the patient in wythenshawe hospital is from Stockport. I'm not sure if this is the same patient as the one from Gatley. I'm not sure it matters where the cases are particularly but I'm nosey and I think it helps the dis object between the news and the view outside to know what is happening locally.

The situation in Spain isn't good. I hope our family member won't be visiting here seeing as they've been there. Although it's more the fact they've been through two airports twice and mixed with who knows who from who knows where and they are the type to minimise everything. They think a no deal brexit will be fine for example.

Plantpotpot · 09/03/2020 16:47

Hasn’t Donald Trump got a point?

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 16:48

If you keep talking about self isolation and people taking responsibility, then of course they are going to buy enough to feed themselves for 2 weeks. What the Government says has consequences. Instead they like to say this and then blame people saying they are selfish.

Same with the sanitiser and soap. Most people do not use hand sanitiser. So if you tell people to do that then they go and buy a few bottles. Lots of people do not wash their hands much at all, so they buy extra soap.
This is not rocket science.
The hand sanitiser by the touch screen in my GP surgery had run out. When I go in normally I am the only person I see using it. Now most were trying to use it - so it runs out.

This is perfectly rational behaviour. It is a tiny number of people stocking up for 6 months, in most cases people are doing what they are being told.

Bluntness100 · 09/03/2020 16:49

People are being told they might need to self isolate for 2 weeks, so they are buying enough stuff to do that

No they aren’t, twats are out there buying hundreds of toilet rolls. Not enough to do them a couple of weeks, or even a month, or even a year, they are buying years worth.

One woman bought two thousand ffs.

Delatron · 09/03/2020 16:49

On 5live now they are saying how wonderful the Cheltenham cup is going to be! Yes that’s a necessity, bloody horse racing!

Quartz2208 · 09/03/2020 16:50

the 6 week recovery though sounds about right for a serious virus, having had flu, chicken pox as an adult and some other awful virus in all times it took that amount of time to properly recover. So that sounds about right

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 16:50

@IrmaFayLear I suspect lack of testing, but it is also a very young population which offers some protection.

Egghead68 · 09/03/2020 16:50

I've been contacted by a respiratory nurse at the hospital, she was passing on advice from the consultant. Stay at home and be very selective about who you are having contact with.

I have a serious respiratory condition and my respiratory team's advice about whether I should work from home rather than with the public was:

"“She should speak to her HR at her work regarding her concerns and follow local recommendations. All business are developing remote working guidance at this time.

Any changes to working practice need to be agreed between employee and employer."

i.e. no advice at all about whether or not it is safe for me to be around other people. Thanks for nothing!

cjt110 · 09/03/2020 16:51

I saw a pack of 9 loo rolls being sold on Facebook market place for £45 last night. But it was OK of course because they were going to donate any proceeds to the local hospice.

Random18 · 09/03/2020 16:51

Closing schools and cancelling mass gatherings in countries can be considered in countries where the virus is rife, he says.

Why hasn't this been mentioned when discussing the WHO comments.

It is NOT rife in UK yet.
