I think we do need to remember that everyone is commenting based on nothing more than media reports and so called experts giving their opinion.

The government does have more information than is published, and that information will be the info that is shared globally and be partly from organisations like who.

They also need to balance risk with what occurs when they shut the economy down.

I think people need to assume that media speculation and let’s face it some hysteria may not be the full facts and that decisions are being made based on something other than the daily mail scare mongering.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:24

and as pp said, only the govt can remove all penalties for those who choose to keep kids home

Jerseygaly · 09/03/2020 16:25

I expected are cases from cruise ships from around nov/dec time who have been in hospital a while.

oneteen · 09/03/2020 16:25

MK Hospital - having a whinge about HCE stating that because they are not being asked to test some patients because the country is no on the list :

It is understood he or she has recently returned from a Spanish island, which is not flagged up by the NHS as a coronovirus risk area. But hospital staff decided to carry out a test to "be on the safe side" said a source.

From WHO

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. the director general, says the world “is not at the mercy” of the virus. He says with decisive, early action the spread of the virus can be slowed.

But presumably it won’t be slowed by a policy of delaying, dithering and dicking about.

Foobydoo · 09/03/2020 16:26

Matt Hancock keeps emphasising that they are following the science, yet he is being very vague about the exact scientific evidence they are following, is this available to view?
I would also like to see evidence that the deathrate is likely to be less than 1%. Does anyone know if this is available also? I know it is predictions at this stage but it feels as though the government are cherry picking figures that suit them.
I think the death rate will be considerably higher than 1%.

oneteen · 09/03/2020 16:26

Its very clear that testing needs to be extended now...

A D.C. priest has Coronavirus. He offered communion and shook hands with more than 500 worshippers last week and on February 24th. All worshippers who visited the Christ Church in Georgetown must self-quarantine. Church is cancelled for the first time since the 1800's

I read a good post from a pp in UAE a good coordinated effort, with one big difference to U.K. high number of sahms and private help.

Light implementation cancelling big events and wfh guidance I’m not against.

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 16:28

Good point re the vaccine. It would be interesting to have more thorough stats.

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 16:29

Yep. Angry

Nope, the director general of WHO has just spoken and called for 'decisive early action' and I don't think that was limited to going on TV illustrating handwashing and telling everyone to carry on as normal. He's just praised Italy's aggressive measures. The WHO has not supported our approach which is why I think the government should explain why we are right (or waiting til the right time and when that will be) and why others are wrong.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:31

"They also need to balance risk with what occurs when they shut the economy down."

They should definitely NOT shut the economy down

What they should be doing is taking prompt lower cost - or no cost - measures like some other countries are doing,
to avoid the need for more drastic action later

The UK govt seems to be gambling that there won't be too many cases and that it won't have to do anything to annoy anyone
That's a big gamble

Italy waited too long and now has over ¼ of its population in quarantine,
which probably has shut down a massive chunk of its economy

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/03/2020 16:32

It has reached my town now.

The main thing that concerns me about self isolation is that I live with an immunocompromised person. We only have one bathroom. I'd happily self isolate if I didn't risk making them ill. If it comes to it, and I'm ill, I'm not sure what I'm going to do...

Confuddledtown · 09/03/2020 16:33

I had to take my toddler dd for a docs appointment this afternoon. I was asked when booking the appointment if I had been travelling, was asked again while checking in, and asked twice by gp as well as my dd presented with some symptoms of CV. I was also asked this morning when going for my whooping cough vaccine. Seems to be a vast difference between GP surgeries going by pps. Some not asking any of the important questions and others resorting to telephone appointments only. I think ours has a good measure of being somewhere in between. Taking sensible precautions but not feeding into hysteria and panic. Also we dont have 111 here to fall back on.

Bluntness100 · 09/03/2020 16:34

I think the death rate will be considerably higher than 1%

You can google the scientific evidence, there are plenty of statements of the trials from who etc which support the one percent.

The WHO has not supported our approach

This is not correct. It’s an assumption. If the who didn’t support they’d friggen stand up and say it. They have not.

Why are people scare momgering? Is it not bad enough that people need to make shit up to make it seem worse?

WingingItSince1973 · 09/03/2020 16:35

So the child who has been confirmed as having coronavirus in the Rugby school actually lives in my town and his siblings goto the school locally where my mum works. Getting too close to home now. People he has been in contact with are self isolating along with pupils and families from my local school. Really hope for the best for the family and friends of this lad and that our school takes the appropriate measures.

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/03/2020 16:35

Watching the WHO live broadcast (Thank you for link)

They are clearly stating the need is to contain and control the virus and prevent it spreading, by decisive action to prevent transmission, and by not giving up and letting it spread.

This seems radically at odds with the UK govt's line of just wash hands, go out, crack on, it's going to spread significantly and oh well.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:35

Foobydoo My understanding of the low 1% death rate is that this is because typically in an epidemic the actual number of cases is much higher than detected.

A large number of cases are either too mild to be reported, or people don't report to avoid loss of income

e.g. Prof Ferguson of Imperial College estimates there are 3 x as many cases as reported, hence reducing the death rate to 1% or lower, in his opinion

Bluntness100 · 09/03/2020 16:37

It’s not, this is what containment is, what you’re thinking of is delay.

"If the who didn’t support they’d friggen stand up and say it."

They don't work that way
They have to be respectful towards governments

They have gone as far as they can in statements about not taking it seriously, without mentioning names

but they would NEVER specifically cite the UK government, barring utter catastrophe

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 16:38

ofwarren any news on "the donald"s take on that?

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 16:39

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: "Now that the virus has a foothold in so many countries, the threat of a pandemic has become very real."
