Why do people need the government to tell them to do certain things tho.

I just need them to tell me I won't be fined for taking dc out of school.

Obviously if anything happens before then like parliament closing or a confirmed case in school I'll be pulling them out regardless.

But until then I am in effect waiting for the government to relax those fines. Judging by the amount of action they've taken to date though, I'm guessing that won't be happening before I end up taking them out.

SPAIN— A 97-year-old man and an 88-year-old woman in #Catalonia have died of #coronavirus

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 16:11

I wonder how many would take their dc out of schools if fines were dropped.

TheRealHousewife · 09/03/2020 16:12

@Frazzled2207 Did you open the link?

It clearly stated UK. ‘As of 9am on 9 March 2020, 24,960 people have been tested in the UK, of which 24,641 were confirmed negative and 319 were confirmed as positive. Three patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have died.’ I’m not wanting a bun fight Smile

Bourdic · 09/03/2020 16:13

Tbf the flu vaccine is not fully effective. Last year was 62% for the over 65s jab ( which was a different one from the under 65s).Its often only 50%ish effective. Sadly, apparently ( and stupidly imo) we don’t cross match flu deaths with vaccine status. In addition and again sadly, only about 75% of over 65s get the jab .

Quartz2208 · 09/03/2020 16:13

Clear already we will have higher than 1% of cases die at least.

Well no not at all I agree with Avocado Owl not only is this actually a 1.2% death rate of the known cases given the deaths had no known travel history people just havent been tested

NeilTheBaby · 09/03/2020 16:13

Sorry if this has already been asked- can't keep up with it all.

Why are the NHS only concerned with ill people who have been to certain countries or been in contact with known covid-19 carriers?

On Thursday I woke up with an horrendous chesty cough. Spent Friday and Saturday flat out in bed. Felt a little better yesterday and 80% better today.

Now I don't think I had anything more than a cough but I do live in a town with 3 confirmed cases, 2 of which were caught in the uk so it seems odd to me that nhs111 says because I've not been abroad or been in contact (that I am aware of) with a carrier I don't need testing.

Surely with the numbers we have now we should be testing/ isolating people showing symptoms from inside??

Frazzled2207 · 09/03/2020 16:13

@TheRealHousewife
Yes I did and I apologised for getting it wrong upthread

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 16:14

Frouby agree there are economic considerations that effect livelihoods and it can be particularly heavy in those at the middle and ultimately bottom of the system.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:14

Frouby Cancelling big public events of course has some costs

  • Germany has cancelled international trade fairs costing probably hundreds of millions in total.

However, it's still much less than the cost of taking much more drastic mesaaures later which affect everyone

It is possible to compensate the comparatively small number of businesses and workers affected by cancelling big events

However, is not practical for many workers to stay home

Basically, we have to choose measures that have the least cost to the the least number of people, but that are still useful

Unfortunately, it seems noone want any measures that affects anything they enjoy, or earn from

(Hence why the government is doing so little - looks like doing anything will be politically unpopular - unless / until it becomes an emergency, in which case they will be in trouble)

oneteen
We did know through local press yesterday, and I posted up-thread about a case in Wolverhampton.

Very sad - and a little worrying.

thegreylady · 09/03/2020 16:17

The UK is still accepting flights from all areas of Italy. My cousin flew in from Milan on Saturday and there were no checks at all. They were given a card with symptoms and told to self isolate and ring 111 if any developed. Then they all dispersed. My cousin had his car but many would be using public transport.

seasmize · 09/03/2020 16:17

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus

Thank you!

Jerseygaly · 09/03/2020 16:18

Agree they just need to say it. I'm sure they're too busy to be bothering with that anyway.
They need to suspend that anyway with loads self isolating

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:19

"Why do people need the government to tell them to do certain things tho."

tud41 because of all the "it's only flu" messages and the "hysterical scaremongering" telling them not to

btw, I wonder if quite a lot of these posts are by self-employed and small business owners who would be badly hit if people did these sensible things

Also people are very reluctant anyway to do anything that inconveniences or costs them unless encouraged
Hence why governments give out advice about health, alcohol, exercise etc

Carlislemumof4 · 09/03/2020 16:20

Fourteen school days left until the Easter holidays. It absolutely would make an enormous difference to the rate of spread of the virus if the government announced this evening all parents have the option to keep their children at home for the next two and a half weeks without facing sanctions.

Feeling frustrated and rather desperate now at the lack of action on this.

Rocketmam · 09/03/2020 16:20

WHO 'With decisive early action, we can...'

UK GOV 'Nah!'

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 16:21

Fourteen school days left until the Easter holidays.

Not here-it’s nearly 4 weeks to go till we break up Sad.

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 16:21

We've pretty much lost control of the population here... We couldn't trace anyone. We seem to be v good at counter terrorism and stuff like that but having even a loose hold over what people are doing, crap.

Who is going to report into 111 from Italy if they fall ill?

Unless they get questions in hospital no one will know.

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 16:23

The SME consideration is more to counteract it’s Boris and his rich friends posts. The economy tanking hits the casual workers / employees the just as hard.

People can look at the bigger picture.

Nearlyalmost50 · 09/03/2020 16:23

People are talking as if we are the only country whose economy is going to be hit by taking measures. Every other country has the same problems- what to do for low or zero hours paid employees, how to get health service employees to work if childcare out, what happens to the economy esp services and hospitality, we are not the only ones.

The scientific advice is clear: acting too early creates its own risk. So we will do what is right to keep people safe. Guided by the science, we will act at the right time This is what Matt Hancock has said. I think they need to be clearer though- what is the risk of acting early? To whom? Is this a financial/economic risk or a risk of a different disease pattern? Why are we out of step with other European countries on this and what are they risking?
