.@CMO_England has confirmed a fourth patient in England who tested positive for coronavirus (#COVID19) has died.

The patient was being treated at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospital and had underlying health conditions.

Clear already we will have higher than 1% of cases die at least. How many that is of the population is a different question.Germany and China are very efficient I would learn from them.
Although other places seem to benefit from it being a certain area. Wuhan, North Italy even France is I assume south.
I think not advising against flying goes with their narrative this isn't very serious.

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/03/2020 16:00

When BJ made that comment on tv about 'one line of thought is just to let it happen' he appears to have been voicing the prevalent thoughts of COBRA.

OldQueen1969 · 09/03/2020 16:00

@Eeyoresstickhouse

Just been checking the local rag - yup - that's four cases in the area now. Keeping up with the live feed - comments below the lines are still largely dismissive and somewhat scathing of anyone expressing concern......

Was in Bomo town centre this morning and it was even quieter than usual - maybe the weather, maybe not - who knows.....

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 09/03/2020 16:02

The WHO are about to hold a live update.. will they declare a pandemic?

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/03/2020 16:02

I was in the supermarket today and chatting to somebody. She told me she wasn't remotely worried about the virus as she's female and has daughters. Apparently, women/girls can't catch it. I shit you not.

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 16:02

People over the age of 65 with underlying conditions are offered an annual flu vaccination so I'm not sure why people are saying the covid-19 victims would have died from flu anyway. Over 65s with underlying conditions would have been vaccinated and therefore not died of flu.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:03

pussy So maybe not so much that the expert advice was wrong, more naive

  • they assumed that the building followed fire recommendations, because using a loophole was so obviously irresponsible and could lead to catastrophe ....
Defenbaker · 09/03/2020 16:03

Perhaps Germany is being extremely efficient in their treatment of patients, or they have just been fortunate, so far. Another explanation is that they are holding back information about deaths, for their own reasons.

On the news today some chap said that he thinks we are probably around one week behind Germany and France in the rate of infection, and 2 weeks behind Italy. If that is the case then panic could set in towards the end of March, when the penny funally drops with all the "it's only flu, nothing serious" brigade. So, is it time to close schools? If that happens now, will it help much, if the denial brigade just carry on attending social gatherings, sports events, concerts, etc, like nothing is wrong? Would they need to shut all pubs, cinemas etc to really slow down the spread? Who would take the financial hit for all the people off work, due to looking after their chikdren at home for weeks? How many employers could afford to pay employees for all those extra weeks off, without going bust? I don't envy the government in having to make these difficult decisions, this is a really tricky thing to manage.

seasmize · 09/03/2020 16:03

Germany just announced its first two deaths.

I would like to know if this latest death in the U.K. had any travel links. They’ve stopped telling us that with the cases, which I find concerning.

OldQueen1969 · 09/03/2020 16:04

Oh hang on - maybe it's three cases - maybe the shoe shop one was one of the two reported over the weekend - reporting not very specific.....

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 16:05

"China "real-life" is not UK "real-life"

bluntness As I posted, a democracy cannot apply the panoply of draconian measures that a dictatorship did.
We can't copy what they did to contain
We can only learn from the trends which are the key points to tackle in ways that the public will accept.

Frouby · 09/03/2020 16:05

@alloutoffucks I definitely don't move in rich circles. But if they start closing/shutting schools, public events, stopping people working self employed people don't have an income and can't claim any SSP. Add to that the economy crashing even further we probably won't even have work to go back to and it can take years to recover the economy, it's only been the last year or so the building trade has picked up from the last crash.

I get what you are saying about losing your job, but the government saying 'stay at home' doesn't stop people losing their livelihoods. It's like people saying cancel Cheltenham. It's not just a load of toffs looking forward to a piss up and a few bets, it keeps many local and national businesses afloat and companies in business, which in turn keeps families fed and housed.

If people were genuinely, horrifically scared of this they would stay home. It's as simple as that. It's completely possible to self isolate for however long it takes. It wont have good consequences for your family, financially. But at least you will be alive.

But people don't want to do that because although they are anxious about it, they know realistically the chances of getting it, and then actually being seriously ill or even dying from it, are absolutely miniscule at this moment in time. A lot less chance of dying from CV than getting hit by a car for instance.

People just want something to happen, for someone to take some kind of action. There isn't any action for anyone to take other than people to self isolate if they have travelled to affected areas or have been jn contact with someone who has the illness other than wash your hands, don't lick anything, don't buy all the bog roll.

That's all we need to do.

And am sorry to single you out but you were the only pp I could remember because I love your username.

justchecking1 · 09/03/2020 16:05

Eeyoresstickhouse · 09/03/2020 16:06

oldqueen its confusing until they update the location numbers. It could be 3 or 4 at the moment.

tud41 · 09/03/2020 16:06

Why do people need the government to tell them to do certain things tho. surely its common sense for the elderly to not mix in big crowds at the moment. If they are still doing that now they will still do it if the government doesn't recommend it

People are praising Germany etc for there government but they have 3 times as many cases as we do! The only measures that we know are effective at the moment is that of China but we can all agree were not going to be doing the same as they did.

People cant just rely on the government to tell them what to do. Boris isnt going to rub your tummy telling you everything will be ok. Nobody can possibly say at the moment if the governments response has been good as we will need to wait a few weeks to see how things develop

justchecking1 · 09/03/2020 16:06

No travel history

worried about coronavirus (covid19) part 18
Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 09/03/2020 16:07

I can't help thinking we need to take responsibility for ourselves - work from home if you can, take kids out of school if you can, limit travel and social engagements as much as you can - because everyone who takes some social distancing measure will help break transmission chain and be doing their own bit for our NHS and wider community health.

Yes, this, and be clear we are doing this on social media. So many posts saying it's all a panic. NO, be responsible. You don't have to go to the pub or cinema, just do some basic social distancing for non-essential stuff - that would make a big difference.

Why hasn't the gov't said we can take kids out without penalty? I've written to my MP asking this - suggest you all do too.

It is worrying that the 4 people who have died don't seem to have been registered as known cases before...there were no cases in Wolverhampton and now someone has sadly died - the same for Milton Keynes.

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 16:09

So no travel history yet was tested. So again, there is evidence that people with no travel history are being tested.

Thoughts are with the family Flowers

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 16:10

BCF No one knew that the Agrement Certificates which rely on testing could be, shall we say, "circumvented" by using a desk top study rather than a sample of the material and a box of matches IYSWIM.
You could rebuild Grenfell today. Identical to how it was originally constructed, with an improvement to the thermal elements, and it would comply. It could even be refurbished (depending on the damage from the fire/water) Shock

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 16:10

Oneteen, remember just because they were in hospital there, doesn't mean they were from the immediate area.

Quartz2208 · 09/03/2020 16:10

it must mean that there are people walking around with mild symptoms affecting people

similar to italy

AvocadoOwl · 09/03/2020 16:10

Clear already we will have higher than 1% of cases die at least.

It's not clear at all.

No one knows the true number of cases actually out there.
