Eeyore it's just pure stupidity and greed.
Aintree will not happen (unless behind v tight controls) Guineas, Derby, Royal Ascot, Goodwood...
Lots of people travel in the UK to race meetings (DH has been to every track) keeping racing going is a disaster for "control", but it keeps the poor bookies happy. Angry

Tokyo thanks, watching sky now.

Youngatheart00 · 09/03/2020 15:39

Appalled by the government’s lack of action and guidance / direction to the population. Feel Germany have got it pretty much spot on.

Sorry, I have misquoted Neil Ferguson somewhat: his original quote is here:

When Premiership matches (and other similar gatherings) are cancelled, or played without fans, is the day I will believe containment.

Cheltenham is going ahead, and I am very sure there are many other gatherings of thousands upcoming in NEC, and places like it in London and elsewhere.

It is all Mammon.

kateandme · 09/03/2020 15:42

are they not able to stock up in stores becasue its so sudden or because all industries are effected so supply cant meet demand.because everything is unavailable here.and its ging quicker than they can get it.

WingingItSince1973 · 09/03/2020 15:43

4th person in the uk just died 😭

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 15:45

"Grenfell Tower - people followed official advice and lost their lives"

iirc, that was only because the fire brigade assumed the building complied with the regs
The advice would have been correct if it did

tud41 · 09/03/2020 15:47

I suppose we have the media on side side getting everyone in panic stations and then the government on the other side with the keep calm and wash your hands approach. when the reality of where we should be is probably somewhere in the middle. Sometimes i question if the government are so laid back about it because they need to try and offset the panic that the media have caused.

seasmize · 09/03/2020 15:47

And yet Germany has 1100 cases and no deaths.

tud41 · 09/03/2020 15:47

one side*

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 15:47

"real-life China"

The statistics of age etc are useful to learn from,
but the measures a dicatorship can take would absolutely not be possible in a democracy

China "real-life" is not UK "real-life"

Eeyoresstickhouse · 09/03/2020 15:48

Another case locally in a clarks shoe shop. No information if they were in isolation before they were diagnosed or not. That could be a lot of community transmission!

tud41 · 09/03/2020 15:49

@seasmize yes but the deaths so far[pending info from the 4th] have come from people that quite likely would have died of normal flu anyway as they had serious or multiple underlying health problems.

cjt110 · 09/03/2020 15:50

*Germany has reported its first two confirmed death cases of the coronavirus, local authorities said.

A spokesman for the health ministry in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia said that an 89 year-old woman with coronavirus died in the town of Essen and that another patient died in the highly affected region of Heinsberg.*

Bluntness100 · 09/03/2020 15:50

China "real-life" is not UK "real-life"

I don’t really know what this means, but the who and other global organisations have been given unfettered access as said and they feel China has been very open and the stats they have provided are accurate.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 15:51

First German death just been reported

tud41 · 09/03/2020 15:52

@Bluntness100 this means that if our government tried to use the same measures as the Chinese government there would likely be mass civil unrest and it would not work.

BCF Re: Grenfell
I hate to say this, but technically the building did comply with Bldg Regs.

I sent this to my uncle a while after the fire:

we've been watching the developments following the fire at "Grenfell Tower" and it looks like the BBA certificate is the weak point. If you clad a tower block, as long as the material has a BBA cert, and the product is acceptable under part L (insulation) then it's fine. The rainscreen cladding they used does have a valid BBA cert (I googled it on the day of the fire), so any application under the Building Regs would not have affected part B (fire) and would have been rubber stamped under part L (insulation) only. DH said there's been a loophole with this since about 2000. that's a lot of cladding on a lot of buildings - hospitals, schools, colleges, hotels etc. Part B (fire) is only interested in fire spread to another building. Fires are not meant to escape from a flat and then creep/spread up the outside. they are supposed (designed) to be contained for an hour - enough time for Brigade to squirt water!! awful for those involved. I can understand their anger, but if any one/organisation is to blame, it's the Gov - both colours - They've been holding back on revising part B for more than a decade.

Sorry to all others about going off topic.

Helenj1977 · 09/03/2020 15:53

1 more death in the UK

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 15:55

"Sometimes i question if the government are so laid back about it because they need to try and offset the panic that the media have caused."

No,
Don't blame the media for government inadequacies

The government is not communicating well and has not made some obvious, very low-cost recommendations
which would reassure the public somewhat.

There would be much more calm if they looked like they they were taking this seriously and had a plan

  • that does NOT mean drastic measures like closing schools, but does require more than chortling about Happy Birthday and encouraging people to go out and spend

Public health authorities are doing their job, but the government looks lackadaisical

Naidex exhibition at the NEC was cancelled last week, due to take place next week.

I've been contacted by a respiratory nurse at the hospital, she was passing on advice from the consultant. Stay at home and be very selective about who you are having contact with.

I have a respiratory condition and a diagnosis of type two respiratory failure.
I worry that if I got ill there wouldn't be the ventilatory support I might need.

I'm very grateful for all the information being posted here.
