Nerr I agree.
there was 3.5 million bet on whether it would take place or not by yesterday (betfair) it looked pretty evenly priced either way.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 14:58

The supermarkets have said that there will not be any shortage of food or groceries, ^
except for hand gel

and goods like loo roll will continue to be restocked until people have no more room to hoard them

thesunwillout · 09/03/2020 14:59

No pasta in Tesco, mind you it's Monday so fingers crossed for a delivery. I think people have gone mad.
No loo roll in Morrisons.

People will be so bunged up with pasta they won't need the loo roll 😁

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2020 14:59

I popped in to my gp surgery today to get a repeat prescription and they were calling everyone to let them know it was telephone appointments only from now on.

Sounds sensible but a bit worried as I work in gp surgeries who are continuing as normal

It's a sensible idea

BUT

There will be people who this doesn't satisfy and their response will be to look to get treated elsewhere to 'get looked at properly' as they feel a telephone consultation is fobbing them off.

The net result is more people turning up at a & e. This has the effect of both increasing risk of infection there and putting strain on resources there. Longer waiting times for those who really are sick and additional stress for staff about to be bombarded with covid-19 cases before it does hit in full force.

The problem is that people do not respond in the way we would like them to in a Western democracy because its acceptable and encouraged to question authority. That's generally a healthy trait. However in a situation like this it causes issues.

It's very much the case that panic is a killer in its own right during a pandemic. It leads to things like civil unrest. It's part of the reason that China was so draconian in its approach - but it could do this because of how its population was preconditioned not to question authority and merely to obey.

It's the 'disaster movie' response where people do things you scream at the screen for them not to do because you know it will kill them, not the actual disaster itself.

Whilst everyone talks about how many deaths covid-19 could cause its important not to forget indirect deaths caused by measures taken to try and control covid-19. Example: the person who dies of a heart attack because the ambulance is busy with someone convinced they are about to die because they have a bit of a cough. Or the numbers who die in a prison riot because they aren't allowed to have time out their cells as usual.

My feeling to a certain extent is the horse has already bolted or that certain measures may well be counterproductive and not work in practice even though they seem really sensible.

Economically there are other issues going on which make us particularly fragile and that threat could also be catastrophic if things with COVID-19 are prolonged.

I don't know. The dither, delay, runaway thing I think has already happened and the window of opportunity has slipped by in many respects.

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 15:00

I know it's been asked before, but what time does the council list get updated?
this one
www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-england/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-england

and - is there a similar list for local councils in wales too?

seasmize · 09/03/2020 15:00

@NewElthamMum13

If you look you’ll find no reports on here or anywhere of anyone with symptoms being checked unless they’ve traveled to an infection zone or had contact with a diagnosed case (and only when symptomatic).

There seems to be a big hole in testing. Likely why we have essentially zero clusters in the numbers.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 09/03/2020 15:00

Shit. Theres a confirmed case in my school. However since the student didn't come in with symptoms they arent even closing for a deep clean. Just a carry on as normal. I am not happy

pigoons · 09/03/2020 15:02

Um I'm slightly cynical and think the gov is prioritising the economy / avoiding panic by not announcing more widespread measures to contain the virus. Nothing draconian- but I expected to see them encouraging employees to work from home if they can, cancelling sporting events, telling people to self isolate if they've returned from abroad etc etc

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 15:04

Genuine question. Right now, anyone displaying flu like symptoms obviously rings 111, gets referred for testing, confirmed corona virus etc

Nope, not as far as I can see. 111 have told people they won’t refer for testing unless they’ve travelled to one of the key areas.

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 15:05

It would seem prudent to do additional testing where there might be clusters forming, from epidemiological and medical opinion in an area?

Reading about Italy, there are some definite clusters and then it would make sense to put stricter measures in place there. It is these clusters that seem very problematic at this stage of the virus.

In Germany, where 1153 cases of coronavirus had been confirmed by 2pm local time, the health minister Jens Spah has appealed to citizens to travel as little as possible, to work from home, when possible, and to contact doctors by telephone in cases where the virus is suspected.

This just seems so sensible. Why is are government telling people they don’t have to stop travelling?!

OhMargo · 09/03/2020 15:09

I've just been listening to an interview with Rory Stewart on LBC (Shelagh Fogarty show).

What a sensible head he has. He really came across calmly but decisively regarding what he would do, what he thinks Government should do right now.

Was a great interview imo, but made me mad to think that Government and Cobra are thinking in the opposite direction. I urge you all to listen to it, and whether you agree or not, he is a voice of reason.

I know he is candidate for London Mayor, and a Tory but he made a lot of sense to me.

Should be on catch up on LBC later about 1hour 30 in or thereabouts.

I suppose the powers that be just have to rely on most people doing the right thing, regarding self-isolation. Of course there will be those who refuse to comply or just think it doesn't apply to them, or they'll "just pop out to the shops" etc.

Hmm like the ones still flying out to infected places after the fact you mean.

Or do you mean poorer people on key meters Who "just have to pop out to the shops" or do without electric. The ones who the blame will likely be passed on to. Even though many of us either have never been abroad at all because we cant afford it or not been abroad for years/decades for the same reason. Im half Italian and have family there who ive not seen since 1983 since i was ten years old.

Ive said on these threads that the blame will be passed on to poorer communities when they have no choice but to break quarantine. How the fuck do you think they are going to follow the basic hygiene required without electric.

Ive also said on these threads that the expectations regarding this on those lower down the socio economic scale will be higher,

We have already seen this on the threads about care homes on this board with regards to care workers.

This is something that wasnt caused by poorer communities but that hasnt stopped certain quarters trying to shift blame and having higher expectations of them than of people still jetting off on planes and cruises.

I really dont think poorer communities will accept this

They didnt bring this shit into this country. And there is no getting away from this no matter how hard you try.

Dusty01 · 09/03/2020 15:10

Someone posted this earlier on. Around 32 mins in they talk about the measures that China took and when we may have to do similar.

I found it very interesting - thank you to whoever posted it.

DreamALittleDreamofMe · 09/03/2020 15:11

First case has just been confirmed on our little island - I am concerned, even when we have a storm and the boats can’t come in the shelves are bare and it’s hard to get food. We don’t have home deliveries here so I am a bit worried to see how it goes.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 15:14

Nearly This advice isn't really new, just made more formal now
We ( Germany) have been doing this for the last few weeks now, certainly in my area
It is a sensible compromise, imo

We have been encouraged to stop handshakes, too.

It hasn't impacted most daily lives, except for those in the hospitality, entertainment, travel industries
Reportedly help will be offered to those in difficulties in those industries

No, we haven't been encouraged to go out and keep spending

btw, phoning your GP here is more practical as Germany has far more doctors per 10,000 population than the UK

We don't want schools closed unless absolutely essential, for the same reasons as the UK
The coalition government consists of parties of the moderate right, left & centre so it is not a matter of ruthless capitalists, but of economic and social reality

Important difference to the UK - no loss in pay for isolating:

German workers receive full pay for up to 6 weeks for any illness, including any self-isolation
(thereafter 80% of full pay from the state / firm / private health insurance)

Self-isolation - when ordered - is monitored, with penalties for breaking it

Another difference:

The BKK (Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance) has recommended

  • years before the Coronavirus - that Germans stockpile 10 days worth of groceries, in case of some disaster

So it's not been an issue adding an extra 4 days just in case of isolation - this is just normal

seasmize · 09/03/2020 15:16

“The number of UK coronavirus cases is probably so low because testing is so slow! I’ve now been in self-isolation for 5 days pending the outcome of a test!”

Gp's not seeing patients in person is worrying.

Before christmas my youngest had a little bit of a rash and had been sick once a few days earlier. His temp was borderline.

If I had phoned 111, or even a GP consult over the phone they would probably have said virus.

Actually it was scarlet Fever - I clicked with the rash as he had it before but it was a minor rash. Nothing like the pics you see.

It may be a minor illness now but it is still important to treat with antibiotics.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 15:26

Anecdata I know, @red but in my area there does seem to have been good compliance with phoning the doctor etc

  • maybe because that doctor has always been so much easier to get hold of in normal times

My GP surgery - and afaik all others here - are still running as normal
I popped in to collect my eye drop prescription, all calm,, no queues
it is just Coronavirus that would need a telephone consultation - and it would be priority 1.

Also, A&E has never become a standard alternative here to visiting the GP,
because usually a GP appointment can be made same day
(I'm sure there must be exceptions in a few areas, but I've never had a problem in over 30 years)

So, in a crisis, people seem to be sticking to these rules because the system worked before
and they never got in the habit of circumventing rules

Eeyoresstickhouse · 09/03/2020 15:27

St Patrick's Day parade cancelled, and yet we allow Cheltenham to go on. Madness!

mac12 · 09/03/2020 15:30

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus I agree with your analysis of this. The UK is being uniquely laissez faire with this and I am rapidly losing confidence in our PH advisors, who seem very reliant on modelling rather than the the actual real-life clinical evidence coming out of China and Italy.
I can't help thinking we need to take responsibility for ourselves - work from home if you can, take kids out of school if you can, limit travel and social engagements as much as you can - because everyone who takes some social distancing measure will help break transmission chain and be doing their own bit for our NHS and wider community health. I think back to Grenfell Tower - people followed official advice and lost their lives. I have no confidence in Boris and co to do the right thing for us. And I can't help thinking, the stock markets would also appreciate some clear leadership on this. At the moment, our approach feels like a huge gamble.

Mummylin · 09/03/2020 15:31

Eyore there is 1 person from a Poole gym has the virus. Gym has been closed for deep cleaning. It's on Nuffield estate.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 09/03/2020 15:33

mummy I knew about that one. I don't know if the student is patient 2 from those announced yesterday or a new patient as the locations haven't been updated yet for today. The student is very close to home as I work in HE at the location.

TokyoSushi · 09/03/2020 15:34

Matt Hancock live in the Commons on Sky News now, says there are 4 deaths - did we know that?
