Closing schools won't help. People who can work from home should. People who are ill or elderly should self isolate

Yes, I agree, but the government have said no, elderly people should just go out. And wash their hands.

The WHO report couldn't have been clearer- China has only been able to contain and stop this (current) outbreak by the most stringent methods possible.

I feel we are being used as some type of an experiment - what happens if you do nothing! Like a control for China.

I am not for full scale closure of everything, but advising elderly people to carry on as normal, without even a bit of social distancing, or preparation of food in- really? Not even to get stocked up for a week? Speak to neighbours about how they might cope if they need to be more isolated? (not full isolation, just limit social contact).

This government have clearly decided the risk to the economy is too great to collapse everything to contain the virus and it's much better if we all just keep spending. So, business as usual then. This is a huge gamble for Boris and it will bite him on the arse.

@Discobar

I’m trying but HR are dragging feet. I am a manager and don’t have enough laptops for my team though my company holds many in stock. With a nudge from the government I think we would get these supplied.I won’t wfh until we all can . Most people have kids/older family or health conditions they are worried about.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/03/2020 14:05

The annual flu reports and the weekly flu reports are all published, I would like to be wrong. I'd very much like to think they haven't just taken an average of the last five years and then said, "this will be the number of flu deaths and look, now covid doesn't look so bad". So please, if anyone has the energy or inclination, I'd be over the moon if they are not minimising.

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/03/2020 14:05

Prisoners broke into the infirmary and 6 of them committed suicide? That sounds really strange confused

I would reposition that as criminals break into infirmary get unrestricted access to large amount of drugs and die of overdoses. Sounds a little bit less strange unfortunately.

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 14:05

This is a huge gamble for Boris and it will bite him on the arse.

Agree

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 14:06

cjt110, why do you not believe it was flu, despite having lab results confirming it? Flu can be a horrible nasty illness, your experience of flu is not unusual at all.

EnidBlyton · 09/03/2020 14:06

319 in UK positive now

KenAdams · 09/03/2020 14:06

I think last week the Monday and Tuesday figures were lower as they do fewer tests at the weekend so the big jump is expected on Wednesday which is the same day as the next COBR meeting.

kazzymac · 09/03/2020 14:06

My sister works in a school in Qatar. All schools and unis to be shut from today, compulsory leave to be taken. She said there's no restrictions on movement in place yet. No reporting on BBC for this.

seasmize · 09/03/2020 14:07

Just 1400 tests.

They really need to broaden the criteria. Spain is exploding today.

I find it impossible to believe that France, Germany, and Spain all have over 1000 and there are so few here. Especially as we know there is community spread.

TheRealHousewife · 09/03/2020 14:08

319 now infected in the UK See here

Dusty01 · 09/03/2020 14:08

But they are only testing those who have been abroad.

This is not an accurate figure.

FurForksSake · 09/03/2020 14:10

I guess the weekend will be one of the reasons they did less tests and the numbers are lower. Wednesday will be telling for case numbers, I think.

Newleafinspring · 09/03/2020 14:10

So, the government's approach looks like, let us embrace it, only 2-3% will die anyway. If it is the case, I would rather no information about the case number etc is published each day, so we don't need to worry about it.

Horehound · 09/03/2020 14:10

So that's less than yesterday.. good news

Dusty01 · 09/03/2020 14:11

I feel we are being used as some type of an experiment - what happens if you do nothing! Like a control for China.

It does feel like that ... could that be true?

Jerseygaly · 09/03/2020 14:11

I think the percentage would be 3.4% until dropping due to herd immunity.
They want it to look like something will be done. But it will be too late you will already be infected.
People misunderstand the risk of those numbers. If there's 200+ can't remember it is completely inaccurate. And of course children carriers but asymptomatic.

MmeAlice · 09/03/2020 14:12

Posting figures for my home country of Danmark, which I am watching climb with morbid fascination. we jumped from 33 cases in total yesterday to 59 cases today. Our government has told all Danish citizens in northern Italy to get themselves home as soon as possible. No idea what the plans are for how they are received back into the country. There is a direct trainline from the main airport to Copenhagen. Are they all just going to jump on the train and dissipate? They have been advised to self-quarantine for 14 days, but they need to get home in the first place. Sorry, just musing. And I have to say, my personal opinion and experience of Danes is that they can be a little arrogant and like to think they know best. Only time will tell.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 14:12

There is a programme of 100 clinical settings testing patients with viral symptoms (locations unknown) as a basis for extrapolation tongreater population.

Doing that at every surgery,. providing the basis of their sciencd is right, won't alter anything.

The only thing that would alter the basis of everything is testing the asymptomatic (i.e. everyone in the UK regardless of anything)

OP posts:
FurForksSake · 09/03/2020 14:12

I wonder if that means around 1500 are the contact tracing and returners from abroad and 500ish are the Sentinal tests? They probably wouldn't be done over the weekend.

MrsStrangerThing · 09/03/2020 14:13

Dusty, I have said many time son here that just isn't true. I really wish that people would stop repeating it!

www.pulsetoday.co.uk/news/first-coronavirus-patients-detected-via-opportunistic-gp-testing/20040271.article

ClientQueen · 09/03/2020 14:13

The U.K. figures must only be so low through the amount of tests being done. So that's what 46 in 1400... 3.2%
Still a fair few

DameHannahRelf · 09/03/2020 14:13

113 new confirmed cases, since 8.00am yesterday, 46 since 8.00am today.

JulietteLeGall · 09/03/2020 14:13

Yes you can have the virus, not know, and be infectious. So, not have any symptoms, in the run up to getting symptoms, or remaining without any symptoms, but still be infectious

So it is too late then - unless they had decided to put in place the measures seen elsewhere, which they haven't so every man for himself then I guess

Frouby · 09/03/2020 14:13

But anyone can chose to isolate themselves, you don't need to be told to by the government.

If you are seriously worried isolate yourselves. Don't wait for the government to do it for you. Get a sick note (stress related) and stay home.

You don't need the government to do it for you, we all have free will. We can all access online food deliveries etc. If you have dcs pull them out of school and HE. No one can force you to leave the house ever again.

But let the rest of us just go about our business. We will wash our hands, avoid unnecessary risk and self isolate if we get ill. Take all the precautions we are told. There are just over 300 confirmed cases in a country with a population of 66 million. 3 deaths. More die on the roads every day and yet we still drive around.

Perspective is definitely needed. It's a worry and a concern especially for vulnerable people. But the economy has a dramatic impact on everyone.
