Why are the Germans invincible against C19??

I have close German friends, and my daughter's half German so I already knew they were made of tough stuff! But it's quite incredible as one of the highest infected countries they are reporting zero deaths and far fewer serious cases than anywhere else. Anyone any theories on why this is?

I'm honestly baffled. I know that the organisation over there is second to none, however the infection is spreading there. And it's a very multicultural place, so surely cant be purely genetics. I'm baffled, but hopefully long may it continue for them in any case!

Mother is german and lots of relatives

They have pharmacies like this country has corner shops - and they are total hypochondriacs ! (I mean that fondly)

They will be taking EVERY precaution not to get it and will ALL be behaving in the same consistent manner.

That is my guess on why !

waybird · 08/03/2020 22:05

Or they probably have good immune systems due to drugs/vitamins they take !

Purplewhitelie · 08/03/2020 22:06

They have not published much yet. Watch and wait.

Shopgirl1 · 08/03/2020 22:20

Too early. First cases (apart from original Bavaria cases they stopped) were only the last week of February. The next week will be interesting.
Their currently numbers are also easily within their health systems capacity.

RogueV · 08/03/2020 22:22

Honestly? It’ll be the way the various countries are reporting deaths. I do not believe the SK figures for a minute..

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 08/03/2020 22:22

They might be doing more tests and hence identifying more cases. That would make their death rate look much lower than everybody else’s.

Frazzled2207 · 08/03/2020 22:23

also wondering this - perhaps in Germany it has spread around a relatively healthy group eg young, fit, whereas in Italy it's mostly spread among older people?

forkfun · 08/03/2020 22:27

In Italy the virus was undetected for several weeks in two hospitals. That's what is causing the huge mortality rate. In Germany it's so far 1000 people out if about 90 million, and not in any particular section of the population. There's nothing special about Germany. I say this as a German.

Kokapetl · 08/03/2020 22:33

They do have a far better health system than the UK in terms of staffing and resources.

I say this as someone working in the NHS with a relative working as a doctor in Germany.

tempester28 · 08/03/2020 22:36

They wash their hands very efficiently!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 22:40

I live in Germany

imo it's probably because the current level of cases is well within the spare capacity of the health services

  • and they do have decent spare capacity

Germany has far more critical care beds per 1,000 population than the UK (iirc 3 x as many)
far more ordinary hospital beds
far more doctors, including GPs

All paid for by higher taxes / insurance contributions - and well worth it
Especially in a crisis

We're just hoping the measures to mitigate the spread keep the number of cases manageable for the hospitals

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 22:42

Germany has a lot of old people, a higher % than e.g. SKorea, but not quite as many as Italy

Guineapigbridge · 08/03/2020 22:48

The difference could well be smoking rates? I don't think Germans smoke anywhere near as much as Italians, Iranians and Chinese?
They reckon (the proverbial they) that the difference in death rates between Chinese men and Chinese women was solely down to the fact that males smoke a lot more than women....

Guineapigbridge · 08/03/2020 22:49

Plus, Germans are very strict people. They follow the rules. Italians, less so :D

ArnoldBee · 08/03/2020 22:58

Please dont start talking about Germans being the master race.
Italy seems to be been unable to contain it for whatever reason.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 08/03/2020 23:01

Erm.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 08/03/2020 23:01

Oops.

Please dont start talking about Germans being the master race.

Really? Hmm

LynetteScavo · 08/03/2020 23:05

But Germany has a lower death rate (have they had any deaths?) They either have amazing hospital care or they are reporting deaths differently. Maybe both.

BeardedMum · 08/03/2020 23:05

Better hygiene and more personal space.

LynetteScavo · 08/03/2020 23:06

No one is saying Germans are the master race Hmm If they arw doing with their patients something other countries aren't we need to learn from them. And pretty quick.

CochonDinde · 08/03/2020 23:07

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily apols, but what are you alluding to - must be missing it in my sunday night fatigue!
