Yea, I have also seen discussion of plans to help small businesses particularly, as the most vulnerable of the business community and essential to our overall economy.

The wiki article has good case number tracking for the UK:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_outbreak_in_the_United_Kingdom

There are similar articles for other countries.

The number of confirmed cases in the UK seems to be doubling about every 2.5 days, or rising on average about 40% a day. If they continue rising at this rate then we are about 10 days behind Italy.

Italy started quarantine measures and closed the schools on 22/02/20 when they had 79 cases.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_outbreak_in_Italy

Italy's rate of increase appears to have slowed from the beginning of March to about 26% a day. Obviously this could be because of the different testing regimes but I wonder how much worse their situation would be if they had not implemented any measures.

When is our government going to act?

halcyondays · 09/03/2020 09:03

I’m not sure why people think they’re never going to close schools here, they’ve already said it’s a possibility and other countries have already done it. That it would cause major issues with childcare, including for the children of medical staff, isn’t unique to the UK.

Does anyone know if they are monitoring people who’ve tested positive for Coronavirus and are self isolating at home? Someone said they phoned people at home to check on them when they had swine flu?

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 09:04

The WHO poilicy is to slow it, as China meant it spread and became seeded in other communities spreading within communities.

Flatten the peak.

This is the thing isn't it. It's going to be economics vs health. I think there is going to be very difficult times ahead. And those taking the view of it's mostly going to be older people who suffer, or should stay in are perhaps underestimating the amount of grandparents who look after children in order so that the parents can go out and work

Long time lurker, I just wanted to ask if anyone could help clarify something for me.

I live in Devon so obviously I’m getting a bit concerned but I’m confused by the county breakdowns.

It says 12 in Devon, 6 in Torbay.

Are the 6 people in Torbay included in the 12 in Devon? Or is it supposed to be taken as there are 12 people in Devon and another 6 in Torbay?

I’ve not seen anything where I live that breaks it down further, all I know is some are in Torbay and some in Torquay.

If anyone can clarify this for me I’d really appreciate it!

Exochord · 09/03/2020 09:08

Its a deep lung respiratory disease, but it can migrate to other areas of the body
Any virus can do that. My friend had “just flu” - it migrated to his heart and caused viral myocarditis resulting in a heart transplant. The news yesterday reported a Japanese patient with coronavirus that migrated to his brain and caused meningitis. It’s rare but does happen.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 09:08

The health systems and economies of all countries are under severe threat.

Its a case of managing through it from what I've gleaned so far.

Good programme in R4

Eeyoresstickhouse · 09/03/2020 09:10

empress it is done by local authority not county. So as torbay is it's own authority they are listed separately. So technically you have 18 in devon.

It's the same in bournemouth area. We are in dorset but a unitary authority so Bournemouth have 2 cases but dorset have none.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 09:10

It was a caveat, that its not necessarily contained to deep lung, and in answer to a pp specifically.

I can't caveat everything Confused by putting (the same as other viruses)

Yes they reference the gov.uk site.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 09/03/2020 09:12

Many 'older people' (over 60s) are the leaders in their fields.

Some of those people are in charge of serious organisations which are overseeing nationally vital processes.

Even if the considerations were theoretically purely economic, these people are very valuable 'assets' .

Ageism is rife in our society.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 09/03/2020 09:13

Of course all people are valuable, I'm only talking about how a hard hearted economist might think.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 09/03/2020 09:14

I'm not finding the 46 - 83 quote very reassuring since I just turned 46.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 09:14

From the Times today-

*Officials said that British citizens in Italy wishing to return home would be allowed to catch flights in the regions that remained open, but did not advise on whether they should leave. The Italian airline Alitalia said it would suspend flights to and from Malpensa airport, Milan, from today.

EasyJet said last night that several flights to or from Milan, Venice and other affected destinations would be cancelled today. British Airways said it was not planning to ground flights. Ryanair did not say that it was planning to cancel fights*

Here Dr Nattino says he has patients from 46 to 83 with the younger patients coming in later

Contextually that is slightly different

peridito · 09/03/2020 09:16

Mange I agree with your post above .

What does your user name translate as ?

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 09:16

I mentioned about some people having more 'lung' symptoms on response to the post / link above by Cocodomingo:

Why some people only experience mild symptoms.
www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-03-08/coronavirus-nears-fatal-tipping-point-when-lungs-are-inflamed?in_source=amp_trending_now_1

Quartz2208 · 09/03/2020 09:17

The source isn’t the best but it does make a difference as will translation

Plus just because the elderly are hit hardest doesn’t mean younger people won’t the stats have never shown that

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 09:17

Because that article explains with CV some people just have mild symptoms in the throat and others it goes to the lung

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 09:17

rugbyobserver.co.uk/news/pupil-from-school-in-rugby-diagnosed-with-coronavirus/
Pupil from school in Rugby diagnosed with Coronavirus

"In a letter to parents, the school said the pupil had shown no symptoms after self-isolating for 14 days as a precaution, so returned to school at the end of last week."
Yet they arent closing the school...

Wehttam · 09/03/2020 09:21

Can we now surmise that the 80% that have no remarkable symptoms could be it’s Trojan horse?

Consider this, it allows continuous spread because most people assume is just a cold or flu so you go about your daily activities taking a few extra precautions (realistically a sneeze or cough could escape by accident) and you then pass it on to someone else. Eventually enough passing around of the virus means it will find the 20% where it has devastating effects.

Now the original assumption people present as asymptomatic makes perfect sense doesn’t it? This virus can not have jumped from a fucking bat, of that I am certain.
