@magicrainbowbeans countries like France and Germany had it popping up in various towns, mostly brought in from Italy and other countries. I'd say they are about a week-five days ahead of us (but bear in mind more people will have driven to Italy, not flown). It's worth looking at how numbers of cases have progressed in those countries. They have taken measures but not closed schools yet, I believe.

I'm not suggesting the UK situation isn't bad, because it is (as is the European situation in general), but to assume things here will be radically worse than in the rest of Europe seems unlikely.

Fifflefaffle · 09/03/2020 06:54

@Bearbehind I kind of agree with you. I found this thread useful at first them came off and came back on for a look. Will be leaving it though.
I work in a school so am at the hands of the government. I can't stay out of the way of people and will probably be having to cover someone else's class if they're poorly. Lots of my colleagues seem to be going on holiday (if the government allows) at Easter and we're carrying on with school trips and residentials as usual.
Until the government allows us, we have to carry on as normal in the public sector. Just lots of hand washing!

WaterSheep · 09/03/2020 06:54

we already know there was an exodus from northern Italy before the lockdown came into effect. Why not be proactive and one step ahead and self isolate all those returning from Italy?

Another one here wondering why isolation is still just for those coming from the North. It must be all over Italy now. Confused

CrapTVAddict · 09/03/2020 06:56

@Biohazardsuitcompulsory which hospital in Manchester did the 3rd person die at?

Is anyone else really angry with their MPs and councils for lack of information?
Our local council and Mp confirmed case in Tameside area but refuse to say which town and then MP wrote a Facebook post which has really annoyed me
'Speculation on where the patient lives is inappropriate and unhelpful. I understand people are concerned but there is really no need to avoid a whole area- this is neither medically advisable (you’re more vulnerable without herd resilience) nor economically helpful. Speculation above is inaccurate. '

So now it's not medically advisable to avoid a area that has a confirmed case ???????Confused
Can anyone think of a suitable response?

People are worried in Tameside . The area has been deprived for years with heavy cuts, the hospital doesn't cope at any normal time and mistakes are made and is in the news often. The least they could do is post a town

SansaSnark · 09/03/2020 07:02

@fifflefaffle I sort of agree with you. Some of the scenarios being posted on the thread are wildly unlikely and it is hard when you have to carry on as normal. I'm also a teacher and had to go to a big event yesterday with pupils from lots of schools. I had to take a school trip to Germany just after half term. Having committed to these things, I can't really back out, although I am worried!

@Watersheep I think the travel advice about Italy will have to be updated today. I think there should be travel advice about France and Germany now too. I think it's here you can see the government's political and economic motivation the most. I assume banning travel to these countries or encouraging self isolation will have a negative effect on the UK economy, but I think if we act really decisively now about travel, we still have a strong chance of controlling the spread in the UK.

If we don't and we keep bringing in new cases that will be much harder.

SansaSnark · 09/03/2020 07:05

@crapTVAddict I have literally no idea what your mp is talking about. I think he means herd immunity - which is a vaccination thing. It's like he's saying people should try to get a mild case and recover so they have immunity - but we aren't even 100% sure that gives you immunity. It also goes against government advice on self isolation to say it's OK to come into contact with an infected person.

There probably isn't a need to avoid the whole area but he's phrased that very poorly!

Babyfairy0923 · 09/03/2020 07:06

Does anyone know what time the meeting is today?

Fev11 · 09/03/2020 07:06

Looking at the trend in cases in South Korea and China, which seem to be levelling out at around 125-150 cases per million people (so 0.000125- 0.00015 % infection rate) I’m feeling a lot less worried than a few weeks ago.
The Italy ‘quarantine’ looks to have been very poorly implemented, with flights still operating in and out of the region so they may have higher infection rates but it all still seems a very long way off the domesday scenario of up to 80% infection rates, thank goodness.

bumblingbovine49 · 09/03/2020 07:10

I agree that some of the posts about numbers in the UK are verging on hysterical but I think travel restrictions/ bans are a really good idea for the UK in particular ( as an island) . Our NHS is not great, we don't manufacture much ( including vaccines) . We have some disadvantages in being able to mitigate this virus so we need to extend the delay phase as much as.possible. As an island, maybe travel bans(of some.sort) will be easier to enforce and may have more effect than in countries with land borders

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/03/2020 07:17

I think that debate about whether we have had any deaths from coronavirus yesterday is well and truly put to bed as very wishful unfortunately. Both the BBC and sky news have this morning used the phrase "deaths from coronavirus" and "died of coronavirus".

On the positive side I personally feel a bit reassured about planning and preparation in my local area having spoken to someone extremely senior in the NHS yesterday (medical but in management). There is an awful lot going on behind the scenes.

Bearbehind · 09/03/2020 07:19

Thanks fifflefaffle

I was just reading through the latest posts and noticed this gem which is completely unsubstantiated

I think we have at least a thousand now

Along with talk of how many cases we’d have it it doubles daily

So it seems some are determined to continue to dramatise this situation rather than sticking to facts as the earlier threads tended to

But it’s clear that most people think I’m in the wrong and that I’m a trouble maker or a troll or whatever else people find appropriate to call me, whilst simultaneously stating it’s me that’s rude 🤔

No more ‘derailing’ from me, although it’s a sad state of affairs when trying to get people to stick to facts is considered ‘derailing’

Lynatic · 09/03/2020 07:25

You don't really think the government tracked ever person with it

WaterSheep · 09/03/2020 07:25

Whilst I don't think we're at 1000 now, it was clearly the posters opinion, and could be possible, considering the limits on testing.

HeronLanyon · 09/03/2020 07:28

bear I haven’t read every single post but will say I haven’t thought you have derailed this thread at all. Quite the opposite. There’s so much fake news/supposition floating around generally (not necessarily this thread) that it’s great to have balance. We just need to try to stick to info from experts and indépendant health professionals.

Bearbehind · 09/03/2020 07:29

Which has been exactly my point on this thread - what benefit is there in talking about what could or might happen when it’s only ‘opinion’ and not based on anything factual and is sensationalising the situation

Bearbehind It’s Definitely not unsubstantiated, Professor (can’t remember where from) said we should expect cases to double every two days. just because you haven’t read that bit of the news doesn’t mean it hasn’t been said. And numbers doubling every two or three days is approximately what has been happening so far. One of the reasons we may not see those numbers doubling from now on is because community transmission is hard to track, especially as numbers rise, so very likely we will have many more cases than we have tested for.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 07:33

No update on UK figures for today although it was meant to be updated at 7am according to the site.

Lynatic · 09/03/2020 07:33

The epidemiologist working for the government that a quarter of cases picked up

Furfockssake · 09/03/2020 07:34

None of this ‘unsubstantiated’ all has been said in the news either by the Government or by various experts.

Bearbehind · 09/03/2020 07:35

fur forgive me if I’m not convinced by a quote from an unnamed professor from somewhere

Where else have cases been doubling every day?

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 07:35

Is it not OK to talk about what might happen and discuss that? Surely that helps people feeling anxious...Confused rather than just shutting down discussion. Is it not possible just to all be polite and discuss things

pussycatinboots · 09/03/2020 07:35

Sky News:
EasyJet cancelling "some" flights to northern and other destinations in Italy.
