Agree @alloutoffucks It helps me feel calmer too. I find the denial and head in sand attitudes far more stressful than accepting reality. Discussing and preparing (including emotionally) for possible worst case helps. There's a lot we can't control with this so anything we can stay in control of is very important.

@HelenaDove. I've got one of those balls. It's ok but I find popping bubble wrap is more stress relieving. Everyone's different though.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 00:38

Also alarmed by red's post on NHS shortages - already !
The Uk only has 273 cases
imo, we may get tens of thousands of cases, or worse

I posted on the thread about the lack of deaths in Germany that I thought a big factor is that
the number of cases is still well within the spare capacity of the health services,
so each person is receiving the best possible care

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 00:41

Pp have objected to the "reasonable worst case" public health estimate of 60-80% infected,
but that does suggest millions of cases may be possible

It’s no secret that stress is detrimental to health, and it can make you more susceptible to viral infections. Research shows that chronic stress increases the chance of developing an infection after exposure to a pathogen

Interesting. I was under a lot of stress in early 2008

Ooh I luvs bubble wrap

I can't sleep now. Just one of my random bouts of insomnia. I headed onto the active threads board and found this gem if anyone would like a laugh:

There's a case for too little too (stress) being an issue.

Optimum stress levels, and raised for action is normal

I think maybe 5- 10 years ago malnourishment was uncommon in the UK

@helenadove

Not sure if this is an explanation, but I know that sometimes when you get I'll, what you feel, your symptoms, aren't the effects of the illness on your body, it is your body's reaction to the illness. Sometimes if you have a stronger immune system, then you feel much worse symptoms than someone who has a lesser immune system. I know that when I was ill during chemo, my only symptoms were raised temp and being weak. I had none of the normal symptoms you would have when you are ill.

Newjez · 09/03/2020 02:10

@Lynatic
They are predicting lots of locust swarms this year in Africa and Pakistan I have read in the papers. This could lead to a lot of vulnerable hungry people to be hit by cv19.

HeIenaDove · 09/03/2020 02:16

@Newjez Thats really interesting. Thanks for that post

Hope you are better now Thanks

Hi everyone! For those of you prepared for a lockdown or even partial self isolation of family members, how will you cop with more than one child? I have a DSS 10 and DD only 3 months old. DSS has been somewhere he could potentially have been infected and we are to watch for symptoms and isolate if required.

There us very little known on how babies are affected and I'm not sure what to do - do I effectively quarantine him in his room, do I take the risk of him infecting DD or do I insist he stay at his mums? I don't think option three is viable because we have him 50/50 and when would he then come back? The risk is likely always there if the virus is now in our town. Similarly I must protect DD.

DSS hygiene is really poor too and I think will slip unless we are watching him constantly with hand washing etc. so I don't trust him to reduce the risk himself. I also don't want to make him feel uncomfortable - he is an emotionally much younger child with a number of emotional needs and that won't help him settle.

Help! Any ideas welcome.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 04:58

My dentist called to say hygienist and check up cancelled this week to rebook. Also swimming pool cancelled class on Friday. Unsure if any related to this. Hoping more things are not cancelled this week. About the person saying flu just as bad mentioned few posts back well it seems it can vary year to year 2018 had a very bad strain and higher mortality rates.around 2percent

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/03/2020 05:00

Hmmm we had our swimming lesson cancelled on Saturday. Which has happened before, so I'd assumed a poo incident. But a huge office had closed for deep cleaning next door so I wonder if it was related.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/03/2020 05:07

I can't sleep; thinking about impact if today's decision.

I'm also going to have to explore changing childcare options as the in-laws have one of mine on one work day. Not sure how easy it will be though.

magicrainbowbeans · 09/03/2020 05:10

Are we around 300 cases by 9am today.. and roughly doubling each day, and the incubation period is 14 days.. If it doubles every day for a week unchecked we would have 38,400 cases by next Sunday and nearly 5 million after 14 days. (that is not hysteria that is maths). Which has not happened in Italy. So it slows.. Due to their lockdown? The other version of this being Wuhan where is was much worse before lockdown? Are those figures wrong for any reason, is there any logical reason why it wouldn't keep doubling, without government intervention?

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/03/2020 05:20

I suppose 2 weeks ago when first community transmission happened we weren't all going mad washing hands etc. That could have impact.

However, the fact that it looks like you can transmit before you're ill is the factor that may tip the balance of decisions.

Horehound · 09/03/2020 05:22

Why wouldn't there be government intervention @magicrainbowbeans ,??

Lynatic · 09/03/2020 05:22

It's not doubling ever day is it
