There are plenty of NHS staff on here one of whom is specifically involved in emergency planning who have said they find it useful.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 21:51

I will look at another source and see if it's worded differently jumped

Jumpedintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 21:51

Of course the elderly are going to be worried, its their age group that's particularly susceptible and that's been shown from the China to Italy.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 21:52

think the role out of the new NEWS 2 system has probably helped too, as it equips everyone in a health role to recognise the danger signs of a deteriorating patient.

Staff shortages have a massively detrimental effect on its usefulness though.

RE CAP and HAP rates as a comparison - would this not only apply to the cases that are viral (which isn't always known)?

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 21:52

The committee with chris whitty link is already in all the OPs since it was broadcast. Wink

On Italian TV we haven't seen any hospital with Intensive Care being carried out in corridors (yet) Obviously there is a lot of concern that it might happen- in some of the massive yet badly run hospitals (Milan, Rome and Naples are notorious and often have shock docs and hidden camera exposes) patients often sleep in the corridors on gurneys for days.
It's the Humanitas run hospital upthread I mean- there's a private hospital and a private university with the same name. The doctors who wrote the letter "seen by the Independent" are teachers at the university.

SistemaAddict · 08/03/2020 21:53

I have friends who came back from Italy just before the cut off date and are not self isolating. The original advice said 19th February but now it's the past 14 days. Is it still a 14 day incubation period? I can't remember if that was a definite or presumed.

its their age group that's particularly susceptible and that's been shown from the China to Italy.

Of course they are one of the most high risk groups, my point was - the media etc whipping it up into a frenzy does not help alleviate that anxiety.

thesunwillout · 08/03/2020 21:56

We do have alot of older people in Devon, but the rumours and concerns have been concentrated on our local school and the half term Italy skiing trips.
I'd like to know who the other infected people are, we know of Churston Ferrers school.
It would be of benefit to know if our older residents are mainly affected, then we could be mindful, and be informed.
Those affected could have direct links to skiing trips, maybe not.

@BigChocFrenzy One was told not to start - eldery and other issues and I think it was a case of buying a short amount of time. (Family friend)

Other is mid course. I don't know enough detail but it was something to do with CV.

I assumed this was commonly happening so didn't dig for more details.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 21:58

This is what it says on the guardian live feed jumped
About 8pm the Department of Health advice as to who should self-isolate for 14 days on their return was updated to include all those who had been to the locked-down area, rather than just the original 11 affected towns.

So the DOH must have released something this evening.

Allaboutthatbass · 08/03/2020 21:58

thanks @usernameishistory - couldn’t spot it for some reason.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 21:58

Guardian Live:

"A healthcare worker at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT) has tested positive for coronavirus.

The surgical high dependency unit, where the person worked a single nightshift on Friday, has been temporarily closed to new admissions as a result.

The worker is self-isolating at home."

YoursTunbridgeWells · 08/03/2020 21:59

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress Thank you. Is there a link for that?

HebeMumsnet · 08/03/2020 22:00

Evening, everyone. We're getting rather a lot of reports about this thread. We don't want to have to zap entire threads but if this turns into a bunfight, we may have to.

Could everyone just have a look at the talk guidelines again and keep posts civil? We understand feelings run high and that people are anxious, and that not everyone will feel the same way but we think it's possible to disagree without being rude.

Thanks.

picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2020 22:01

@usernameishistory

Would a solution be to add an explanation to the thread title? As clear as the 'positive mental health' Coronavirus thread- maybe 'Worried about Coronavirus (number)- full discussion/not for the nervous'.
I'm sure you'll have a better way of describing it.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 22:01

So do you only get hospitalised if you become quite unwell BigChoc? I wonder how they enforce the isolation?

Bessica1970 · 08/03/2020 22:01

One good news story for those worried about taking biological meds to suppress their immune system - it seems that several of them are being used as treatments for the worst effects of CV:

I’m on adalimumab / Humira but others are being looked at too!

Pebble21uk · 08/03/2020 22:02

the sunwillout Devon has released news of 5 out of the 6 people confirmed in Torbay - 1. Churston Ferrers pupil 2.Adult relative of Churston Ferrers pupil. 3. Churston Ferrers church congregation member (who partook of Holy Communion before showing symptoms) and 4&5. I believe to be 2 people who worked with Number 2 at a doctor's surgery in Torquay.
Devon Live website is quite a good source of information.

@ofwarren not everyone who is confirmed to have it has to go to hospital, and no they don't enforce it as in wait outside your house and check you don't go out, you would hope people would adhere to it but that's probably quite optimistic.

Rocketmam · 08/03/2020 22:05

Sounds like a good idea, should help stop the derailing/whoever is reporting the thread.
