and have seen people sharing hysterical unsubstantiated nonsense being corrected very quickly 🤷‍♀️

Yes, and I have agreed, that WAS happening, and these threads WERE very balanced, I thought. Until the last few seemed to be joined by some posters quoting dodgy sources/ absolute bollocks completely unchallenged. Then when some objected to that, they were pounced on and accused of trolling.

Carlislemumof4 · 08/03/2020 21:37

If I have anxiety, it is not as a result of the discussion in this thread it is about the disconnect between what we are told by government/WHO i.e. serious threat, not a drill, pull out all stops- and what is happening i.e. wash your hands, cross your fingers and sing Que Sera

This.

This thread series along with the Guardian live blog and my local online newspaper have been so informative and helped me process and prepare mentally and practically for supporting my family through the coming months. Knowing there are COVID-19 diagnoses in my area confirms what I thought must be the case considering the info we have about how the virus spreads and how infectious it is. It's already all over the country. That knowledge gives me greater clarity and confidence in making decisions for my children.

Links such as the Independent article with the letter from Italian doctors detailing the complications they're dealing with have given some much needed answers to questions I've wanted to ask when there's been such a discrepancy between watching other government's responses and hearing 'it'll be no worse than a cold for most of you' from our own.

Third man of 60 has died... Pre existing health problems.

oneteen · 08/03/2020 21:39

@peridito Thank you ...so easy to lose posts when the thread is so active...the UK testing figures are pretty good - or certainly better than I expected compared to other countries.

Jumpedintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 21:40

Dr M thank you

HotPenguin · 08/03/2020 21:40

@Jumpingintotheabyss I wonder if sleeve of coat could be worse though, as you don't wash your coat very often. Especially if you then sneeze into your elbow while wearing said coat!

Tissue could work, but not on the London underground, as I think I would be at more risk of breaking my neck falling over when I lose my grip than from Corona virus.

hoovermyrug · 08/03/2020 21:41

@Alwayscheerful I feel the same. People are treating me like a nut. I find it so patronising and speaks volumes about their need to maintain denial about anything happening that might burst their little bubble. Do what you must do but don't judge me!

HairyFloppins · 08/03/2020 21:41

So sad for the man that died. Only in their 60's.

Jumpedintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 21:41

Hot, I mostly have washable cheap coats or thin cardigans.

I don't live in London however and wouldn't need to do this everyday.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 21:42

Tunbridgewells "I know of 2 people now who have been told their chemo has been cancelled - one mid course."

Do you know the reason - that sounds extraordinary, unless it was due to their own health issues.

I am assuming - barring a complete collapse of the NHS or healthy system in any country - that all essential treatment would continue as normal

it would just be elective surgery that might be postponed if they need the beds or the staff
So people waiting for hip or knee replacements may have some months delays

Rocketmam · 08/03/2020 21:42

Just because you lack the capacity to have any compassion for 'unseen others' does not mean other people's is fake.

Earlier on these threads at least two people said they were in tears at the thought of all they were reading. You may not give a shit about that, but some do. But you crack own with your little hobby why don't you. Pathetic.

Are you personally going to vet the entire internet to make sure nobody reads anything that might upset them? You've got a long night (millennia) ahead of you if so.

This is a thread in the coronavirus topic. Titled as 'worried about coronavirus'.

I have plenty of empathy for people with anxiety and mh problems. They are adults who can clearly see what the discussion contained in this thread will be by simply reading the title.

Which appears to be more than you and your furry friend are capable of.

frumpety · 08/03/2020 21:42

I think it would be good to look at rates of CAP and HAP prior to this virus. That is your comparison and I would warn you now the death rate is possibly higher than you imagined. We are much better at diagnosing and treating than we were , but the rate of death is still pretty high for obvious reasons , such as age and co-morbidity. I think the role out of the new NEWS 2 system has probably helped too, as it equips everyone in a health role to recognise the danger signs of a deteriorating patient.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/03/2020 21:42

I keep saying but people keep not noticing!

The hospital in Italy linked to above (and in the other thread) is a small, private hospital not usually used for acute emergencies. It's a hospital which has been criticised for quality of care standards. It's not the kind of hospital that ever would have enough ICU beds for a potential emergency. That it hasn't, isn't a shock, it's to be expected from a small private hospital where people tend to go and get their piles done!

What is ACTUALLY being said (on every TV chsnnel's special as I type) is that if the situation continues at the present rate, then PROBABLY bed spaces will become scarce. HOWEVER it is believed that, if the Currey measures are adhered to, then there should be a significant drop in cases being hospitalised and people testing positive within the next 15 days.

(Rai news @ 8pm this evening)

georgeggg · 08/03/2020 21:43

Southampton Hospital in Hampshire has a confirmed case.

A healthcare professional who worked a single nightshift in our surgical high dependency unit on Friday, 6 March has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). They are now isolated at home.
The small number of patients and staff who came into close contact with this individual have been informed and will be appropriately isolated.
The surgical high dependency unit is temporarily closed to new admissions. Any patient affected by the temporary closure will be contacted directly.
The Trust is following Public Health England and NHS guidance in respect of the virus and all other services are operating normally.
Patients and staff should continue to attend appointments normally and come into work unless advised not to. Information for the public is available at nhs.ukk_. After reviewing the advice, if someone meets the criteria they should visit the NHS 111 online service or call 111.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/03/2020 21:43

Currey? Current obvs!

Bessica1970 · 08/03/2020 21:45

Ofwarren - do you think that means people who have already returned from Northern Italy too? I have a work colleague who came back from Milan last weekend, but has been in work. That article suggests she should self isolate!

Jumpedintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 21:45

book

The thread is moving so fast, is this the lombardy hospital with intensive care in corridors now?

That is worth pointing out.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 21:46

the poor buggers on the front line of the NHS that have to deal with people who you who like who have wound others up to the hilt

Thank you, good to know one person has considered this!

It's been a bloody nightmare tbh, so many people jamming up the 111/ 999 services convinced they have/ need testing for it that people with genuine illnesses are not getting through. The ones I find most vulnerable to panicking and believing everything they read are the very elderly, and it is so upsetting to see.

WorriedAcademic · 08/03/2020 21:46

Wow, vunerable patients in a hdu ward exposed to the virus. Not good at all.

There’s a lot of HCPs who seem to have it. So either a lot of doctors and nurses have been skiing in Italy at half term or there’s a lot of community transmission going on.

AvocadoOwl · 08/03/2020 21:47

^ Whose quote was this originally? It's utterly brilliant GrinGrinGrin

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 21:47

Guessing it just means from now on Bessica I'm not certain.

Jumpedintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 21:49

That link says 'past 14 days'

A typo?

I've also had a colleague pass through Milan?

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 21:50

CrunchyCarrot thank you! (I've only just caught up)

I can't keeping repeating responses to any that come on the thread to tell us how unhelpful they are to them.

Just so you know. I won't be replying again as its wasting time.

I'm sorry for that because I've tried to understand and explain as have others. But it does seem futile now.
