Yes, I agree.

The government seem so desperate to keep the economy going, yet talk about closing down Westminster! Surely if they are really serious about social distancing, they need to talk about closing schools rather than just protecting themselves while they let it spread!

@tangledyarn
Have you checked out the link in the OP/first posts? Specialist asthma advice

From what I've read around it, you are better upping inhaled syeriods than starting oral, no.medic, but less impact.on your immune system.

It's a line to draw isn't it, having a short sharp hig of oral steroids is going to make a huge difference to your asthma and overall health, and have little impact on immunity overall? Check with the specialists is best I think.

MotherOfDragonite. That link is in the OP/first posts too.

Why can't we be given the choice?
From the mumsnet and rl snap shot, many will want to carry on working.

Why can't those at least with dependants or other issues be allowed to take dc out of school without penalty.

I feel like I'm pincered in the most awful trap. All my instincts are crying out to keep dc off school...
One more week may.... Be OK... Maybe even two?

But no more please!

Or even just give us choices around Easter hols?
Those that want too take the extra weeks....

Tell school and work and they can stay open and plan accordingly!!

I am getting really annoyed with people in real life acting like I am overreacting when Italy are shutting down the whole of Lombardy and they have so many critical cases. We need to act sooner than Italy did to slow this down but it doesn’t look like we will do. People here still think it won’t happen here, it’s mind boggling, what do they think we have that Italy don’t?

tryingtoprep · 08/03/2020 00:22

Agree too. Some easy measures haven't been implemented that could still slow the spread. Wfh for all who can, for example.

The lack of action. I don't wish Boris dead but I hope the 3 wise men protocol doesn't distinguish between occupations. It's meant to be based on likelihood of survival, age, preexisting health. I don't want to see any exceptions for government ministers. They chose to ignore warnings from China, Italy, the WHO. I wish the media would at least challenge the plans to close parliament whilst telling Joe public to go on as normal.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 00:23

Exactly Ciwi
Why do they think it won't happen here?
What do they think we are doing to stop it happening here? As far as I can see, we aren't doing anything to prevent that.

HeIenaDove · 08/03/2020 00:23

@ofwarren Thanks.

tangledyarn · 08/03/2020 00:23

Thanks @usernameishistory Yeah have done that today, so hopefully that will do the trick, I'd really rather not take oral steroids at the moment..I want as much immune system as I can get :) I only had a course for something else a few weeks ago plus steroid injections so I could do without anymore in my system. Covid19 aside I always end up covered in cold sores!

Normalcy Bias will end up costing the well being and lives or many people over the coming months. People are so swept up in their worlds of social media, instagram filters, take out coffees, lip fillers, football fandom, Audi finance that when danger is dead ahead (pardon the pun) many dismiss it because it goes against the grain of their daily lives.

I’m personally almost numb with shock and have been under what can only be described as a fucking big black cloud for the last month and a half since this became the huge issue it is today. I hope more than anything it all blows over and we can all go back to our lives but the chances of that are pretty much zilch right now.

NemophilistRebel · 08/03/2020 00:25

Would any of you be concerned if you were pregnant and working in an office close with people who are doing international travel to both Italy and America on a regular basis?

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 00:27

I would be if I was still going in.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 00:28

I don't blame Boris, he or any pm has to listen to advice he is given.

But the buck in the eyes of the public remains with him. His advisors maybe saying, hang on, it would be very brave to go agaisnt that, say close now, and gamble with people's lives.

I IN many ways I love our NHS but at the same time I loathe it.
. It's bloated, sloppy and there is mo control.
Even on here a staff member posted about stealing issues and from other staff members.
Germanys health care system is supposed to be shit hot and no deaths there yet.. Maybe the silver lining of this macabre chaos will be our NHS crumbles so much it is forces a total over haul.
We seem frightened to critise it.
I'm sorry I have zero confidence in it right now.

Awkward1 · 08/03/2020 00:28

It's being suppressed here.
I haven't seen the advice to stay 1m away here.
That would jolt people
As how could you do that. Trains work, cinema, crufts
We need stop non essential travel.
I honestly think school teachers will be suing the schools for poor risk assessments as will the parents.
The info is clearly there they need to use it. Delay is not enough we need to aim to eradicate.

It's scary to think even if I don't go anywhere now for 3w we could still get it and then once one person has it the wait to see the next.
They haven't really been saying if family members in uk also test positive. China was 10% but they wear masks...

HeIenaDove · 08/03/2020 00:31

@tangledyarn Sorry if i came across if i was having a go. It wasnt meant that way Thanks

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 00:31

@NemophilistRebel

What would be your risks in going? Please think about your bodily autonomy, and what you can do to keep yourself free of illness.

Personally, from experience, festivals are breeding grounds for very nasty bugs, especially where bands play inside tents and sweaty bug ridden condensation builds up on the roof and drops down to all below! Plus the proximity of the crowds. It isn't the healthiest at the best of times.

You take your decisions for you, if its not taken out of your hands and shut down that is.

OP posts:
NemophilistRebel · 08/03/2020 00:34

@usernameishistory luckily I am not planning on going, but some friends are and I worry for them

I am pregnant so not risking anything like large crowds at the moment

Although I can’t help but go to doctors and hospitals for my check ups and scans.

I am concerned for working in such close contact with people regularly travelling internationally to Italy and USA though.
I have 6 weeks to go before maternity leave starts so hoping I can keep it at bay until then but I have next door colleague returning from Italy beginning of Easter and another returning from USA in 2 weeks Confused

tangledyarn · 08/03/2020 00:35

@helenadove No worries, everyone is worried, am sorry if you felt I was minimising people genuinely needing hospital care, it really wasnt intended that way xxFlowers

IntergalacticSuperstar · 08/03/2020 00:35

I'm worried about my DP's - both in their early seventies, both with heart problems. To be honest I think an illness like the flu could carry DM off Sad I've made the decision to keep DS away from them until numbers start slowing down.

With the rest of us we're just avoiding unnecessary risk. DD is KPop mad and I've had to ask her to stop buying things from Korean sites for now because our postman looked appalled the two times something arrived last month! I'm walking to work and back instead of 15 minutes on the bus, and seeing friends in our homes instead of in public.

The only things I'm undecided on are the dentist and optician appointments for this month. They're just check ups so I thought I might postpone, I don't know if that's a bit OTT though...

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 00:36

Wehttam

There is only so much each of us can do.

Like staying out of close proximity and maintaining hygiene, it's all we can have control over.

Interesting to read the details of the Critical Care intensivists from Lombardy and the local response to that letter. In the hospital I work at the CC unit is one of the best prepared areas and there's certainly not a sense of panic/impending doom. We are less concerned about the supply of doctors as we will be cancelling elective activity so will effectively draft in all the anaesthetists to support HDU/ICU essentially trebling out capacity. Also we have a young team so less at risk of serious illness if they catch the virus, and (unsurprisingly) mostly men who (in most cases) won't be taking on the primary childcare duties if schools close/children are ill. Although the service is confident we can increase capacity of beds by perhaps 150% there are concerns around nursing staff numbers and skill mix, also mostly women so more likely to be hit by childcare issues. After that increase we will be stuck for equipment, space, and possibly drugs. Maintaining segregation of covid +ive and -ive patients will be a challenge, especially in the early days. Later on it won't matter so much. Once all the beds are full it seems highly likely that we will have to make some difficult decisions and will certainly involve increasing the acuity threshold for patients requiring critical care. Previous ITU patients will be deemed wardable, previous general inpatients may be cared for in temporary wards, or in primary care.
