"The head of the Lombardy's intensive care crisis unit says the health system is on the brink of collapse, intensive care being set up in hallways. By March 26 they predict 18,000 cases in Lombardy, of which 3,000 will need intensive care".

@marmite92 Hand sanitiser is sold out near me and no doubt in lots of other areas too.

Don’t panic though. Suggestions: wear gloves on your bus journeys. Sit (if you can sit) as far away as possible from anyone coughing or sneezing. If the bus is a double decker, you may find sick people less likely to have gone up there! Wash your hands well with soap when you get to your destination. Wash your gloves often.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 00:02

crispy I’m joining you in the scared club. Those cases have freaked me out and now I feel like I have a sore throat come on as I was reading. 😷

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 00:02

@Dusty01 no, just fact

Awkward1 · 08/03/2020 00:03

If you haven't done a will. Do you think the will itself plus a video reading it might be adhered to??

HeIenaDove · 08/03/2020 00:03

@Dusty01

No it's accurate, I posted a link to the letter in a previous thread yesterday. It's here: mailchi.mp/esicm/the-future-of-haemodynamic-monitoring-first-webinar-of-the-year-1009715

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 00:05

No Dusty sadly the overwhelmed ICU in hospitals has been one of the main concerns all along. It can clog up beds with severe and critical patients for weeks at a time. This is the message some of us have been warning of for a while.

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 00:05

@fullofteandneedstopee
I would make an urgent appeal to your MP about this, and do report back as others will be affected like this too.

Also suggest looking at your own energy suppliers' websites to see what they are recommending.

A U.S Marine assigned to Fort Belvoir, VA tested positive today for COVID-19 and is currently being treated at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. The Marine recently returned from overseas where he was on official business. Secretary Esper and the White House have been briefed.

SnoozyLou · 08/03/2020 00:07

@springflorals I can't use fairy liquid as it makes my hands crack. Neutrogena hand cream is brilliant though, the regular one in a blue and white bottle.

cocodomingo · 08/03/2020 00:09

@dusty01 that isnt scaremongering, that's terrifying but very useful for operational NHS managers and clinical directors to prepare for what will massively stretch capacity and efficiency.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 00:10

Awkward, probably not, need proper will!!

Can get them at wh Smith.

Buttermilk I'm almost speechless. That combined with the post from Liz on twitter re hospital over load.

Shock

What are we waiting for.

Awkward1 · 08/03/2020 00:10

Thing is how do they know There is a bulk of people not getting it. We have blamed lack of isolation for what happened in cruise ships etc. They need to test the families of patients to check they are immune.

It's taken a while for that Italy to reach the media.

tryingtoprep · 08/03/2020 00:10

It's reporting facts so I wouldn't say it's scaremongering. People reading it have two choices. Dismiss as scaremongering and stay in denial, or accept the seriousness of the situation and do all they can to prepare. Those making the important decisions, government ministers, Whitty, etc should heed the warning. Calmly prepare rather than downplay and suffer the consequences later.

Younger patients with no underlying conditions requiring ICU. Perhaps this is the second more aggressive strain we've heard of?

Dusty01 · 08/03/2020 00:10

How are people missing the hugeness of this?

No one around me is worried at all. That's why I keep moving from petrified (when I read anything about the virus) to feeling like it won't touch me (when I go out and about).

I don't think the media is amplifying this. Or am I wrong? It feels to me the other way round.

Articles like the one I posted above are terrifying - but as you say they are based on fact. It's the facts that are terrifying and the facts are not reaching enough people.

Why is that?

tangledyarn · 08/03/2020 00:10

Am adding my voice to the aveeno hand cream lovers..its the best. I've been in bed for 2 days with a fluey thing, temp, sore throat and slight cough, no travel and no contacts so no point trying to get tested and i'm sure it's just another winterey virus. Just slightly worried I might need to see gp as I'm asthmatic and am quite wheezy. Hopefully they can just prescribe some steroids over the phone if needed but I'll see how I am tommorow.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 00:11

Why can't some thing like... We want to curtail this but many will want to carry I'm, so those who's wish to stop work and take dc out of school, will be able to do for x weeks without penalty, written in law!!

buttermilkwaffles · 08/03/2020 00:11

Has also been posted on the ESICM website: www.esicm.org/covid-19-update-from-our-colleagues-in-northern-italy/

Please, please think about signing the petition to ask the government to consider closing schools: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300403

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 00:13

It's a phenomenon called normalcy bias @Dusty01
Read this link about it: medium.com/@UKSurvivalGuide/what-is-normalcy-bias-a10ccc0e0dee

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 00:14

The Lombardy situation is what I find very worrying, I mean living life is always full of risks, of accidents, of congenital issues, of diseases, of pollutant harms, but we rely on proper contingency planning from our health infrastructures to have access to the best medical intervention.

At the moment, people are absolutely being denied access to desperately required medical attention.

The sense I get is that earlier intervention brings greater rates of success.

We dont have early intervention Hmm at all, FFS!

Wrt school closures I seriously wonder about four day weekends and three day weeks so that schools can be thoroughly cleansed over each weekend to knock back viral load on occupants.

@Dusty01 I feel similarly. I think people are just not able to cope with the information, it is too much for them. My uncle says it's no worse than the flu and he's immune compromised following cancer he is not a stupid man and would be well able to look at the statistics and understand them if he wants to. Clearly, on some level, he is just not ready to consciously acknowledge the danger.
