Ooh a day off - I'm not sure my school would appreciate it - we've already got 3 teachers self isolating!

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 22:46

Op thanks so much for the new thread and all those links!

Re the other thread.. I'm glad some people arnt getting it. Its a good balance. We need people to shrug things off. It's those people who will keep the things going after all.

Defenbaker · 07/03/2020 22:47

@QueenofmyPrinces He's probably just got a nasty cold, but it's best to keep your distance anyway - no point in catching a horrid cold if you can avoid it. I'm sure you know the drill - keep your distance, get him to be scrupulous about using tissues when he coughs and sneezes, all the usual common sense stuff that can reduce yiur risk of catching it. Maybe wipe door handles and taps with anti vac now and then.

Has your DH been abroad recently, or been in close contact with people who have? If not, it's probably not Corona, so try not to worry. If he has, then a call to 111 would be a good idea.

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 22:47

Loads have recommended aveeno (eczema cream isnt it?). Also when all else fails and eczema is bad I use just cold pressed hemp oil, it.stinks, but its very highly tolerateston very sore eczema, try putting gloves on overnight with it too.

WhyNotMe40
Its important when you need to keep on top of things, to take a day off to have an essential break, it will keep you and your family going longer, this is a marathon not a sprint.

EnidBlyton · 07/03/2020 22:50

but there is now community spreading, so the abroad question is irrelevant

Dusty01 · 07/03/2020 22:51

Can anyone explain why numbers infected are slowing down now in China?

There must be millions who haven't yet had the disease.

Why doesn't the virus keep going until there's none left to infect anymore?

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 22:51

My hands started to flake on Friday after all the washing and gel at work!
I've stayed in today and not washed and gelled of course and doused them with moisturiser.

They look much better.

Op I adore garlic but I speak to people all day close up, I felt it wasn't fair but I'm going to eat copious amounts again.

But on the other hand maybe it will help with social distancing? Grin

SistemaAddict · 07/03/2020 22:51

Evening all. Just checking in on the new thread, thanks OP.

I have the dilemma of a soft play party tomorrow. The whole class from school is going. I figure they've been together all week at school anyway so not much point keeping dc at home and missing it.

I made soup today (lentil, carrot and celery), and homemade bread. Making soup and baking bread always make me feel better psychologically and of course it's good healthy food too. We all love soup which is a bonus as it's low cost and healthy. I might make some more tomorrow and freeze it on individual portions.

I can't remember if I've mentioned it on this thread but for those who would like advice on prepping then there's several threads on this. The Brexit Cupboard ones are really useful and there's a specific CV preppers thread I think. I've found prepping helps my anxiety and due to having a brexit stash, I am well stocked for any kind of event that restricts my ability to get to the shops or get deliveries so: illness, bad weather, lack of money, supply issues, no deal brexit. I got my mum stashing too about a year ago so she's got a good supply in if she should need it. This reassures us both as she's 80, I don't drive and can't get to her easily, especially if the weather is bad as it's bloody hilly round here and if it snows I'd need skis (which I haven't got). I know that if she had to self isolate for a fortnight she'd be bored but she'd not go hungry. I recommend to everyone to have a small supply of extras in if they can, whatever you can afford that you know you'll use.

He, our two sons and my FIL went to Malta just over three weeks ago - they came back home 14 days ago.

My oldest son had a temperature last week and kept saying his throat hurt but it only lasted 36-48 hours.

My youngest son has been fine.

My FIL spent about 3 days in bed (about a week ago) because he felt really unwell - though he didn’t specify that it was cough/cold symptoms though. I didn’t even realise he’d been ill until he dropped it into conversation yesterday.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 07/03/2020 22:54

@NotJustACigar its called normalcy bias.

SistemaAddict · 07/03/2020 22:56

@springflorals I have the same problem with dry, itchy hands if I wash them too much. Winter strips them raw too. I recommend Aveeno hand cream. The blue one. Asda sells it at a good price. It's the only one that seems to work and doesn't leave my hands feeling greasy or unpleasant in any way. Slather it on at night then out on cotton gloves or a pair of socks to help it absorb.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 22:57

"We need people to shrug things off. It's those people who will keep the things going after all."

imo, they are more likely to panic when SHTF
because they won't have planned for it and it'll be a shock when it becomes real.

Denial is not a good way to tackle a crisis

Holy Church of Greece and medics arguing over holy communion?

Glittercandle · 07/03/2020 22:58

I went to the theatre in London today and it was a full house. There were also a lot of people around Covent Garden, many tourists. China town was quieter than usual.
I saw a few people wearing masks - one mask wearing lady was trying not to touch anything in the tube train and fell over when the train stopped - I wonder if there are going to be more ‘hygiene’ related accidents where people aren’t holding on to rails etc!

NotJustACigar · 07/03/2020 22:59

I know, YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus. I just thought they'd be over it by now but instead it seems like if anything it's getting worse. People I know in real life, really intelligent people from work who are all scientists and engineers, are the same Sad.

MinkowskisButterfly · 07/03/2020 23:00

Thanks for new thread, following though not really posting , but still appreciate them.

@QueenofmyPrinces Firstly i really hope your husband is better soon Flowers

Secondly, I think it is quite easy to slip over from rational to panic. I've not been blase about it, I'm taking sensible precautions without being extreme but we are due to visit my mum tomorrow yet today she has been to a football match in a stadium with my uncle (we are nw England, an hour from the nearest confirmed cases, so not particularly close). I am itching to cancel as I dont my children nor me (asthmatic) to catch cv, logically I know the risk is minimal and until this point I've been going about normal life with just a couple of weeks of food ahead and a bottle of dettol hand sanitizer as my 5yr old doesn't understand not to touch face after touching everything around her when out an about (I have only just managed to stop her trying to lick everything - she has sn).l, but I am illogically feeling unsettled about visiting my mum (64 so not old).

Cheeseismylife · 07/03/2020 23:00

Re cracky hands. Mine are terrible most of the winter - but I also have raynauds so maybe poor circulation does not help. I like the body shop hemp hand protector, or (money no object) occitane shea handcream. Also using sls free handsoap helps too. No idea whether the sls helps to kill the coronabugz or not tho.

FlamingoAndJohn · 07/03/2020 23:00

I also recommend Aveeno. My hands get dreadfully dry and cracked. Get it from Savers as it’s much cheaper there.

I’ve got a cold coming on. I’ve tried to kill it with frozen vodka. We will see.

mac12 · 07/03/2020 23:01

Latest research on transmission - children as likely to get it as adults but in milder form. Needs to be included in analysis of transmission & supportive of school closures (link to the paper in the WHO tweet, which directly tagged Prof Whitty- hope he & his boss pay attention) twitter.com/doctorsoumya/status/1236378362886660096?s=21

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 23:02

Thanks for the new thread.
The numbers coming out of Italy are really scary.
It's looking like there is going to be a huge lockdown situation in the north tomorrow.

StrawberryJam200 · 07/03/2020 23:02

Get your babies’ (old?) Sudocrem out ladies/gents, that’s really helped my hands in the last few days!
