  • Can anyone explain why numbers infected are slowing down now in China?

There must be millions who haven't yet had the disease.

Why doesn't the virus keep going until there's none left to infect anymore?*

There are a lot of places on total isolation. There are probably houses where everyone has had it and houses where no one has had it but it can't spread any further at present because of lack of contact.

The test will be whether or not there's a sudden resurgence once the isolation stops. This will tell us whether it's possible to get reinfected or whether you develop immunity, among other things

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 23:03

@Dusty01
Numbers are slowing in China due to containment measures which have included the following:
Schools closed
Extension of national holiday
Strict quarantine measures
Restaurants, pools, gyms, cinemas etc all closed
Movement restrictions between cities and also in cities
Temp checks everywhere
Compulsory mask wearing
Strict penalties for not complying with regulations.
In summary, nothing is open so you stay at home and only really have contact with people who live with you. Therefore if you are ill it is easy to trace your contacts.
The next step for China is to relax controls whilst maintaining the decrease in numbers.

The first Argentina death had travelled to Paris which has not previously been mentioned much as a source.

According to hospital sources, the virus was detected once the patient had died. He had been hospitalized for more than five days and had other health complications: he suffered from diabetes, hypertension, chronic bronchitis and kidney failure.

Seemed like a pretty ill man already so good the hospital did proper investigations but he has likely infected several health care workers before he died.

It's like Italy, Washington State, Milton Keynes repeating itself once more in that missed cases are in hospital potentially passing it on before being diagnosed. This virus is a bastard.

Thanks for the new thread and thank you @Quartz2208 for the natural antivirals list. Oregano oil, and basil - which is easy to grow at home. Also peppermint, and licorice for coughs.

@NotJustACigar I think some of the I'm Not Worried At All lot are actually very worried but hope if they say it's no big deal often enough it will go away. If only!

@QueenofmyPrinces I wish your husband well.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 23:05

Italy

Confirmed Recovered Death Recovery Rate Death Rate
4636 523 197 11.28% 4.25%

The recovery rate should rise massively as the weeks go by

Hopefully that alarming death rate will also fall later, as iirc the early cases were in homes for the elderly

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 23:05

Yes!

Lots of garlic = natural social distancing Grin

If you can smell garlic on someone you are too close anyway in my book! So tell them to back right off Grin

I've been using diprobase on my hands. It's an eczema cream so you may have to ask the pharmacy for it over the counter.

Dusty01 · 07/03/2020 23:06

Thank you - Justchecking

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 23:06

Office workers in my province went back last week so the authorities are keen to prevent another spike. Schools remain closed.
Strict quarantine measures are in place for arrivals from Italy, Korea, Iran and, I think, Japan.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 23:07

Good work mac 12.

Yes let's hope Chris witty and Boris pay attention.

NotJustACigar · 07/03/2020 23:07

I've just googled the Lombardy region which is going into lockdown tomorrow - there are 10 million residents Shock! That is a huge number of people.

And yes thanks for the new thread.

A man in his 80s has died in a Sydney hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, making him the third coronavirus-related death in Australia.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 23:08

I love several garlic cloves in my stir fries and omelettes, or in the tray when I roast anything

I'm single, anti-social and well prepped for the Vampire Wars

Dusty01 · 07/03/2020 23:08

Do you think they will be able to maintain the decrease in numbers once controls are relaxed - ShanghaiDiva?

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 23:11

BigChocFrenzy Grin way to go gurl!

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 23:12

Not sure anyone can predict that @Dusty01

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 23:13

I don’t know. I hope so as I would like to go home!
There have been no new cases for 7 days in my province which is a positive sign. Shops are extending opening hours and restaurants are offering take away and limited hours. I imagine the key return will be schools as this will involve kids, buses, metro, parents and grandparents at collection and drop off so lots of contact.

tryingtoprep · 07/03/2020 23:15

It's best to eat the garlic raw. You get maximum health benefits that way. I'm happy to have garlic breath. There's far worse smells.

NeckPainChairSearch · 07/03/2020 23:15

It will be wild garlic season in May, possibly earlier for some people. Fresh, free garlicky greens. I look forward to it every year, more so this year.

GPwife2411 · 07/03/2020 23:16

I have also used lansinoh (lanolin) for cracked hands with some success - so if anyone has any left from their breastfeeding days it's a good way of using it up! Also v good for cracked lips.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 23:16

Poor ds has sore hands, I have emollient for eczema in the cupboard but not sure if it can replace soap, you can use it to wash with well when there’s no CV around.

Those are the quarantined areas in Italy
Blimey, it's a lot of the country

My older sister has been using diprobase since we shared a room as teenagers...the pungent smell still haunts me

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 23:18

I read yonks ago that lightly cooking garlic released more of its healthy goodies.
I don't have a scientific ref for that though
