coronavirus cases in New York state reach 105 as of this morning.

Governor Cuomo says, more than double the number of coronavirus infections 24 hours ago.

Bercows I've been in the garden. The very lazy wind goes through you, not around and I've been pelted with hail stones Grin

tud41 · 08/03/2020 15:43

@nellodee and can you tell me the basis on the 60/80% getting the virus? that is pure guess work by any stretch and has no bias except covering their own backs just in case!

Horehound · 08/03/2020 15:43

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel honestly, you do sound a bit hysterica if you have been crying all day about it. Bloody hell.
Maybe you should Ttake yourself off this thread and go and spend time with your family instead.
Honestly, life will go on.

It can feel very overwhelming. Brew Cake

Its normal to have a raised anxiety, its a protective mechanism to make us act. Its our clever psychology looking after us instinctively.

Find practical outlets that help, exercise, reviewing information, speaking out about it in forums like this where it can be heard and understood, keep taking steps to balance any fear.

There are.links in the OP which could help. Reach out to help and support.

If Public Health England is just pulling figures out of their arse I would be astonished
it is the best professional judgement they have at the time

So do we believe the professional opinion of experts or the feelings of internet randoms ?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 08/03/2020 15:47

'The Tories are just thinking about money as usual. Hence not closing schools.'

They are being advised by medical experts, they are following their guidance.

I don't think this is a 'Tory' issue at all. They've said repeatedly there's a plan for as things escalate.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 15:48

... and I count Trump as the worst of the internet randoms

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 15:48

The 60/80% is based on comprehensive virus modelling, and from what I've read is the necessarily worst case scenario that countries have to work on, with current evolving data feeding into that to bring it down.

‘The number of coronavirus cases in the UK is going to double every few days, according to a British health expert who was reacting to the news earlier that a total of 273 people have now tested positive.

Prof Tom Solomon, Walton Centre NHS foundation trust, and Institute of Infection & Global Health, University of Liverpool, said 67 new cases in the UK was not that big an increase nor unexpected given it was likely the number of cases would double every few days.‘

Thanks pussycatinboots Smile I managed to get the bedding out on the line and mostly dry. It's finishing off in the drier now. I'm worried about me being ill and therefore am trying to get as much done as possible in the house just in case. I think I've done about 10 loads of washing this weekend now. I've even managed to bleach the kitchen floor. It has stupid tiles that refuse to become clean unless I use bleach due to all the grooves in them. The landlord is not known for his intelligent choices.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 15:51

LEBANON- 4 new cases of Coronavirus, bringing the number of infected people to 32

kateandme · 08/03/2020 15:52

more people will die here becasue of the state of the nhs is alreadu dire.so if their is a sudden pandemic it wont cope.wont be able to care/test have the equiptment ready etc.
i think alot of faults and needless deaths will happen because of that.becasue it already happens without the virus!

DonkeyKong2019 · 08/03/2020 15:52

I can't stand Boris or the Tories but I do actually feel confident in how they are handling this considering it's essentially a game of unknowns and multiple variables

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 15:52

Any country would have to be desperate to close schools,
both because of the economic interests
and also the knock-on effect as parents in essential services stay home to look after their kids

imo all UK parties would choose to wait until / unless things get worse.
Maybe extend the Easter break

A better compromise for now, to relieve political pressure, would be to allow parents who wish to keep their kids at home to do so,
without fines or losing their current school place

DonkeyKong2019 · 08/03/2020 15:52

And it pains me to write that 😂

Reallybadidea · 08/03/2020 15:53

I don’t think people caught it on the flight, thus disease has a long incubation period (4-10 days).

The flight landed on the 2nd and the other people on the flight were announced to be positive on the 8th, so right in the middle of the incubation period. I think if it was spreading so widely in London a week or more ago, that a group of unrelated strangers all developed it before leaving the UK, we'd be seeing much larger numbers of hospitalised patients here.

Justaboy · 08/03/2020 15:53

Waay! some sense from Tescos:)

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51790375

Blueberryham · 08/03/2020 15:54

So looking at the progress so far it is doubling every 2 or 3 days. So it will likely be 3000 in a week. 36000 the following week. Scotland is 18 now, so 216 in a week, 2590 the following week.

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 15:57

How is this thread so huge!! So quick!!

I think its spreading exponentially Grin

I don't want or need chemistry lessons though, and not pages of them.

All I need to know is that soap breaks down fat, and the outer layer od the virus is fat so is deconstructs it very nicely.

So handwashing breaks the cycle.

The schools closing has shown to have very little impact on spread, so far, weighed against massive economic adversity on countries and their populations.

Countries are moving to try to stay on top off ecoic and health systems overwhelm,so the aim is for the country to keep economically viable as long as possible to keep pushing forward the peak of virus weeks to be able to best cope and have systems in place ,from learnt experience, plus tested medications, treatments, and protocols.

Its expected that 20% of nhs staff will contract and be able to return to work frontline.

Someone asked about morgues, etc, for high numbers of mortalities, presumably. This is an already set protocol for any state emergency, already advanced planned and in place. Its not new for covid19.

Does anyone know how many had it in Italy, or other countries, before they started locking down schools, cinemas etc?

tud41 · 08/03/2020 15:58

If Public Health England is just pulling figures out of their arse I would be astonished
it is the best professional judgement they have at the time

the same PHE that predicted 75000 swine flu deaths...

AnyOldSpartabix · 08/03/2020 15:59

I think if it was spreading so widely in London a week or more ago, that a group of unrelated strangers all developed it before leaving the UK, we'd be seeing much larger numbers of hospitalised patients here.

I agree with this, given the reports from Italy. That’s not to say there aren’t unidentified cases and spread, but we’re not experiencing the same as they are.

But it suggests that spread on planes is very likely.

pussycatinboots · 08/03/2020 15:59

bercows swap your groovy floor for my white one Hmm?
I think getting stuck in to extra housework is one way of using the anxiety/energy as a positive IYSWIM. Bathroom/Ensuite all done today, so I'm going to dust between the fins of all the radiators tomorrow - should have bought a mask.
