An Italian doctor says their health service is on the brink of collapse and they have a far superior one to ours.

nellodee · 08/03/2020 15:31

The 100,000 figure has no basis in any official document. The source for it is given in the Sunday Times (which I can't access). Other people have then picked up on that figure and misquoted it, because it served their purposes to do so, or because they had no powers of comprehension, or for whatever reason.

I found you the original source of the quote - "an unnamed official" - and you have chosen to go with the Chinese whispers that have followed after.

Your choice.

It's a lovely day with all the blossom and flowers coming out, but I feel so frightened. I can't stop crying today and can't stop thinking about what will happen. My DH says I am being hysterical. I just want the world to go back to normal.

GatoFofo · 08/03/2020 15:31

Reallybadidea the link to Milan via the woman on the flight is reassuring, thanks for the link.

Twitney · 08/03/2020 15:32

I think it’s a bit much to be saying that most people will have lost a child by the end of this?!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 15:32

vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk/vk/influenza-flu

In the UK it is estimated that an average of 600 people a year die from complications of flu.

In some years it is estimated that this can rise to over 10,000 deaths (see for example this UK study from 2013 , which estimated over 13,000 deaths resulting from flu in 2008-09

nellodee · 08/03/2020 15:32

At best, the 100,000 figure is hearsay from someone involved in "planning". At worst, it's pulled out of someone's arse.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 15:33

Yep, looks covered in poo crumbs to me

DressingGownofDoom · 08/03/2020 15:33

'It's a lovely day with all the blossom and flowers coming out, but I feel so frightened. I can't stop crying today and can't stop thinking about what will happen. My DH says I am being hysterical. I just want the world to go back to normal.'

You need to calm down a bit really. No point crying about it before you know how it's going to affect you.

ChipotleBlessing · 08/03/2020 15:34

@Coquohvan It’s not particularly that it’s her, it’s that it means it’s a multiparty committee (I’m assuming Wales and NI must also have representation), which means any decisions will be fact rather than ideologically driven. And that there is someone in there keeping an eye on the Tories

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 15:34

"I think it’s a bit much to be saying that most people will have lost a child by the end of this?!"

Yes, almost no children have died in China or anywhere else

ChipotleBlessing · 08/03/2020 15:35

I think that Vietnam case is the first where there has been what seems to be confirmed in flight transmission. I wonder what went wrong?

MissPoldark · 08/03/2020 15:36

But you can be middle aged and still be someone’s child.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 15:37

The final decisions will always be made by the government, since they were elected for that purpose and have the authority

However, it is good that in this crisis other parties and the other 3 UK nations are involved and putting their pov
The govt won't want to do something that the other parties oppose, too much political risk for them

YoursTunbridgeWells · 08/03/2020 15:38

@Twitney not most people but a lot of people overall - not all children. In a school of 2000, you'd expect most to be ok if they all caught it but I reckon a a handful could die due CV or other illnesses such as appendictis or asthma attacks which there won't be the capacity to treat. Anything you'd need medical help for normally such as asthma, broken bones etc may well not get any help. And people will die from this.

Zarahaider88 · 08/03/2020 15:38

Can someone please dm the link to the video of Italian hospitals and young people on ventilation everyone is referring to?

RhubarbTea · 08/03/2020 15:39

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel - I understand how you feel. I'm not crying but only because it will mess up my vision and I have an assignment to write.
I do feel very sad about everything that is unfolding. I said on a thread recently on here, that I feel homesick for a world in which this didn't happen.

I think this grief is a perfectly normal response. If it's really affecting your functioning though, consider seeing the GP or seeing whether you have a friend who will sit and listen to how you feel. This thing is a big shock and has seemingly come out of nowhere. Even though we were perhaps long overdue a pandemic of this magnitude, it still feels sudden and frightening. So be kind to yourself. Flowers

legoqueen · 08/03/2020 15:39

Children haven't died in China because of the strict containment approach there - the schools have been shut since the start of the Luna New Year. Not scaremongering, but the UK is currently following a different approach. And some DC (with health problems) are more at risk than others. I wish the schools would close now.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 08/03/2020 15:39

And yes i meant everybody is someone's child. Older people may survive but lose their middle aged children.

I think the child mortality rate from CV will be low based on the figures and data we have BUT a number will die from other normally treatable medical issues.

mrshoho · 08/03/2020 15:39

But they could have already been infected before stepping on that flight Chipotle? I don't suppose London was doing any temp checks etc and even then they may not have had a fever.

seasmize · 08/03/2020 15:39

I don’t think people caught it on the flight, thus disease has a long incubation period (4-10 days). The Vietnamese woman may have been to Milan but she is based in London. All of the infected had spent time in London.

There is a separate report today of a case in Peru acquired in the U.K.

And yesterday some from Australia and Poland.

tud41 · 08/03/2020 15:40

@BigChocFrenzy it is uk check page 50 of this report assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/839350/Surveillance_of_influenza_and_other_respiratory_viruses_in_the_UK_2018_to_2019-FINAL.pdf

flu deaths in 14/15 were circa 25k and 17/18 were 22k

and the clue is in your first sentence *reasonable worst case infection rate" This is still a worst case scenario.

MsSafina · 08/03/2020 15:42

The Tories are just thinking about money as usual. Hence not closing schools.
