I think it was 47 or something yesterday so that is quite a bit of an increase.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:06

WHO— coronavirus is now in more than 100 countries around the world— with 105k cases.

georgeggg · 08/03/2020 14:07

Sky is reporting it's the biggest increase in 24 hours that we have had so far.

Friday was 47
Yesterday was 42
Today 67

(Germany) My NDN hotel owner says people have cancelled all the large booked events - company celebrations, anniversaries etc

This started a few weeks ago and now he expects none whatsoever for months
They are a major source of profit for him

He'll be fine, as hotel is family-owned for over 200 years, hence large financial reserve
However, some other small businesses / with higher overheads are likely to go broke

I expect gyms will be OK, as their memberships here have 3 months or sometimes 1 year cancellation notice for membership.
However, the coffee bar at my gym is noticeably empty, so those takings are down,

FurForksSake · 08/03/2020 14:07

30% jump today, yesterday it was more like 25%, day before was 30% ish.

Seems like a small number tested? Is it c2k a day?

redstararnie76 · 08/03/2020 14:07

But we only tested 2053 people..... seriously!

GenevaMaybe · 08/03/2020 14:08

UK and Switzerland pretty much tracking in parallel now in terms of numbers. Let’s see what happens

vera99 · 08/03/2020 14:08

The health care system in the Italian region of Lombardy is on the brink of collapse, the head of its crisis response unit has said.

"We're now being forced to set up intensive care treatment in corridors, in operating theatres, in recovery rooms. We've emptied entire hospital sections to make space for seriously sick people," Antonio Pesenti told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"One of the best health systems in the world, in Lombardy, is a step away from collapse," he said.

The northern region is one of 15 Italian areas that have had measures imposed restricting travel in a bid to contain the outbreak.

My husband took the children to their swimming lessons this morning, he said it was noticeably quiet.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 14:10

To be fair, many other countries aren't testing much either

Anyone know if this is due to a shortage of kits,
or personnel to perform them and then process them ?

Or just public health policy to direct resources elsewhere ?

Horehound · 08/03/2020 14:10

273-209=64

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 14:11

Before this, Italy had one of the highest life expectancies is the world ... which of course means they have one of the highest % of people agred 80+

WorriedAcademic · 08/03/2020 14:12

27 Feb: 15
28 Feb: 20

Jenasaurus · 08/03/2020 14:13

vera99 · 08/03/2020 14:13

redstararnie76 · 08/03/2020 14:15

At the time of yesterday's announcement, it was 206 cases - the tweet is still on DoHSC's twitter feed - so, 67 cases, it only went up to 209 later in the day.

mumoftwodc · 08/03/2020 14:15

@tryingtoprep they said the pneumonia jab lasts between 5-10 years. If you are aged 65-70 it's given free by the NHS or if you have health issues it may also be given free. We booked with Boots and it should have been £70 but the pharmacist scanned a coupon for £5 off.

Donenow1 · 08/03/2020 14:16

@ofwarren yes he most certainly is. Privately I'm bloody furious at her complete disregard for my husband/her brother's ill health. "I'll do just what I want and damned everyone else"... I might add obviously she lives with her husband a Frenchman, and his Mother is extremely elderly. Upper 80s I think.

Horehound · 08/03/2020 14:16

So have italy peaked?

vera99 · 08/03/2020 14:16

We are around 2 weeks behind Italy if things pan out the same and therefore logically multi lockdowns. Why not get ahead of the curve and start now. Certainly, every reason, if you can self isolate then now, is a good time to start. Particularly so if you are over 60 and/or have pre-existing conditions.

SistemaAddict · 08/03/2020 14:17

The level of testing is ridiculously low.
Do we know where the LOCATIONS are of the new cases? Not that it really matters seeing as it's pretty much everywhere.

redstararnie76 · 08/03/2020 14:18

I don't believe Italy have announced their figures for today yet?

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:20

Italy announce some time usually between 5 and 6

wobblywindows · 08/03/2020 14:21

So an increase of 64. Doesn't seem too bad.

A week ago - 1st March, the total cases was 35. Since then its been nearly doubling every 2 days.
