The uk is definitely not testing the same way as other countries.

Quartz2208 · 08/03/2020 13:46

testing will only pick up as well the mild/moderate cases - those with severe symptoms are likely to be tested when they reach hospital

I think there is a realisation that widespread testing is not going to stop anything

That said though the low numbers can have the opposite effect - Italys numbers of people in hospital and severe look horrific because of undertesting so actually I think that fuels more panic

justchecking1 · 08/03/2020 13:46

From Worldometer:

2 new cases in Indonesia: a 55-years-old man and a 36-years-old man who is thought to have contracted the virus while working as a crew for the Diamond Princess* cruise ship in Japan

That's a pretty long incubation period there. What is it, 3-4 weeks since everyone left?

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 13:47

@Donenow1 I don't blame you! Is your husband on the same page?
It's far too big of a risk in my opinion.

fedup21 · 08/03/2020 13:47

But it’s important the low numbers are not used to fuel an “everything’s ok here” mantra, because the longer you leave this to spread without measures the worse the outbreak will be.

This is exactly what I think is happening!

IntergalacticSuperstar · 08/03/2020 13:48

Could it be that it's presenting in a very mild way to most Brits so they don't feel ill enough to go to the GP?

GPwife2411 · 08/03/2020 13:49

Testing isn't going to stop anything but undertesting will lead to the wrong measures being taken at the wrong time, and will lead to a false sense of security for those disinclined to follow advice.

Plus honestly data are really important if we want to look at predictors of outcomes and discover once and for all if there is this iceberg of undiagnosed cases that it has been assumed exist (but Chinese serology studies suggest may not exist).

WorriedAcademic · 08/03/2020 13:49

Just been reading that people are fleeing northern Italy in their hundreds., possibly thousands. Lockdown announced but no road blocks, trains still running, planes still flying. So everyone is escaping while they can. Guess that’s the rest of Italy fucked.

Quartz2208 · 08/03/2020 13:50

the problem is with being unconcerned about from those with underlying conditions is its hard to reach a certain age without them. My 67 year old parents are fit for their age and look younger but one has high blood pressure the other a very slow growing cancer. My FIL has diabetes.

www.statnews.com/2020/03/03/who-is-getting-sick-and-how-sick-a-breakdown-of-coronavirus-risk-by-demographic-factors/

States that 60% of US adults have an underlying condition (which sounds high)

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 13:52

2 news deaths & 77 new cases. 3 deaths & 265 cases of coronavirus in total for the Netherlands

ChipotleBlessing · 08/03/2020 13:52

@justchecking1 I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually got it in Indonesia. There have been people found positive in the Netherlands whose travel history was Indonesia and the Dutch government have sent advisors to help the Indonesians with the virus. Which would be a weird thing to do if cases were genuinely as low there as claimed.

unluckyagain · 08/03/2020 13:53

@Quartz2208. I'm not young, neither is my DH. He has health issues. I don't have any that I'm aware of but who knows. I didn't mean it to sound as if anyone doesn't matter. Everyone, no matter what age, matters.

ajandjjmum · 08/03/2020 13:57

Who are the first numbers for ofwarren?

ajandjjmum · 08/03/2020 13:58

Oh sorry - all for Netherlands.

Destinysdaughter · 08/03/2020 13:58

Thought this cover of The New Yorker was pretty accurate! Sadly.

Here in Devon we have the largest number of cases outside of London! Churston Ferrers (where 2 cases have been confirmed) is the sleepiest little village you could ever come across!!
Just found this on local news - which suggest that community transmission is unfortunately very easy. One worker at a GP practice in Torquay seems to have infected 2 other workers who have also been confirmed.
I'm concerned about the incubation period. Churston Ferrers school has been closed for deep cleaning since a case was found positive on Monday or Tuesday this last week - but it re-opens tomorrow. Do you think others could still be infected but not yet showing symptoms? And then they will go back into the petri-dish of a school environment!

GPwife2411 · 08/03/2020 14:02

Thanks @ofwarren

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:02

16 cases of coronavirus in Slovenia (total)

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:04

Sweden — coronavirus cases have surpassed 200, currently at 203. 115 of those are concentrated in Stockholm.

FurForksSake · 08/03/2020 14:04

273, that's quite a jump.

Horehound · 08/03/2020 14:04

So an increase of 64. What was the increase yesterday?

Doesn't seem too bad

redstararnie76 · 08/03/2020 14:05

An additional 67 cases if my maths are correct!

Youngatheart00 · 08/03/2020 14:05

64 doesn’t seem like a lot but add in all the community spread and I expect it’s 10 times higher.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:05

Yeah it's 67 I think.
What's the highest jump we have had?
