I had to take time out from the thread yesterday afternoon/evening as I realised it was consuming my thoughts and disturbing my sleep. I feel much brighter today and the sunshine is helping.
I know what you mean.
But I just went down to my local Asda (not one of the massive ones) and it was quiet with all the shelves full - even loo roll and hand soap. Business as usual, really.

There are concerns that the 15 minute blood test is not as accurate as the PCR test currently in use in the UK. I haven't looked into this in detail but based on knowledge of testing for other viruses I would expect the blood test to be looking at antibody numbers and so won't detect people with a low viral load or in very early stages of infection. The PCR test will detect these and at the moment that's important for stopping transmission and mapping outbreaks.

As our case numbers get higher I think the blood test will start to be used.

*99% of the patients treated in Nice hospital have recovered...

@BriocheBriocheBrioche* I think you have misquoted that article. Google translate says the quote is '99% of patients who have coronavirus will recover. Of course, one death in 100 is one death too many, but it is not a virus that will decimate the population. We know this virus. "

So it is just more wishful thinking and reassuring of the public. In any case Nice does not have a large number of patients to my knowledge.

Just watched the Sky News interview with a British writer on lockdown in North Italy.

He mentioned that there was a leak about the lockdown which then saw people quickly jumping on trains to be with partners/family in other parts of the country - so partly defeating the object of quarantine.

pasanda · 08/03/2020 12:18

So I work on a busy postnatal ward. A member of staff went to Rome last weekend. She has been back at work ever since.
I just had a quick chat with our ward manager who said 'to be honest, I'm past the point of caring. We're all going to get it so we're all fucked (laugh laugh). We can't make her stay at home can we, she's intelligent enough to make the right choice. '

Helpful.

I thought anyone returning from ANYWHERE in Italy should stay at home, or am I wrong?

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 08/03/2020 12:19

I have been waiting for a pandemic for years, and had all sorts of prep and ideas, but now it's becoming a reality I feel numb and scared.

I feel we should have done more to contain it at the start, like stopping flights from affected areas or quarantining people more strictly. But now the chance for containment is gone, and we will have community spread. Unfortunately most people seem to be unconcerned, which will impact on them altering any of their behaviour, but if we could slow the spread it would help the NHS.

And speaking of the NHS, people could also help by not calling ambulances or going to A&E for absolute bollocks! But they won't think. We seem to have developed a nation of entitled and ignorant people (yes, Irish footballer, I'm looking at you) It may be stupidity that kills the human race, rather than coronavirus.

I think they should have a load of testing kits that they can bring out to your house, so if you have symptoms you call a special number and they ring you a kit. This would maybe ease the pressure on 111 and 999 and A&E departments, who I feel will soon be overwhelmed by everyone with a cold panicking and ringing/ turning up/ demanding seen.

As a small business owner, I am also worried whether we can survive financially. But I've kinda gone through worry and come out the other side with a what-will-be-will-be attitude. Yes, my business might go bust, but that might open a new opportunity. Yes, we are probably all getting Covid 19 , but hopefully we will get through it, and maybe society might become a better and less selfish place afterwards (it didn't work for The Walking Dead) but we can hope! People may have to pull together and not take for granted all the services and luxuries this society allows.

Yes, it's coming. It's actually overdue. I have been quietly stocking up since January (No panic buying here) just enough to get us through a few weeks of ill health/isolation. Unfortunately I need to work, and I work with the general public, so I probably can't avoid it, but I will take the kids out of school when it gets close, keep my elderly father away and do my best to keep us all safe. I am now clinging to the idea that this virus will have a huge impact on our society, economy, community.....But maybe there will be some changes for the better too??

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 12:20

gp wife

Are you sure of that.
My dd was rushed to a and e, once at around this time of year and once in Sept /Oct.
Something in the air had brought down lots of dc and they all had same breathing issues. Both time the ward was full and all needed same equipment and they ran out.
I could hear the phone calls begging other areas for some.

On the ward some dc had diagnosed asthma but their dp said they had never experienced anything like this. My dd never diagnosed, struck down and the ward was mostly people like us with the odd asthma patient in there.

I'm particularly worried that this is the classic time of year for that to trigger and on top of that we now have covid.

cologne4711 · 08/03/2020 12:21

my parents are over 60. It is of no comfort to me that people younger to them are likely to be fine

60 isn't old. My husband is 57, I'm not writing him off!

Awkward1 · 08/03/2020 12:22

What are other countries being told about death rates??
And recovery

Uk said today 1%.......

VivaLeBeaver · 08/03/2020 12:22

Apparently the virus is excreted in urine, someone needs to develop a urine test similar to a pregnancy test pronto.

WorriedAcademic · 08/03/2020 12:22

@pasanda, no it’s only certain areas of Italy.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 12:23

Pasanda it's all based on dates.

So she may have returned the day after the cut off date?
I'd escalate that further.

SansaSnark · 08/03/2020 12:24

@pasanda official advice is still only to self isolate if you have come from one of the 11 lockdown towns, or if you show symptoms from Northern Italy, so your colleague is following the fco advice.

I think this will have to change from Monday as lombardy goes into lockdown - honestly it should have changed last week.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 08/03/2020 12:24

I don't know how easy they are to get but has anyone looked into buying an oxygen generator? Think they are around £700, but for those of you with asthmatic dc it could be reassuring to know you had oxygen at home I may actually have one just in case

unluckyagain · 08/03/2020 12:24

You only have to isolate from most areas of Italy if you have symptoms.

fedup21 · 08/03/2020 12:26

So, other areas of Italy are ‘ok’?

DH’s colleague (who he sits next to) flies back from a holiday in Rome today. There are no new requirements about SI when travelling from other areas of Italy, are there?

Choux · 08/03/2020 12:27

Apparently the virus is excreted in urine, someone needs to develop a urine test similar to a pregnancy test pronto.

It has occurred to me that perhaps toilet doors in cafes and restaurants which always seem to open inwards and people not washing their hands post toilet use could be a key method of transmission. Even if you wash your hands the last door to leave the facilities usually has a handle you need to touch and pull which passes stuff on from anyone who didn't wash their hands.

ClientQueen · 08/03/2020 12:29

My dad is the most laid back person ever (described his anaphylactic reaction as "a bit inconvenient") Grin
Spoke to him earlier and his thoughts were - if people think they just have a cold they'll be spreading it everywhere, why aren't they being tested? And they could give it to someone like you who will get really sick with it. It's going to spread like crazy in places like London where they're commuting so close. And also boris is a blundering idiot, wash your bloody hands, what does he think we've been doing, licking them clean? Grin

pasanda · 08/03/2020 12:29

Ok thank you. I'm just glad she's not working with me today!

She's had a busy weekend at a music concert and a musical!

somanydevices · 08/03/2020 12:30

I'm organising an annual event through work. It involves 30-40 people from our sector from across the UK coming together in a venue with overnight accommodation for 2 days in May. It's partly work but also partly leisure; some people bring partners and kids as it's a lovely location.

I work for a very small company, I don't have an HR department or anyone like that to talk to about this, so I thought I'd ask you lot for a start!

We have to pay for the venue next week. We don't HAVE to do it in May, it's just that we've shared the date and people are looking forward to it. We could delay till the autumn.

I'm wondering it it's a crazy idea to spend all that money if there's a credible risk it might get shut down because of coronavirus?

Would you go ahead or not?

Can anyone point me in the direction of solid advice from Government sources etc I can share with the others?

Thanks.

oneteen · 08/03/2020 12:32

Apparently the virus is excreted in the urine, someone needs to develop a urine test similar to a pregnancy test pronto

This is already been done by a company in Bedfordshire (who also did pregnancy tests) although I think there may also be a finger prick one too...

Quartz2208 · 08/03/2020 12:34

If you don’t have to do it in may delay until Autumn

woodencoffeetable · 08/03/2020 12:34

can't the cruise ship 'just' sail back to italy?

(probably a bad idea)

GPwife2411 · 08/03/2020 12:35

@Jumpingintotheabyss - certainly they will be stretched but nothing like the adult services. China's experience inevitably includes lots of higher risk children as well as the low risk majority and it sounds like, unlike flu and RSV, this virus is not as pathogenic in children so we are unlikely to see the sort of spike you're describing due to CV (of course, another bug might cause that sort of spike and that is a real risk that they happen at the same time). The paeds I know are preparing carefully for the possible need to increase capacity so I hope that will help too.
