@Bercows but how long will you be having pj days for? Seems like this could be here for a long time so I'm not sure what difference it will make. Just go out but wash hands...

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 08/03/2020 11:09

There have been younger people succumbing to this.
As Marr pointed out, the frontline doctors, of which there were quite a few but also the 23 year old female Iranian football player and the man who contracted first community transmitted in Italy is a 38 year old marathon running amateur footballer and still in ICU. I’m sure theres many more examples.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 08/03/2020 11:11

The Italian doctors message to other countries posted up thread is very strong. I think the quarantine there will put more pressure on our government to pull the plug on large gatherings and work from home where possible.

I am going to get out in the countryside today and make a point of spending time with the dcs, DH is abroad at international conference which we hoped would be cancelled, but sadly, no.

colouringinpro · 08/03/2020 11:12

I don't think many people will, for a variety of reasons, reduce activity/travel without being explicitly told to do so.

SnoozyLou · 08/03/2020 11:14

The problem is that lots of people don't give a shit are are happily carrying on as normal after travel and spreading it around.

I think it's worse than that. Reading another thread, some people are actually spurred on by it, incentivised by cheap holidays.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 11:16

THIS Snoozy The defiance is deafening.

^^^^^^^ Yes this ^^^^^^^^

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 11:18

Brioche, economy is also vital.
In my mind, trying to swerve this short term will help the economy longer term. More people who need beds and longer term care will get them. Access to medical help will be quicker.
Rather than no beds and no help. People will be able to get back to work quicker and cover for fallen Co workers.
Surely us all getting it at the same time will be disaster for economy?

I don't get people out of hand dismissing any regards for the money that keeps us all ticking over, fed with roof over our head.

lakequeen · 08/03/2020 11:18

The 23 year old Iranian footballer didn't die, she had to release a statement saying she was alive!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 08/03/2020 11:18

It saddens me that so many of you are ready to write off anyone over 60. I am over 60, am pretty fit and healthy, no underlying conditions, and I'd be bloody annoyed if they didn't treat me.

MarshaBradyo · 08/03/2020 11:19

Yep closing schools would probably see this group doing more holidays

Freezingold · 08/03/2020 11:20

It helps me to look at other countries, and those that are getting on top of it are those that are being more proactive before the virus properly hits such as Hong Kong and Singapore. And that depends a lot on culture and us as people all doing our bit.

For example my parents are at high risk, and were not changing a single thing, not even hand washing, until I talked to them. They just don’t mind if they get it. At first they thought I was being over panicked, however they now see that their actions could reduce other people getting it, and now are fully on board. They don’t have to change their lives massively. Simple things like getting us to give them a lift instead of the bus. Not bringing the grandchildren around as often, being very careful around them, and probably from next week not bringing the gc at all.

SistemaAddict · 08/03/2020 11:20

@Horehound we are having a pj day as I don't feel well, dd is still tired after her residential trip, Dd1 has a fever, and ds is snuffly too. We have lots to do in the house and no need to go anywhere so pjs and films and games are our plan for the day. I need to keep wading through the laundry and bake more bread but we can have a relatively lazy Sunday. I'm a single parent with no family to help so I take my rest where I can.

I'm hoping for more guidance tomorrow but not holding my breath on that. I don't think the government will act until things are critical.

GPwife2411 · 08/03/2020 11:22

@MaxNormal - thanks for the Bayesian analysis, looks interesting. Will finish my coffee before diving in though!

Also thanks for the up to date PHE stats link @nellodee

It's a marathon not a sprint so my self-care today is going to be teaching my daughters some pilates and going for a walk with family along the river.

zefstar76 · 08/03/2020 11:22

Is it true that our testing takes 24-48 hours as opposed the 15 minute test used in other countries (including Italy)? If so, won't we be a couple of days behind in seeing what the most recent figures are? It could be escalating much quicker than we are aware.

woodencoffeetable · 08/03/2020 11:23

there is another thread about what self isolation means for dog owners.
the selfish defiance is shocking.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 11:23

My only consolation with regards to the dc school is that hopefully, any illness from half term breaks would have reared up by now?
So in terms of that worry, hopefully they are OK. So in terms of primary school the next layer of covid threat will come from their dp, community transmission, and so on.

At least the half term issues may buy us another week or two whilst the children are trapped in this breeding ground of germs.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 08/03/2020 11:26

The local authority figures are so out of date they’re useless. We know someone who received a letter on Friday to say that somewhere they had been for an appointment at the start of last week had had someone in the same day who has since tested positive. The local authority is showing 0

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 11:26

Marsha that doesn't bother me because if schools close we won't be mixing with them! It's that type of course who will be ramping up the chances of virus spread if they remain in school anyway.

Fourducksate · 08/03/2020 11:27

I find it interesting that no one, literally no one on my FB, has posted anything about cv. But to me, it feels like the elephant in the room.

I’ve just posted the link to the Italian article in the Independent, it will be interesting to read the comments.

I’ll let you know.

LarkDescending · 08/03/2020 11:27

Another cruise ship situation (though no cases reported):

Cruise ship refused permission to dock

Another cruise ship has been refused permission to dock because of fears that passengers or crew may be carrying the coronavirus.

The Costa Fortuna is on its way to Singapore after Malaysia and Thailand both refused entry.

There are about 2,000 people on board including dozens of Italian passengers.

The ship's operator, Costa Crociere, said there were no suspected cases of the virus on board. It said Malaysia had imposed restrictions "upon the arrival of travellers of Italian nationality".

Zarahaider88 · 08/03/2020 11:31

@lakequeen there are 2 female football players by the same name in Iran one is from Esfehan and more well known she is alive however another Elham Sheikh’i from Qom who was 23 years old did die. She was in hospital for 1 month with respiratory issues and they couldn’t figure out what it was or diagnose it as it was prior to the outbreak she passed away shortly after the outbreak so then they said it could have been covid-19 that she had been suffering from but never confirmed.

Cora1942 · 08/03/2020 11:34

Yesterday I travelled by train.
At the cash point:
I put one disposable glove on and cleaned the buttons, at bottom and sides with an anti bac wipe.
Pulled the glove off containing dirty wipe.
Then I used hand sanitiser on my hands.
Used cash point as normal.
Now the till should be clean for the next person.

On the train I used a wipe to clean the exit buttons.

I appreciate not everyone can get these products now but if we could all look out for one another that would be a positive thing.
