@FourTeaFallOut It’s practically impossible to google coronavirus related things as there’s so much! This is the model behind the bbc contagion programme though, which did show the slow spread to NE England.

Sorry, just spilling all my anxiety onto the page ! I know we are all worried, about loved ones, and ourselves. My closest friend is on holiday in Florence, which isn’t helping my stress levels !

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 10:41

@Wingingthis
A woman gave birth yesterday in south Korea and she has the virus. The baby doesn't have it and both are doing fine.
There have been a few cases showing that this is generally what happens.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 10:42

Hore a very good calming measure indeed, although it probably creates more apathy in those who are dismissing the threat of this. I wonder how many ‘young people’ who appear fit and healthy and yet have underlying health issues, poor immune systems to poor diets and drink culture, smokers, recreational drug users and so on will take this as a green light to carry on as normal.

I expect a large portion of viewers of Marr will be in the high risk category (age) so hopefully a message was conveyed.

SistemaAddict · 08/03/2020 10:42

I think things will really kick off this week too. I don't feel well today and have had a sore throat and cough on and off all week. Bad headache kicked in on Friday and is still loitering. Temperature is slightly raised but nothing to write home about. I take regular strong painkillers along with paracetamol for chronic pain anyway and can't take anything else. I'm seriously considering no school this week.

Mittens030869 · 08/03/2020 10:45

I don't read panic on here, I read worry, concern, preparation and precaution.

I agree with this. It's helpful for people like me, who have other health problems, in my case Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; I also had pneumonia last year.

It's much better to get the facts, rather than just worrying about it.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/03/2020 10:45

Potential rationing of ITU beds has tipped me over the edge.

One of my DCs has dreadful asthma, it's controlled now, but, he has a long history of near miss asthma episodes. I've wanted to keep him off school and been talking myself down - but, seeing that in the Indie, no, he's staying off and I'm phoning his asthma nurse for advice.

I am genuinely scared. He's a risk, they'd not give him the bed.

Confuddledtown · 08/03/2020 10:46

@Horehound healthy people have a responsibility to minimize the spread to the vulnerable. I'm pregnant and have asthma. I dont think it's too much to ask the healthy to do their bit to help stop the spread just because they wont be directly effected. People over 60 aren't a write off. Plenty of people have loved ones in high risk categories. Extra handwashing, avoiding unnecessary travel and crowded places isnt much to ask when you're talking about potentially saving peoples lives, just because it isnt your own life at risk. CV is a societal problem, not an individual one. I understand the need to minimize panic, but it's possible to have a healthy level of concern, if not for yourself but for the most vulnerable among us.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 10:48

Sirvix I can’t see there being any ‘could be like Italy’ scenarios, it’s a case of will be. They’re just ahead of us time wise. Also their weather is a little milder than ours right now by a couple of degrees so I would say we will follow suit unless a miracle happens.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 10:51

Agree wehttam why would we be any different?
We haven't done anything as a country to stop it happening.
Do people think that it magically won't happen here?

LarkDescending · 08/03/2020 10:54

Notable from the local authority figures:

Devon: 10
Torbay: 4

Early days but it will be interesting to see how the distribution develops.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 08/03/2020 10:56

Whettam I’m in international events 😂

This area relies on tourism and the large scale events that happen here regularly.
If this continues into the summer months many, many business will struggle to stay open.

Having said that, it was 17 degrees here yesterday and the seafront was buzzing and the restaurants were doing a good trade.

We’ll see how it all pans out. Obviously health is the number one priority but for a lot of people the economic fall out of this will be more serious than if they were to catch the virus...

Zarahaider88 · 08/03/2020 10:56

Currently 31 weeks pregnant, asthmatic and anaemic still suffering from HG so not eating well and sleep deprived due to having a toddler so I don’t think my immune system is in the best shape. Really worries me to hear those young people who have sadly passed away due to being over worked and not eating and sleeping well

Delatron · 08/03/2020 10:57

I don’t know why people think an Italy situation won’t happen here. We don’t have special powers. We’re not doing anything to stop the spread. The government advice to self isolate if you have symptoms is pointless as we all know there’s a 2 week incubation period.

RhodaCamel · 08/03/2020 10:58

bercows I have the exact symptoms, probably just a cold but my anxiety has gone into overdrive. So many viruses around at this time of year.

oneteen · 08/03/2020 10:58

The UK is fortunate that Italy have taken the action it had just before tomorrows meeting - it will certainly result in a review of what action needs to be taken.

I was listening to Radio 4 last night and there appear to be differing opinions of whether the virus spreads before symptoms are shown PHE state no action is required yet if no symptoms, expert virologists state that the virus is being transmitted prior to symptoms showing and that there should be a longer quarantine period.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2020 10:59

Thanks so much ChipotleBlessing I'm going to have a proper read of it later but it's reassuring in the absence of any sentinel practices here.

Sunshinesky1981 · 08/03/2020 11:01

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-england/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-england

I'm obviously not reading this right. On this is says that Reading has had no reported cases, but the man who died was in the Royal Berkshire hospital? Does this come under a different local authority?

Number12 · 08/03/2020 11:02

I think the footballer should definitely face consequences from his actions. Whilst he didn't have a confirmed test YET he knew there was a strong possibility but he didn't give a shit did he. The club are distancing themselves from negative press.

Horehound · 08/03/2020 11:03

@Confuddledtown I didn't say healthy people shouldn't do their bit but it should offer reassurance to them and also maybe curb panic buying etc and leave the goods for those who really need them.

MissPoldark · 08/03/2020 11:04

@Wingingthis
From what I’ve read on WHO reports, being pregnant doesn’t put you at higher risk (which was not the case with swine flu). There have been a few cases in pregnant women and from what I can remember I’m sure they all recovered.

www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30365-2/fulltext

“ The clinical characteristics reported in pregnant women with confirmed COVID-19 infection are similar to those reported for non-pregnant adults with confirmed COVID-19 infection in the general population and are indicative of a relatively optimistic clinical course and outcomes for COVID-19 infection compared with SARS-CoV-1 infection.”

But it also notes that the study was very small, and I think to be super cautious they would still assume pregnant women to be in an at risk group, simply because they don’t have enough data and this has been the case with other respiratory illnesses. But don’t be alarmed - it’s better that more would be done to keep you safe as a precaution.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 11:04

El Salvador will deny entry to foreigners coming from France or Germany due to coronavirus, president says; citizens coming from those countries will be quarantined for 30 days

SistemaAddict · 08/03/2020 11:04

The problem is that lots of people don't give a shit are are happily carrying on as normal after travel and spreading it around.

We are having a pj day and resting as much as possible.

WaterSheep · 08/03/2020 11:08

The problem is that lots of people don't give a shit are are happily carrying on as normal after travel and spreading it around.

I agree. The large crowds at sporting events and huge numbers of people at Crufts, show that most people aren't trying to contain possible spread.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 11:09

Haha Brioche I wrongly assumed you had emigrated to open a cake shop living the dream 😂 sorry lol.

Joking aside though, you are going to be in for a long spring-summer if this carries on in to those months. I was shocked when SXSW was cancelled, my guess is we better get used to these last minute changes for the foreseeable future.

Cannes is directly in COVID19 cross hairs, let’s see what March and April bring.
