@Confuddledtown I live in NI and am absolutely disgusted by the news of this young mans selfish actions. I actually think he should be prosecuted for putting so many people at risk when he should have been isolating himself.

The 24 hours advice is stupid as well. The incubation period is longer than that 😡

nellodee · 08/03/2020 10:02

I have been thinking about the evolution of threads about the Coronavirus on Mumsnet.

First, we had just a few and most people hadn't really thought about it. Then we had a bunch of people asking about going on holiday, and the vast majority of people saying "Just carry on as normal". We had a phase when most of the threads were making fun of those who were concerned. Then people made fun of preppers. Then people started talking about closing schools and were laughed at. Then people started talking about panic buying and started aiming vitriol at the preppers. Then people started being angry at people who suggested closing schools, saying they were being selfish.

At this point, the threads which are moving quickly are those which are discussing new pieces of information or discussing when, rather than if, to close schools. How to provide childcare and provisions for those who need it. How to protect elderly relatives.

It's been a really rapid evolution, but I think we are getting to where we need to be.

Just read this

www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus-italy-doctors-intensive-care-deaths-a9384356.html?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1583654202

and now feeling a lot more concerned.

"In Italy 10% of patients needed ICU care"

but this really chilled me:

"UK hospitals are already discussing how they will need to ration care to those most likely to survive in the event there are not enough beds, ventilators or staff to care for the numbers infected if the worst case scenario predictions prove accurate."

middleager · 08/03/2020 10:06

That's spot on You
Just ventured on to the "I'm not concerned/aren't I hard?" thread and it's just like that.

nellodee · 08/03/2020 10:06

Eggman, that is both really interesting and really depressing.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 10:07

nellodee I’ve been flamed so many times I’m surprised I don’t come with a dip!

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 10:07

ITALY governor of the Piedmont region— is positive for #coronavirus

Confuddledtown · 08/03/2020 10:08

@Linwin I agree. He has to face consequences. Not only for a sense of justice but to highlight the severity of his selfish actions and to deter other people who are not taking this seriously from doing similar. I also think he should be liable for all the financial implications he has caused.obviously the financial side is much less important, but when he has no regards to the health side, something needs to hit him where it hurts.

nellodee · 08/03/2020 10:09

If you insist on being finger food during an epidemic, you get what you deserve, Wehttam.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 10:10

PORTUGAL- 25 cases of coronavirus in total now.

LarkDescending · 08/03/2020 10:11

Wehttam I had been wondering about the Italian airports. What is the point of a “lockdown” if the airports are open??

A banner on the website of Milan Malpensa airport reassures passengers that “the activities of Linate and Malpensa airports are continuing regularly.” Bergamo Airport’s website largely ignores the virus but shows live (and apparently normal) arrival and departure information.

Newjez · 08/03/2020 10:12

@nellodee

I just thank god for Mumsnet. It is an amazing progressive, measured, appropriate and reasonable response to what is looking like the most critical event to face us in a decade.
I don't read panic on here, I read worry, concern, preparation and precaution.
If the government and the press followed this threads lead, I think we as a country would be in a much better place. I would like to thank all those who contribute.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 10:13

Indeed, the non believers REALLY don’t want to believe it would appear.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 10:15

It will be interesting to see the naysayers on the "I'm not concerned" threads change their tune when things get progressively worse.
I think we will see true panicking then.

Obviously I'm very worried about what is going to happen but I'm as prepared as I possibly could be. Forearmed is forewarned.

Youngatheart00 · 08/03/2020 10:16

Question - is social media - specifically twitter - being deliberately repressed re coronavirus?

MissPoldark · 08/03/2020 10:16

Think you’re definitely onto something with that theory @RedToothBrush

MissPoldark · 08/03/2020 10:18

I do wonder - I’ve shared stuff on there & it’s almost like no-one has seen it. On the other hand posts that mock the perceived over reaction seem to be getting lots of attention.

middleager · 08/03/2020 10:18

Young
When I go on Twitter, #coronavirus is never in the trending list, even though it's clearly number 1, so you could be right.

ScatteredMama82 · 08/03/2020 10:19

@Newjez I second that. This thread is a godsend, and I'm really grateful to the contributors for all their hard work. I'm actually taking a day off from constantly checking for updates. I feel like I have done all I can for now, and I'm driving myself mad with 'what-ifs' so I'm having a day off the internet and enjoying a day at home with my family.

See you all tomorrow.

Youngatheart00 · 08/03/2020 10:20

It’s quite scary if that is the case. Perhaps social media have been asked not to ‘promote hysteria’ however at this moment especially considering the situation in Italy it seems crazy that relatively trivial stuff is trending ahead.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 08/03/2020 10:21

Graph from telegraph article - pink is no mitigation, blue is with mitigation (closing schools, banning large gatherings, restricting travel and movement as much as possible), - less stress on NHS and fewer people die, basically.

X axis is time, Y axis number of people with disease.
