Very interested Geneva
We definitely want to hear what is happening in Switzerland.
This thread discusses coronavirus across the world.

slartibarti · 08/03/2020 08:48

Sometimes the point is one of offering reassurance to the public that measures are in place, which can helpful in preventing panic and hysteria.
It's only reassuring if people don't know you can have coronavirus without having a temperature.

nellodee · 08/03/2020 08:49

Bloody hell egg man that’s grim.

mrshoho · 08/03/2020 08:50

@keepmoving it's the Holiday Inn at Heathrow and has been designated as a quarantine centre. over the last week hoardings like you would see in a building site have been put up. I don't know if there are any patients there though.

SansaSnark · 08/03/2020 08:51

News on Switzerland would be very interesting! The number of cases there has risen pretty sharply, hasn't it? Which is unsurprising, given the border with Italy.

Re school holidays-I know in my school it's 3 weeks until Easter. I wonder if the government will be considering adding an extra week or two to the holidays?

Number12 · 08/03/2020 08:52

What happened to the hotel near Heathrow that was going to be used to isolate C19 patients?

Yes I was wondering that too, but I did think that the set up was rather like the cruise ships. I imagine their air con would also be unable to filter out the virus.

Newjez · 08/03/2020 08:52

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

It's possible that it doesn't react well to UV, which is why people are hoping it will die off in summer. I believe cold and flu react the same. Plus our behaviour is slightly less virus friendly in warm weather, and our immune system is stronger in the sunlight. When the southern hemisphere winter hits, we may get cv19 phase 2.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 08:53

I think people are reassured by action being taken, even if we know it is not 100% effective. Reading lots of posts on here, many are frustrated by the perceived lack of action in the uk.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/03/2020 08:53

Oh that makes sense @Newjez - thanks for the information you can tell I was rubbish at science

Number12 · 08/03/2020 08:55

We are about 4 weeks from school hols.... I really think in a weeks time things will be very different. Is changing the school hols down to just the head or the local authority unless government imposed?

SansaSnark · 08/03/2020 08:56

Are other people feeling skeptical that warm weather will slow down the spread in any meaningful way? This seems like a hope, rather than anything with any legitimate basis.

I don't think we can trust the figures coming out of SE Asia, for example - I know on a previous thread we discussed the sharp rise in cases of "viral pneumonia" in Thailand for example. And AFAIK the current temperatures in South Korea are equivalent to spring temperatures in the UK.

There isn't a lot of spread in most hot countries because the virus isn't there in large numbers, I think, rather than warm weather stopping the spread.

Number12 · 08/03/2020 08:58

Upthread pp mentioned potus getting it, if he did and died then the US economy would tank and the UK markets would follow, we would now likely hit recession (again ffs!)

does anyone know who take over boris if he gets it??

Oldmrswasherwoman · 08/03/2020 09:00

Dominic Cummings I think Wink

NemophilistRebel · 08/03/2020 09:00

Is not necessarily warm weather thy stops it but the increased sunlight as it’s the UV that will stop the spread

SansaSnark · 08/03/2020 09:01

@Number12 Even if it's theoretically legal, I can't see LAs/academies changing holiday dates at short notice without being told to by the government. They have to provide a certain number of days in school a year, so couldn't extend holidays and have to take into account the bank holidays, exam dates and so on.

middleager · 08/03/2020 09:02

What's bothering me this morning is how lucky we are in the UK.

We are two weeks behind Italy. We've had chance to see this play out in China, Italy - to learn, to plan and prepare. Those countries did not get that window.

It's wasted though as many remain complacent while we act slowly, letting flights go in and out, allowing huge gatherings because heaven forbid precious sport is touched. Some organisations that could let employees wfh remain all about presenteeism while colleagues and bosses roll their eyes at this "fuss over nothing". Wake up!

It's like waiting for the juggernaut to hit us.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 08/03/2020 09:03

My friends are still merrily planning meet ups and days out for the next few weeks/months. I seem to be the only one who thinks the shit is going to seriously hit the fan in a week or two and probably, going to soft play/cinema/theatre/dinner mightn't be the best idea. They think, well there are only 200 cases in 67 million pop, so what 0.00029% at mo, but they don't seem to appreciate that this is a runaway steam train which will literally steam roller the NHS unless drastic measures are put in place.

Did they say the rates roughly double every 3 days? So we're looking at 14-15k by the end of the month.

We're currently in a tiny rental while we do up our wreck of a house - supposed to be finally moving into it end of the month. Shitting myself that we'll be in this rental forever (first world problems I know). Also petrified for my parents and PIL who are 60+ with underlying problems (high blood pressure, asthma). The only solace is that kids seem to do ok for the most part.

Feels cathartic to air my concerns to you lot, if nothing else!

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/03/2020 09:04

I'm curious as to why it's not seemingly taken hold in Africa and India...?

Perhaps it has but many people don’t have access to testing. Or is it because it’s warmer there?

peridito · 08/03/2020 09:05

I've not caught up with the end of the last thread ,never mind this one but I've been looking for cf with swine flu ,SARS etc .

Found this map which shows outbreaks of Covid19 and other viruses
and found it interesting ,but not very reassuring .

GenevaMaybe · 08/03/2020 09:06

Yes it’s a fast-evolving situation here. At the beginning of last week there were 30-something cases. Yesterday it was 268.
We have borders with Italy, France, Austria, Germany and Lichtenstein. So we are surrounded.
Main news here today is the Italy lockdown of course. No official new stats out yet today.

SansaSnark · 08/03/2020 09:06

@NemophilistRebel I understand there's some lab evidence saying UV light can damage the virus on surfaces. However, most surface to surface transmission will happen indoors anyway and I don't think it will effect person to person spread - so I'm not sure increases in UV in the summer will have a significant impact.

I'm not trying to be doom and gloom but I keep seeing people talking about the spread stopping/slowing down in the summer but I'm not convinced that it will happen.

Anyone who bought zinc supplements might be interested in the below. Anyone with medical knowledge who can help with understanding how reliable this source is/what it might mean?

#COVIDー19 has a Zinc receptor. As such, Zinc supplements must be stopped, while masks containing Zinc could be useful.

Where I am we have 4 weeks until the schools break up for Easter. I was talking about it to my head teacher (I’m a teacher) he was saying that the feeling he’s getting is that they will try to keep the schools open as long as they can but perhaps close the week before Easter.

Quartz2208 · 08/03/2020 09:07

India is now on 40 it has risen quite quickly

Africa probably is testing that and it probably not quite as noticeable there

DonkeyKong2019 · 08/03/2020 09:07

I'm on a bella italia Facebook group and it's a eurocamp on lake garda. The quarantine line runs straight through the middle of the lake. It's amazing how many people are still going because the camp is literally just the other side of the quarantine zone
