@tobermoryisthebestwomble

I saw this , however, some with a medical degree will still be out of a job. It's a hiatus some medics find themself in due to the inflexible recruitment process. So unless they "volunteer" ( unlikely as they likely have expenses of their own ) their expertise goes to waste.

Bovneydazzlers · 08/03/2020 08:24

So say in 2 weeks they shut schools. They may be able to reduce the UK figures and after a few months all outbreaks fizzle out.

But what then?

Surely it is going to become endemic in some countries. For example India/Indonesia/parts of Africa where so many people cannot self isolate as they don’t have two days worth of food; let alone two weeks; to enable this. Surely whilst it is endemic in one country, the rest of the world has no chance of it not keeping coming back.

I guess we have to put all resources; as a world; into a vaccine. We need to stave off the worst effects for (12 months/18 months) until the vaccine can hopefully by made or effective treatment is found.

But you cannot close countries down and close borders for that long without huge implications on the economy.

I’m glad I am not the one having to make these decisions; I don’t think there really will be an easy way.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/03/2020 08:26

I keep thinking the DC only have two more weeks at school before the Easter hols - is it four?

I'm curious as to why it's not seemingly taken hold in Africa and India...?

Newjez · 08/03/2020 08:26

This may be a silly suggestion, and if so, feel free to flame me. As we watch Italy fall apart, and their health services get overwhelmed, and their health staff fall to exhaustion, there is a huge section of the community that is medically trained but sitting idle. Veterinary staff. All medically trained. Surely we should be looking at mobilising veterinary staff now, so they can backfill if the NHS collapses under the strain?

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 08:26

This is exactly the situation China faces now: relax control for economic reasons whilst preventing a spike in cases.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

Thanks, her best friend goes to new college and she stays over there quite a bit as well. In fact she was sleeping at new college 2 weekends ago! Her boyfriend goes to Magdalene but they have a 2 night guesT rule so she tends to spend Friday nights at new college and Saturday/Sunday nights in Magdalene.

A final chance to evacuate from the COVID19 red zone. People rush to catch the last trains leaving Lombardy after government declared the quarantine and lockdown of 16 million people in Northern Italy. The mandatory quarantine will last until early April. t.co/9m5Sf7nuhH

So now they spread it all over Italy?

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2020 08:35

Enjoy this week I think is all I'm going to say. I have stuff in so I can teach DS if I need to. I have stuff in so I can keep busy and entertained. I'm seeing close friends tonight and next sat. Beyond that planning much is going to start getting difficult. I'm expecting real disruption to kick in from next week.

The pain buying suggests the UK is at least now mentally preparing for it.

slartibarti · 08/03/2020 08:36

There's an article describing 4 coronavirus cases in the Telegraph today. One, a 35 yr old woman, just had a mild sore throat and cough, and then developed a runny nose after a week and recovered with no complications. No temperature at any stage of the illness.
Exactly what I had a few weeks ago.
So all the screening of people by taking temps is pointless.

SansaSnark · 08/03/2020 08:36

For those parents contemplating keeping children off school, even you don't have permission, you can obviously still keep your children at home. If you are that concerned, then surely accepting the fine (in a worst case scenario) is worth it? Unless they are in a critical year like Y11, and especially if they have pre-existing health conditions, then it's worth considering. I think schools also need to consider the way they deal with absence at the moment - and not be pushing children to come in if they feel mildly unwell and instead encouraging them to stay at home.

I agree with those who say social distancing just can't take place in schools-there isn't space and children are in close contact all the time.

I echo others in saying that the news coming out of Italy is very concerning, and we need (as a country) to take action quickly to prevent a similar scenario happening here.

I think the only positive in the UK is that community transmission numbers are still low. However if we keep importing cases, those numbers will inevitably go up. We need travel restrictions ASAP imo.

I do agree that the government is in a tricky position, because if they introduce measures too early, they will face a lot of pushback and people won't follow restrictions. But if we leave it too long it will be too late.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/03/2020 08:37

@VivaLeBeaver oh dear...I take it she's travelling up Oxbridge for weekends to see her boyfriend and friend then?

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 08/03/2020 08:37

I'm beyond worried about this.
I keep trying to tell myself I'm being irrational but I don't think I am.
I am a front line AHP and I'm convinced it is going to explode inside the hospitals.
I'm not feeling positive with how the NHS are dealing with it to be honest. I believe we are at the point where people with shortness of breath etc should be treated as though they have Corona until proved otherwise.
As it happens unless they've travelled to one of the countries listed we don't do anything.

I do not want to bring it home to my DC, my mother who is immunocompromised since chemo or my father who is 65+ and asthmatic.
My parents help me with childcare and I feel like it isn't worth the risk anymore..

Unfortunately I cannot work from home.

1/25 Part 1 - Why does soap work so well on the SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus and indeed most viruses? Because it is a self-assembled nanoparticle in which the weakest link is the lipid (fatty) bilayer. A two part thread about soap, viruses and supramolecular chemistry #COVID19 t.co/OCwqPjO5Ht

Brilliant twitter thread explaining how soap interacts with the lipid layer of the virus.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/03/2020 08:39

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes, she tends to go once a month. She’s meant to be going back in a couple of weeks!

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 08/03/2020 08:39

One, a 35 yr old woman, just had a mild sore throat and cough

Didn’t it say she had a bright red throat. I’m going to be obsessively checking my throat if it gets at all sore.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 08:40

Re temp screening.
Sometimes the point is one of offering reassurance to the public that measures are in place, which can helpful in preventing panic and hysteria. We have temp checks everywhere in China: when you enter the supermarket, leave your compound etc. My dh is in HK and it’s the same there: arrival at work, entering a restaurant, leaving hotel etc

Very sobering reading from Italian Doctors who are warning the NHS to “get ready”. Only the independent reporting on this letter as far as I can see. (Im going to include a trigger warning for anxiety here actually)
