The concerns the family in MK made re: isolation will be problematic throughout the NHS. Most wards (in hospitals I’ve worked in anyway) have a maximum of 5 or 6 side rooms, usually always in use by patients clinically requiring them (immunocompromised, infectious etc). They are in short supply at the best of times.

BackInTime · 07/03/2020 09:13

Re school closures, wouldn't this mean lots of bored kids being taken to parks, soft play, cinema, shopping centres so mixing more with the general population than they do when they are at school.

Also there will be those who are crazy enough to take advantage of cheaper flights and package deals and travel abroad together with those who will go ahead with travel plans over Easter potentially bringing a whole new wave of infection back with them. Personally I would prefer a government advisory against all non essential travel until after Easter holidays.

tinytemper66 · 07/03/2020 09:13

PP say it is too early to close schools but people should work from home...as a teacher I can't.
I am wondering whether they will close a week before Easter and then keep it closed for a week after. I could fo into work if the pupils are not there to sort out work for them. I dont have a laptop so can't actually work from home.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 09:14

WFH if you can should be the message.

Not everyone can but some who can aren’t for sure.

tinytemper66 · 07/03/2020 09:14

Go into work....

hankyspanky · 07/03/2020 09:15

@RedToothBrush the Government has 'promised' all GP's PPE next week but having a quick look at what this includes seems pretty basic. I just hope Karen in procurement is working on replenishing supplies to protect our front line staff.

I've reached an impasse now to pretty much resigning myself to getting it. As the 'only flu' brigade refuse to face facts and everyone commits to pretty severe measures I can only see this going one way.

Interestingly, there was a poll on Twitter the other day asking people if they thought the Government should impose 'lockdowns' similar to what happened in Wuhan. I think it was around the 93% mark of people saying yes and they would comply.

Glittercandle · 07/03/2020 09:16

If schools are closed them there should be a travel ban too, there will be a few who will take advantage of cheap holidays.

If they close the schools, I genuinely can't imagine people staying in their houses too. They'd be off out on day trips.

^

This. I don't think there will be enough people willing to take this seriously enough to at home with their DC for 2 weeks.

I would be screwed with a 4 week Easter. I’m actively involved in response for this as an SME Supporting emergency services. I have worked everyday since Jan trying to manage response to corona. I have no family to have the kids.

RandomlyChosenName · 07/03/2020 09:20

The sad thing about wfh is that it is generally possible for those in the higher positions who are better off. In low paid low position jobs it is not possible.

The WFH measure would protect the rich but not the poor.

UTAH- 1st case of #coronavirus

TheGirlFromStoryville · 07/03/2020 09:20

Ds sneezed a few times last night.
Got up earlier and is now complaining of a sore throat and still sneezing.
His secondary school was one of those affected by the Italy ski trip, the school sent all those on the trip home to self isolate for 2 weeks - they all returned to school on Thurs (none of ds's y7 went skiing.)

I know its probably just a bog standard cold he has but I'm now petrified.

Letseatgrandma · 07/03/2020 09:20

We had study leave at Easter in 96. Totally different now though with it being late May.

I don’t understand what you mean here?

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 09:22

A reduction in use of transport still can help those who have to go in. Slows the spread down.

If I still had to work I’d rather use a half empty train than packed one.

nellodee · 07/03/2020 09:22

RandomlyChosenName, people working from home protects everyone. For example, lots of those higher paid people might have been travelling into central London on crowded tube trains. If they are not there, it means the rest of the people can spread out a bit more and are less likely to get infected.

nellodee · 07/03/2020 09:24

Letseatgrandma, when I was at school (still in the GCSE era), kids could leave at the end of the term they turned 16, and everyone left at Easter anyway for study leave.

middleager · 07/03/2020 09:26

TheGirl

My son did go skiing in Italy. He was well on his return and our school did not send all pupils home to self isolate (though we later found out some did and were tested).

Then his brother had a cold this week but it was just a cold (and he's asthmatic so I was more cautious than usual). If he'd been coughing, had a fever and had breathing issues, then that would have set my alarm bells off.

Just keep an eye on him for any changes, plenty of fluids and some paracetomol if needed and try not to worry. Lots of normal bugs and colds doing the rounds.

Greendayz · 07/03/2020 09:27

randomly You're right that it's more professional jobs that tend to work better for wfh. And service level jobs that don't. But if those who can work from home do, that doesn't just protect them, it helps slow down transmission which then helps everyone. Also a lot of the longer distance spreading seems to have been business travel, so keeping those travellers at home when they return would help

cheninblanc · 07/03/2020 09:31

Is then where as communities we work together, those who can work from home do, teenagers that are off school do remote lessons and are buddied with a family whose parents work to then teach and look after younger children in the street, local area. Parents can work and our younger population take up the teaching maths, English and babysitting. They don't get paid but they get ucas points or references for jobs future etc?

peridito · 07/03/2020 09:32

@forfeksake in an ideal world I think your son should avoid London and musuems there .

In the real world I guess it's more complicated - will he miss out on related college work ,will he be horribly embarassed at mum keeping him off ?

Can you talk to college to get them to postpone ? Failing that ,send him with woolly gloves /similar to wear ( at least some of the time ) and handgel/surgical spirit mixed with aloe vera gel two thirds spirit to one third av ) .

Good luck .
