Anyone got any views about people in their 60s who had previously not had a flu/pneumonia jab this season getting one now?

Well, I wouldn’t blame them. Mostly eligible people who decline flu jobs do so as they assess their risk of being low. Something like current events may well make them reassess. Obviously the flu jab won’t help with coronavirus but it should help with flu and they might now realise how serious flu can be.....that even normal flu isn’t just a sniffle. People die, etc. There’s been more info in the news, etc about that the last few days.

Dd is 18yo and eligible for flu. Practice nurse offered her the flu jab last time she was there and she bottled it as she’s needle phobic. I wasn’t present but asked dd when she told me if the nurse had explained why she was eligible for flu vaccine. Dd said it was because she has coeliac disease. And that’s all the nurse had said. Hadn’t explained that because of her coeliac disease she has impaired spleen function and is more at risk of catching stuff and more at risk of being seriously affected. So I was a bit cross the full facts hadn’t been explained.

I’d be over the moon if Dd went back and got the shot.....but realise it is late in the flu season to really bother.

Have been reading this thread for a week now, thanks for all the informative posts and link to the petition to close schools which I've signed.

As a SAHM with a DH who mainly works from home we want the option to keep the DCs at home for the next few weeks without sanctions.

Not sure if this has already been posted, two more confirmed cases in Cumbria bringing the total to 4. 1 more in Carlisle, 1 in South Lakeland.

The two new cases aren't linked to the two confirmed earlier in the week.

In 100 GP surgeries, those coming in with milder flu-like symptoms - dry coughs, fever, shortness of breath - will be tested

However there were reports on here this week that people were phoning their Gp or 111 with these symptoms and not being tested because they hasn’t been abroad to one of the infected areas?

Pppppickupapenguin · 07/03/2020 16:09

As a nurse I find this potential (probable?) scenario disturbing to say the least.

@Skyejuly

I'm not scornful at all. I'm just concerned that it's absolutely terrible for mental health for people to be so obsessed.

....and yet, I have observed you post always in the lead up to 2pm, at first it was trying to guess how many, now you post to say will they be on time, when will they be.

I am struggling to make sense of the dichotomy between your posting behaviour and that statement.

I think we agree that we all be mindful of others well-being, physically, mentally and financially.

his deputy Dr Jenny Harries was definitely rowing back towards Containment when interviewed this morning.

Do we know why there's been a change of opinion regarding which stage we're in? Seems odd that a deputy is contradicting what Whitty said a few days ago.

I wonder if it's to do with trying to get closer to the Easter Holidays before announcing we're in the delay phase. Perhaps they will then close schools a week early, and claim this is a preventative measure. Of course this is purely speculative on my part.

Freezingold · 07/03/2020 16:12

I read earlier it is still containment but there has definitely been conflicting reports

It is officially moving into delay... so a kind of cross over time!

magicrainbowbeans · 07/03/2020 16:13

First case at Loughborough Uni not sure if anyone posted that yet

Orangeblossom78 · 07/03/2020 16:14

I don't understand how the numbers can be up to date at the same time as being told it takes 2 days for the results to return. So how can they have the numbers for today rather than 2 days ago.

Orangeblossom78 · 07/03/2020 16:15

Also 7 March 2020
Update on stats and switch to 7am to improve reporting. Regionalised data to be published later today- wonder why that is

oneteen · 07/03/2020 16:16

The Italian figures look worrying in terms of critical cases/overall cases...I assume this is because they are not picking up the cases quickly enough in their aging population.

I just wish our NHS was in a better situation to handle this and the new quicker tests could be manufactured quickly so everyone who thinks they need a test can be tested.

Freezingold · 07/03/2020 16:17

@Letseatgrandma I think the 100 surgeries is to get a random sample. So people phoning up from home wouldn’t be tested necessarily unless they were in that random sample.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 07/03/2020 16:17

Carlislemum

In the same boat. I'm SAHM and DH took early retirement. Really wish we could have DS at home (he has autism / Adhd) I'd feel much better. Or at least given the option to keep them off until things become clearer.

Loughborough uni student has coronavirus

tryingtoprep · 07/03/2020 16:22

I'm now wondering whether I should have a booster pneumonia jab. I've had one but about ten years ago.

Sunshinesky1981 · 07/03/2020 16:25

Hoping someone can help. I've got some hand sanitizer but it only has a 50% alcohol level. I was wondering if I add some surgical spirit to it (which is 95%) to bring it up to a 70% level what my measurements should be per 100 ml ?

mumoftwodc · 07/03/2020 16:25

@tryingtoprep Hubby and I had pneumonia jabs this week as a precaution.

middleager · 07/03/2020 16:25

Re the student from Leicester

'Has not been at uni since Tuesday'
'Recently returned from Italy'

Doesnt matter when he isolated - when was he in uni and for how many days?
Just one day and the horse has already bolted there.

unluckyagain · 07/03/2020 16:25

I pay for a flu jab each year as I'm self employed and can't afford to be ill. I also take a multivitamin each day. So far this year I haven't been ill or had a cold. It may well be luck, but I would have a flu jab if you are able to. It won't protect against coronavirus, but worth having in my opinion.

tryingtoprep · 07/03/2020 16:28

I think it's a good idea @mumoftwodc. Did they tell you how long it lasts for? I had one about ten years ago.

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 16:29

Is the footage of build up to the rugby live? The crowd looks very sparse!

middleager · 07/03/2020 16:32

The article implies the student is still self isolating. They were self isolating. Are they still?
How serious is it?

This is important as so far we keep being told young people sre low risk.

Not once does the VC comment on the student's condition. Of course, speculation would be wrong, and this is why, but there are no reassurances.

I hope the student makes a full recovery soon.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 07/03/2020 16:33

It must be pretty difficult to self isolate in halls with shared facilities.
