Just saw this on FB, from Dr Abdu Sharkawy. (Apologies if it's already been posted on here). Interesting, I think.

"I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared."

"I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19."

"What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess."

"I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even imagine?"

"I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession."

"But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested."

"Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous."

"I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing."

"Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts."
"Our children will thank us for it."

I agree, obsessing over the time can be unhealthy. When we watched the numbers go up and up in China I started to feel physically ill with the stress of not knowing what would happen and had to refocus on plans we, as a family, needed to make.

WouldShouldCould · 07/03/2020 14:35

*My son was in hospital at Christmas with confirmed flu. He's 3. There wasn't sight of any form of additional protective wear at all on any of the medical staff.

That’s shocking*

Is it really? The health staff would probably have had the flu jab so would be unlikely to catch it, that's why covid-19 is different to the flu, as no one is vaccinated against it.

AvocadoOwl · 07/03/2020 14:35

I don't think 43 is too bad however they've only tested 1300 ish more people since yesterday so it's not so great in that context.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 14:36

jumping I expect penalties may be added if the crisis gets considerably worse

Curently, the emergency powers so far just state that people in quarantine

  • that seems to be some people arriving from abroad with particularly high risk or already infected -
can be forcibly detained if need be

There are no actual penalties listed if someone managed to escape

I can see no penalties listed for people advised to self-isolate, because it currently does just seem legally non-binding advice, however strong
(Has anyone else found reports of legally compulsory self-isolation in UK ?)

However, if the government at some stage decides to force some people to self-isolate,
then the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 & later public health legislation would enable them to use penalties to motivate compliance:

England: Legal Responses to Health Emergencies

https://www.loc.gov/law/help/health-emergencies/england.php

II. Powers To Prevent the Spread of Disease

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2008, the Secretary of State may make regulations (referred to as “health protection regulations”) to prevent, protect against, control, and provide a public health response to an incident or to the spread of infection or contamination in England,
.....
The restrictions may include keeping a child away from school, prohibitions or restrictions on events or gatherings,^
....^
The statute limits the powers and penalties the regulations may confer. The regulations can
....
create offenses, although these cannot be punishable with imprisonment or a fine of more than £20,000 (approximately US$35,000);

enable courts to order that anyone convicted of an offense under the regulations take or pay for remedial action;

< afaik, these new offences & penalties have NOT yet been created >
......
Such an order may require that an individual
submit to medical examination;
be removed to a hospital or other suitable establishment;
be detained in a hospital or other suitable establishment (unless otherwise stated, for a maximum period of twenty-eight days);[70]
be kept in isolation or quarantine (unless otherwise stated, for a maximum period of twenty-eight days);[71]
be disinfected or decontaminated;
wear protective clothing;
provide information or answer questions about their health or other circumstances;
have their health monitored and the results reported;
attend training or advice sessions on how to reduce the risk of infecting or contaminating others;
be subject to restrictions on where they go or with whom they have contact; and
abstain from working or trading.

Hotel used to quarantine people collapses in Quanzhou, China; at least 34 people rescued so far, up to 36 others still unaccounted for

fedup21 · 07/03/2020 14:36

63 new cases in the UK. British health officials say the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK has risen from 163 to 206, an increase of 63

The Guardian can’t count!

GPwife2411 · 07/03/2020 14:38

The evidence behind social distancing AT THE RIGHT TIME is pretty compelling, so I disagree with that aspect of Dr Sharkawy's post. However, he is not an epidemiologist.

myrtleWilson · 07/03/2020 14:38

perhaps the guardian went to the same maths class as the US TV commentators who managed to announce that in a population of 350m, spending $500m on political advertising - could instead have given each member of population $1m!

lemonjumper · 07/03/2020 14:38

Yep, total maths fail from the Guardian there!

EnidBlyton · 07/03/2020 14:38

oh, I have just read that "asthma sufferers who take regular steroids, which compromise one’s immune system, should take active steps to avoid catching coronavirus because they are on increased risk of developing severe illness. "
oh,
now what

Fourducksate · 07/03/2020 14:39

@WorkWalk. I do think if you suffer from anxiety, perhaps this is not the thread to be on, as for anyone else who is struggling with the discussions.

There are other threads with more positive vibes for want of a better word. I too have closed it on my phone for an hour or two and come back another time. ❤️

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 14:39

Call me, good article. But equally my dc won't thank you anyone when her usual viral wheeze kicks in and we may need oxygen and nebuliser and we can't get near one what then.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 07/03/2020 14:40

@ofwarren that's dreadful. I was only reading yesterday about Brits moved to enforced quarantine in a run down hotel - not that nationality matters, it just literally brings it closer to home.

MotherOfDragonite · 07/03/2020 14:40

I would encourage you all to sign this petition calling on the government to close schools: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300403

It's important this is done now, to prevent further spread, rather than later as a desperate containment measure.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 14:42

Thanks big choc.

My story re Jim is based on possible rl situation.

Nicepud · 07/03/2020 14:43

I'm afraid I wouldn't have much confidence even if the amount if new cases did decrease tomorrow.

I don't believe they are testing enough people, they need to widen the criteria to those that haven't travelled/come into contact with an already confirmed case.

We already have community transmission.

GPwife2411 · 07/03/2020 14:44

I try to be prepared not panicked, alert not anxious. If I feel I'm sliding towards the panicked / anxious I do some self-care and step away.
For me self care looks like:

  • social interaction with other people
  • going for a walk
  • playing board game with kids
  • reading a book
  • phoning a colleague
  • getting mundane tasks done
  • dancing holding the baby to cheesy music
  • watch a youtube video that makes me laugh
  • make a mental gratitude list
  • if I'm really stressed, try to spot anxious automatic thoughts I've been having recently and challenge them with actual evidence / rational debate (e.g. "we (my family0 are all going to die" ... that's about as likely as winning the lottery. Possibly slightly less likely!)

I realise those are all incredibly trite but it's what works for me!

EggysMom · 07/03/2020 14:44

Can anyone direct me to a sound/reputable source for a definition of a 'higher risk person', which I presume includes those immuno-compromised? I keep googling the term but coming up with blanks.

Nicepud · 07/03/2020 14:45

Oh god @EnidBlyton where did you read that?

I'm on a steroid inhaler and a rescue course of prednisolone at the minute.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 07/03/2020 14:46

What are peoples thoughts about eating out/takeaways?

ginandnappies · 07/03/2020 14:48

@EnidBlyton source?

cheninblanc · 07/03/2020 14:48

I can't find the figures for today?
