Boris's first priority is for himself. As long as he's ok. Hence plans to close parliament early Much as I think Boris is a complete wanker, it's actually his responsibility to ensure that government of the country continues even in a crisis.

Furfockssake · 07/03/2020 13:19

And Government can only continue if the prime minister and other senior positions don't get ill and die from CV. Protecting governance structures must be absolute part and parcel of emergency preparedness

Youngatheart00 · 07/03/2020 13:20

Re the doubling every 5 days - is that just based on the existing (limited) test criteria though?! The official numbers are becoming pointless.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 13:25

Big, I agree.

At the end of the day we are all Internet randoms chatting. We don't know who anyone says they are, everyone could be a fantasist really, making up every word. Getting attention.

It's very clear from various posts that some people just want to use this as an excuse to attack the tories . I usually glance over those posts.
Some people can't see the issue at all. I glance over those too.

No ones post is 'anymore important' than people chatting anywhere really. Unless your in an actual conference with experts.

Also instincts do play a part in these things. Churchill very much relied on instincts when he came to being the PM during the war. It was very much his instinct that Hitler could not be appeased or negotiated with.

You can't negotiate with a tiger when it has you in its mouth.

Not every expert gets things right.

Everyone looks at the same data with different glasses /perspectives.

Somewhere in the mix the right thing to do will be there.

All I know is, I'd like these choice without any repercussions to stay off work, and keep my dc home.
I can pretty much guarantee I can get through this without catching it by taking those steps.

But the main thing is on mn, we are all just chatting and I'm very grateful for it because no one seems to be bothered where I work, and I'm loving the updates, the informative links, the level of convo, the vignettes from other places.. Grin

middleager · 07/03/2020 13:25

Not read the full thread so apologies if it has already been mentioned but there is a confirmed case in a school in kent. However it looks as though they are not closing the school yet

Our head says they won't close if they get a case, as per official guidelines though.

I think parents might vote with their feet.

Any Questions covering virus on R4 now

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 07/03/2020 13:30

Also instincts do play a part in these things. Churchill very much relied on instincts when he came to being the PM during the war. It was very much his instinct that Hitler could not be appeased or negotiated with.

This is my worry, to be honest. Hitler was a human. Coronovirus is not and it's rate of increase has bugger all to do with anyone's feelings, opinions or instinct, but is a matter of scientific fact and record (we know a lot already about it from China).

The government should be basing their decisions on scientific advice and on scientific data, not instinct or opinion about how the public is reacting / will react.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 13:32

@BigChocFrenzy
More snide comments directed at me.
I did not say the official was talking nonsense, I said there was no evidence of a daily increase of 50k cases in China. There is still no evidence.
You are free to ignore my experiences, but I fail to see why you need to be so rude.
The irony of your post is that action in China is being led by health officials and I have not advocated not following uk advice. I am just reporting what happened in my city and what seems to be working.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 07/03/2020 13:33

In the U.K. it’s been doubling every 3.5 days so not sure why they said 5 days on the news?

They're hoping the public can't do basic maths? the government can't do basic maths? Neither is good.

Ciwirocks · 07/03/2020 13:35

When is the advice for self isolating going to be updated? It makes no sense to me that people returning from Hong Kong and Singapore are advised to self isolate if they feel unwell when we now have more cases than both of those countries! Does that mean we now need to self isolate if we feel unwell (with Coronavirus symptoms) regardless as to whether we have travelled or not? The guidelines seem to be slow to change when the situation is changing, it took ages for Italy to be added to the list of countries for example.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 13:39

My point was that we do need an injection of human instincts into any situation.

Re Hitler, he had already invaded Poland and shown his hand. Like corona taking Italy down.

Perhaps some experts quite rightly will be saying '' it's a fact, many people will loose elderly parents because there will come a point in this virus when the young who need ventilation will take precedence over the elderly ''

I'd like a human interjection to say, let's try and avoid that stage by closing things down.

Lumene · 07/03/2020 13:40

The government should be basing their decisions on scientific advice and on scientific data, not instinct or opinion about how the public is reacting / will react.

The govt needs to draw on all of these areas to make a decision: scientific/medical advice, judgement (based on best behavioural evidence) of how the British public will behave; moral decisions about how best to use limited resources/do least harm.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 13:44

Ciwie, yes it seems painfully slow.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 07/03/2020 13:44

Hopefully so @middleager
Well that's assuming the child has been in school and not isolating at home since half term (the article doesn't say either way). If the child was in school, then all classmates are at risk along with anyone who taught them. They should all self isolate. I find it quite irresponsible that the official advise is not to close especially as secondary school children do not have the same childcare issues as primary schools so the worry about, who will look after them, is pretty minimal

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 13:47

shanghaidiva It is not rude to say that public health officials will be better to predict that an internet random - which is what we all are

Your reports from China are interesting, but your opinions are like mine or anyone else's - not based on any expertise

GenevaMaybe · 07/03/2020 13:50

Sorry if this question was asked already. Will we have stats at 2pm today or do we wait til Monday?

myrtleWilson · 07/03/2020 13:51

BigChoc It wasn't so much what you were saying about none of us being experts (although we have varying degrees of insight about live with coronavirus) but to me (and appreciate it is difficult when dealing with text) your interactions with Shanghai were hectoring, brusque and dismissive.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 13:53

I admit I have been irrritated by the praise for China's actions:

We should remember that this is a brutal communist dictatorship that imprisons, tortures and murders its dissidents, that carries out massacres and ethnic cleansing.

If it wasn't a military & economic giant, its leaders would be in the international criminal court facing charges of crimes against humanity

Possibly Hitler's Germany would be tackling the crisis even more effectively than the democratic Germany in which I live

It is never better to live under a dictatorship, whatever the crisis
Even if people hate Boris, they can vote him out next General Election
That is priceless

Skyejuly · 07/03/2020 13:53

Hopefully see stats today.

Sunshinesky1981 · 07/03/2020 13:54

They should update the numbers today, I'm sure they did last weekend

Banana0pancakes · 07/03/2020 13:57

Yeah they update on weekends too

tmh88 · 07/03/2020 13:57

Does anyone know if they will release cases to towns again today?

Skyejuly · 07/03/2020 13:59

Probably will so but maybe a day late?

WorkWalk · 07/03/2020 14:02

@Steala I have germ related OCD and my life is living hell. I’m not hardly sleeping and don’t know how I am going to get through months of this.
