Thank you for explaining so another question that is it because if the potential of it them at this is all worn?

Yes, because we can’t risk potentially passing the virus on to other infants (I work in Paeds).

If the child’s test comes back as positive then they and their family (if deemed are appropriate) are treated with Tamiflu.

We also go back through the records and do a contract trace of any other patients and staff the child came into contact with and they too will be started on Tamiflu if necessary.

If some of the contacts were children who have since been discharged then the parents will be phoned and informed.

WhyNotMe40 · 07/03/2020 12:38

I still think there is probably less risk on holiday (apart from the obvious countries) than there is in schools - you can supervise your kids to wash their hands properly. You are able to keep your distance from people. Neither of which are possible in school!

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 07/03/2020 12:40

Not read the full thread so apologies if it has already been mentioned but there is a confirmed case in a school in kent. However it looks as though they are not closing the school yet

My son was in hospital at Christmas with confirmed flu. He's 3. There wasn't sight of any form of additional protective wear at all on any of the medical staff.

ChipotleBlessing · 07/03/2020 12:50

I don’t know why people are surprised it’s young people on the ventilators. Hospitals in that area of Italy are overwhelmed. They won’t be ventilating the older people. The statistics don’t show that young people don’t get ill, they show that with treatment they die in much lower numbers

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 12:52

beardedmum re gyms:

I read commentary by a doctor on gyms saying that sweat wasn't infectious
but still the same risks as in any crowd of being coughed / sneezed on, or touching surfaces with virus
I'll wait for more sources on that, but personally I won't stop going unless we are advised to do so

I'm still going to the gym 6 days per week and I'm 63, living in Germany
However, I no longer shower there, or use the sauna
No lingering for a couple of hours at the coffee bar; I just come straight home to shower & hair wash
Also, from today I'll be putting my contact lenses in at home and wearing bike or lifting gloves the whole time - to be laundered daily

That’s shocking!!!

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 12:53

You might be less at risk on the beach of the virus. You will be more at risk in the airport and the plane.
And yes I can imagine people going on holiday and ignoring any risk.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/03/2020 12:55

I still think there is probably less risk on holiday (apart from the obvious countries) than there is in schools - you can supervise your kids to wash their hands properly. You are able to keep your distance from people. Neither of which are possible in school!

You're ignoring the airports, the transfer, the mixing of people from all over the world, the fact that you have no control over food prep and cleanliness of accommodation, the fact that you could get stranded in a foreign country in isolation and the fact that if you have knowingly booked a holiday in the current climate you may well find that your insurance won't cover any coronavirus related medical treatment you require.

Very foolish idea IMO.

@Queenofmyprinces
Yes, that's what happened to us last year.
My son got admitted to hospital with uncontrollable temperatures and as he is a liver transplant patient they don't leave it to chance.
They swabbed him and sent us home.
We got a phone call the next day to say it was influenza A and we all got given tamiflu.

WhyNotMe40 · 07/03/2020 12:59

Totally agree it is foolish, but I can understand why people are talking about it

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 13:02

And yes Italy are prioritising young people for ventilators, just as the UK will.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 13:06

All the viewpoints & experiences are interesting,
but as soon as someone claims that a public health specialists is talking nonsense about their own subject,
then that poster becomes just an internet random to me and I downgrade what I read from them.

It's fine to say you haven't seen within your own experience what the specialist is saying,
but anecdata from one individual's social circle doesn't trump professional analysis.

Our best hope of getting through this crisis with minimum casualties is if actions are led by public health officials,
based on their professional expertise and years of training & experience

If politicians let their "feelings" and anecdata outweigh professional advice about what to do,
then we're utterly screwed.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 07/03/2020 13:06

Are they releasing numbers at two or stalling to Monday does anyone know?

AvocadoOwl · 07/03/2020 13:09

They released the 2pm numbers last weekend 🤷‍♀️

Namethecat · 07/03/2020 13:10

It's just been said on BBC news that it is expected in the UK to double every 5 days.

PinkyU · 07/03/2020 13:10

I was coming on here to ask about when new numbers were being released, did they release numbers yesterday?

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 13:11

In the U.K. it’s been doubling every 3.5 days so not sure why they said 5 days on the news?

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 13:12

hairy

That's their choice isn't it. But my dc won't have to mix with them if schools are closed.
I'm extremely worried about a new mix of people after Easter hols.

It's just been said on BBC news that it is expected in the UK to double every 5 days.

Wonder what they are basing that on, sounds rather optimistic to me Hmm

The UK government seem very confident that they have loads of control over the spread of the virus, planning the peak etc Confused

fezzesarecool · 07/03/2020 13:14

QueenofmyPrinces Thanks again for explaining the processes it’s really helping to get a balance on how I’m interpreting all the information

Reastie · 07/03/2020 13:17

@Steala I have a variant of a kind of germ phobia OCD. I genuinely feel weird about all the panic etc as this is how I live my life every single day and have done for years. I have a decent stock of hand gel and soap anyway because of that. It’s like everyone is living how I do every day and they’re just realising what it’s like. It’s very strange! It feels like we’re living in a film atm, although I’ve een saying for years it’s only a matter of time before an infectious disease spreads everywhere.
