@CarrotVan But of course 6 year olds can help look after 3 year olds. Not in sole charge. But they can pour cereal and milk out for both, or help with some dressing, just a few simple things that would help if you are not feeling well yourself.

ClashCityRocker · 07/03/2020 11:53

Haven't japan tested relatively few people? I'm sure I read that up thread.

Just back from tesco. It was busy as usual for a Saturday morning. Only loo roll was 16 packs of andrex for £8. No paracetamol, three handwashes left on the shelf and the children's medicines completely picked over.

I'm hoping this panic buying dies down soon. When I was last living week to week £8 was a huge chunk of the food budget.

namechangemania · 07/03/2020 11:54

@Twitney Monday at the earliest now the government are having their well deserved weekend Hmm

mrshoho · 07/03/2020 11:54

@CarrotVan Why ever not? Surely your 6 year old would be able to bake bread for your 3 year old's lunch 🤪

fezzesarecool · 07/03/2020 12:02

QueenofmyPrinces Thank you for explaining so another question that is it because if the potential of it them at this is all worn?

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 12:02

Okay maybe it was just me that had a DC who was perfectly capable of helping out a younger sibling with some tasks. And yes when I was really ill, I would get the older to help the younger have a bowl of cereal or get some fruit. Simple things that made life a tiny bit easier when ill.

Moomin8 · 07/03/2020 12:04

@langbannedforsafeguardingchildren

You hope Boris sees footage of people in Italy in intensive care? And then you think he's going to suddenly be worried about us? Of course he isn't. He's decided to accept collateral damage here.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 12:04

@AvocadoOwl
Yes, you are correct. Started Monday 24th Feb.

DonkeyKong2019 · 07/03/2020 12:07

Japan have the Olympics as motivation for trying to keep the numbers as low as possible through whatever means necessary even if that means not testing etc

hoovermyrug · 07/03/2020 12:08

My mother has decided to go to very near Italy on border this weekend, leaving my dad at home. He has multiple heart issues / failure and very weak lungs. It beggars belief but she has gone. Putting her own self first. I'm livid.

ajandjjmum · 07/03/2020 12:13

Twitney
I think a halt on large gatherings, closing of schools etc. could happen around 20th March. Taking into account the Easter holidays, this should give 4 weeks to shut things down.

Looking at the Sky News models, it's quite interesting to see how shutting up shop too early, could be detrimental, and leaving it too late could be a real issue, in that it would drag on for longer.

But it's a new thing, so who knows.........

unluckyagain · 07/03/2020 12:14

I went to Tesco this morning and no problem buying paracetamol (which I needed) or toilet roll (which I needed). All I saw was people doing their normal weekend shopping.

I'm heading out for lunch in a restaurant with a friend, then meeting DH and some friends in the pub to watch the rugby. Tomorrow I'm going swimming then to a museum with a friend.

In other words I'm living my life. Of course I'm taking hygiene precautions but we can't all just stay indoors. Some of you really should step away from this thread and get on with living. Worrying won't protect you from getting the virus.

I know someone who has it. She's doing ok.

Number12 · 07/03/2020 12:15

@fullofteandneedstopee I am using hand cream, I think cracked bleeding hands (as mine do) is much worse. I've bought some latex gloves to help with the constant washing but my hands do bleed. I've got old lady hands!

teta · 07/03/2020 12:19

#number12 latex makes my hands crack and bleed due to an allergy. So I have to use in latex gloves or cotton Lined ones. Aveeno is brilliant for cracked hands.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 12:21

If they close the schools, I genuinely can't imagine people staying in their houses too. They'd be off out on day trips.

Yep, like the person I know who is supposed to be In quarantine but trotted off to Meadowhall.

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 12:23

My mother has decided to go to very near Italy on border this weekend

The virus isn't airborne, it won't leap over the border.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 12:24

Ime closing schools works if in conjunction with other measures. The only things open in my area were a couple of supermarkets and the pharmacy so nothing to do except stay at home. Also non residents could not enter your compound so no visits from friends and relatives unless they lived in your compound.

Janemarpling · 07/03/2020 12:27

If they close the schools, I genuinely can't imagine people staying in their houses too. They'd be off out on day trips.

Again, a few kids in a park or a house is different to packed corridors, sharing purple pens and the major task of getting 1500 kids to wash their hands.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 12:28

If you are in self isolation in my city, The authorities tape your door shut and put a notice on it informing everyone of self isolation.
Of course you can leave, but am sure there are consequences when you return home...

tryingtoprep · 07/03/2020 12:32

@Langbannedforsafeguardingkids Just catching up with news now. I haven't seen the Italy intensive care video. Seems like the government is desperate to downplay the risks to younger people. They want the public to think it's people on their way out already (I do NOT think that about older people but it's very much an attitude I'm seeing). The age risk starts at fifty. Not old. Then there's the many young people with preexisting conditions. Most are leading normal lives. They're not, as some seem to think, frail.

Unfortunately @Moomin8 is right. Boris's first priority is for himself. As long as he's ok. Hence plans to close parliament early.

GPwife2411 · 07/03/2020 12:33

Technically the virus is airborne - see the NHS letter to medical staff shared on the last thread. But obviously it won't leap miles over the border, it will use people as its vector to do that.

Anyhow, latest happy update from the world of general practice is that patients are stealing alcohol hand gel dispensers / the bags inside from the walls of surgeries.

alloutoffucks · 07/03/2020 12:34

I am coming to terms with the fact that I will probably get it. As will most people in the UK.

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 12:34

Philippines records first community transmission of coronavirus, now has six cases t.co/dLTl7hijYs t.co/JVGS1d3iOJ

WhyNotMe40 · 07/03/2020 12:35

Another thing to consider if they close schools - the kids will mainly just hang out in their own friendship groups. Not the 2000 odd shoulder to shoulder scrum that happens in my schools at every lesson change over, or even the 32-36 I have squeezed into my stuffy classroom (designed for 30) that gets a fresh set of non handwashed bodiezt hourly and obviously not cleaned in between classes...

HairyFloppins · 07/03/2020 12:35

On a holiday Facebook group I am on people are planning on going on holiday if the schools are shut Hmm
