Italy in April. Would you?

Now the whole country is designated as a place that requires self isolation if you visit and later feel unwell with symptoms that may be the Covid 19.
How likely is it that the advice will change to Do Not Go.

OP posts:
BrokenBrit · 06/03/2020 07:34

I absolutely would not go.
I don’t know if unofficial advice will have changed as our country is lax on this, but many other countries around the world are advising against travel.
Equally it may be as widespread here by then too.

WorkWalk · 06/03/2020 07:35

I most definitely would not travel to Italy next month. I think the risk is too great barring an unforeseen miracle drop in new cases.

Buggedandconfused · 06/03/2020 07:36

Definitely not!!

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 06/03/2020 07:37

We should be going at the beginning of April (flights booked ages ago) but have decided it is not worth it.

hoovermyrug · 06/03/2020 07:38

No way.

AltheaVestr1t · 06/03/2020 07:39

Absolutely not. We have flights booked to Germany at the end of March and I’m keeping a very close eye on the figures there. It’s looking increasingly likely that we won’t go.

OffTheShelfElf · 06/03/2020 07:40

Nope, definitely not.

Sarcelle · 06/03/2020 07:42

Also, if you are employed, your employer might not be happy if you knowingly go there, and then have to self isolate on return.

QuitMoaning · 06/03/2020 07:43

We are meant to be going to Northern Italy to visit friends next Friday but have cancelled it. Unliked to get RyanAir to refund but luckily it was RyanAir so not lost too much

End of April going to Southern Italy but via Milan so might need to rethink that.

Then back down to Southern Italy in September but hoping that will be fine. No hotel costs with any of the trips, just flights.

PrettyTricky · 06/03/2020 07:43

Same boat, booked and paid for flights and hotel in Venice in April on a non refundable rate. Not going, but just hoping FCO advice to our destination changes so we can claim on insurance.

zafferana · 06/03/2020 07:43

Depends where you'd be going OP. Northern Italy - probably not. Puglia or Sicily? Well I probably would if I/my family are not in the most at risk groups, because by next month you chance of catching it here in the UK will probably be similar.

HairyFloppins · 06/03/2020 07:43

Nope and I hope flights are stopped to there until it goes right down there.

vera99 · 06/03/2020 07:49

If you did go then the paranoia would no doubt kick in (well it would for me !) and you are far from home risking a lockdown or worse. You don't go on holiday to be a state of near panic.

Helenj1977 · 06/03/2020 07:58

No. I wouldn't travel anywhere. Imagine being stuck in quarantine in a foreign country.

Carrie7469 · 06/03/2020 07:59

No way would I go

KoalasandRabbit · 06/03/2020 08:43

Not sure it's that likely advice will change as hasn't for South Korea yet with 6,000 cases. On a schools thread someone said school running a ski trip to Italy soon and our school is running a Italy trip in June - government currently telling schools fine to go ahead.

It maybe worth checking on the local tripadviser forum for area you are going to how much is closed. I found a breakdown of coronavirus cases in Italy by region before which is useful - DDs trip is to Sorrento, there were 13 cases in the wider region there a few days ago. We are just watching and waiting the UK and Italian figures.

Can be worth waiting before pulling if won't refund now (unlikely) - sometimes flights get cancelled quite late on. I've seen some people cancel lose the money then later cruise / flights gets cancelled. We've got Thailand and Malaysia in summer too and same issue - thought of being quarantined in hospital over there is scary especially if it's one of the kids. There's also question of who pays for that.

FlemCandango · 06/03/2020 09:07

My ds is currently on a flight to Rome. School trip, not cancelled because FCO advice is not barring travel just putting Italy at cat 2 so far meaning that if ds gets the sniffles on his return he will have to "self isolate".

Bloody nightmare for me and dh we have been agonising all week over it. Ds quite gung ho so hopefully all will be well. All fingers and toes crossed, I may need a vat of gin to get through this weekend though.

Personally I would avoid travel to Italy given the choice, but it is worth taking into account that Corona is going to be everywhere anyway.

Bottleofcorona · 06/03/2020 09:09

If the Rise in numbers infected rises everywhere else as quickly as it is doing in Italy then nowhere will be safe, including the UK.

BentNeckLady · 06/03/2020 09:10

Apparently 20% of people who get it don’t show any symptoms so I’m not sure what use self isolating if you develop any cold symptom is.

We were considering going to Italy next month but never got round to booking it as I wouldn’t have gone now anyway.

Thelaughinggnome123 · 06/03/2020 09:38

No

NainAGP · 06/03/2020 09:44

No, we were due to go mid-April but don't plan to now, we were able to cancel the hotels without loss and one of the train trips but still waiting to hear if the other trips will be refundable. Not worth the worry, it'd be a stressful trip if we went.

cologne4711 · 06/03/2020 09:47

if ds gets the sniffles on his return he will have to "self isolate

I didn't think "the sniffles" were a symptom, thought it was fever, headache and dry cough.

Stripeyshirts2450 · 06/03/2020 11:12

It hasn't even peaked yet. I don't understand why you would go? Forgetting the risk you are putting yourself and others at, you will have a terrible time. Ghost town!

Stripeyshirts2450 · 06/03/2020 11:12

Also planes are a hotbed. It's only a few months of not doing stuff.

SetSail · 06/03/2020 11:14

We’re supposed to go over May half term break...no refunds, so we’re just waiting and seeing. I guess...
