Seven new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland this evening, bringing the total number to 13.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about the indirect effects of the virus such as critical care beds (and it sounds like eventually most beds?) are taken up with Covid sufferers.

does anyone have utilisation data for critical care beds in an average week in the UK?

Those who are seriously ill but NOT with Covid are also going to face a much higher mortality risk due to the lack of available care.

unluckyagain · 06/03/2020 08:10

I know someone who has been diagnosed and is in hospital. It was quite a shock to find out.

furrytoebean · 06/03/2020 08:10

unlucky do you know if that person has travelled?

Twitney · 06/03/2020 08:11

Is there a petition we can sign to pressure the government to tell people who can work from home to work from home? It just seems madness not to try and limit the amount of people travelling and congregating where it can be avoided.

unluckyagain · 06/03/2020 08:11

Yes they have.

Wehttam · 06/03/2020 08:11

It will be interesting to see how China deals with Italy. Many Chinese live and work in Italy especially in the workshops of the north making clothing, shoes, bags etc. I would expect strict travel restrictions soon.

I've kept my daughter at home from school today, it won't make a big difference but it's given me at least some sense of control when it doesn't feel like the government are being as proactive as they can. I don't want her school closed only when it's too late.

Cheeseismylife · 06/03/2020 08:13

The link about virus survival is interesting. My parents have a drum of sodium hypochlorite in the garage. I might pop up and pinch some if things get bad.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 08:13

Until now Ive been very calm about this. My approach has been that we are in the best position we can possibly be in the circumstances. We are prepared in the event that we had to stay at home for a while, we have meds if there was illness in the family and I even have a tutor on standby to do online lessons with DS1 who is year 10 if necessary and if school were not running online lessons.

But this morning I've had to pack off DS1 to a London residential trip travelling by train and tube, during rush hour and eating their packed dinner on the bloody train! School have fobbed me off with the "following government guidelines" crap. Not happy. I know loads of people will say "we travel by tube every day" but for those of us who live in the sticks it isn't normal behaviour.

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 06/03/2020 08:15

One of the issues with this disease is it's quite slow from start to finish. So people needing HDU/ICU will need care for weeks rather than days. This means the beds will quickly fill up. It would be easier to handle if people either died or recovered more quickly.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/03/2020 08:16

China already has restrictions in place for people coming from Italy: compulsory quarantine on arrival in China in designated quarantine area for 14 days. You cannot self isolate at home.

ifonly4 · 06/03/2020 08:19

Charlesthekingcavalier - many will want schools closed so they have more element of control over limiting close proximity to many and that fact they have some element of control over hand washing, how clean the environment is.

I work in a school, we've had no guidance, haven't been asked to take extra precautions over hand washing, there's no sanitiser. The children are lovely, but I suspect some go all day without washing hands so germs everywhere. As a member of staff I regularly get sneezed/coughed over, they'll be doing it to eachother I'm sure. We have cleaners in, but it's certainly not a deep clean - you see dirty/dry food on tables, finger print marks everywhere, dirty hall floors where the kids sit, They aren't going to keep distance from their friends etc etc.

KOKOagainandagain · 06/03/2020 08:19

Sir Patrick valance just said on R4 the death rate is really under 1%. So our government agrees with trump's hunches rather than the WHO. Shock

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 08:20

I think someone mentioned this on a previous thread. But surely with all the cases of people being affected after traveling to Italy, it looks likely that many people are catching the virus from brief exposure to someone with the virus.

Surely all these cases can't have been in close sustained contact with someone who has the virus (for instance being within 2 metres of someone for longer than 15 minutes).

ofwarren · 06/03/2020 08:20

Coronavirus updates:

  • South Korea: 309 new cases

I have been asked to volunteer to help out at work, learning a new system and working long shifts outside of my normal hours, due to the virus, but I am really not happy about it, I am so anxious already and the line of work would mean I would have access to information about ongoing cases, would it be selfish for me to refuse to do this additional work due to anxiety issues, I am coping by trying to focus on other things but if I did this work it would be in my head all the time. The word volunteer is basically I received an email saying my manager had agreed I could do this work away from my normal role, but it was the first I had heard of it and not something I am really wanting to do.

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 08:21

Same here. Just posters about travel from these countries and showing symptoms.

Blueberryham · 06/03/2020 08:22

The royals still seem to be out and about going to events. Is this a sign that the risk is still very low?

woodencoffeetable · 06/03/2020 08:23

close sustained contact with someone who has the virus (for instance being within 2 metres of someone for longer than 15 minutes).

bus, train, museum queue
plus (some) public toilets being hole in the ground without hand washing facilities.

middleager · 06/03/2020 08:25

Thanks ofwarren

mamasiz · 06/03/2020 08:25

I asked to work from home for the next two weeks until more info is known about risks for pregnant women and their unborns. There is a report coming out from the royal society for obstetricians and gynaecologists very soon. I also have a little one with respiratory issues that he needs oxygen for every time he gets a simple common cold. We are in a&e with him every two weeks at present. I was told ‘it’s business as usual’ and advised to seek counselling. I’m taking unpaid leave which is a real shame as a) I need the money(!) and b) I could have continued to work, albeit in a slightly amended way. I got more understanding from my precious work when I had pregnancy related issues. I was able to work from home no issue. Frustrating.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 08:26

The reason why a blanket work from home advice has not been issued is because companies aren't even sure that their IT systems could even withstand everyone logging in from home at the same time (at least some of the larger institutions could have issues - not sure everyone has tested out this scenario)

Sorry but this is pathetic. When we're having many deaths 'oh but I couldn't even TRY and work from home because IT systems and it was just too hard to even TRY'. Inability to solve IT problems placed as more important than people's lives. People really don't get this. There is one way to reduce the severity of this and it is minimising contact between people in whatever way we can.

Why not try, and if things break down then you fix the problems. And if that fails, then you go in.
