It seems to me it would be sensible to issue some guidance that people who can work from home should.

Totally agree and it would be the cheapest and easiest way to show the public that the government we should take it seriously and ease some of the people with their head in the sand into the realisation that their lives might be affected.

NotJustACigar · 06/03/2020 06:49

Does anyone have a prediction of when the government might suggest to workplaces that people should be encouraged to work from home when possible? I can do it on a day to day basis but not for long unless an announcement is made.

MarshaBradyo · 06/03/2020 06:53

Working from home is an easy message from govt and would change behaviour for many. Not sure why there are not saying this.

MarshaBradyo · 06/03/2020 06:53

For those who can obvs

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 06/03/2020 06:57

I work remotely and only go into the London office once a month, my hours are also flexible so I can be at home with the kids if the school closes. The office have issued a statement saying to work remotely wherever possible and walk / use account taxis rather than public transport. Everyone has been issued with a box of gloves, anti bac and masks. All events cancelled until further notice. I should add this is a relatively large organisation and they are taking things seriously. The school have also been very pro-active and the kids came home with a letter Wednesday stating the online learning platform was being updated to add additional yr appropriate learning and portals and in the event of a 'possible' closure they would be ready assist with home schooling.

Ciwirocks · 06/03/2020 07:01

The case at alder hey worries me, it’s a bit too close to home for me. I can see people here starting to worry a lot more now around here and keep kids off school. There is already talk on the comments section of the local paper that people are going to cancel appointments for their children and avoid the hospital.

Lou0390 · 06/03/2020 07:02

We are due to go to Alder hey for a routine appointment next week. I'm really not sure what to do now Confused

middleager · 06/03/2020 07:04

Morning.

It's pleasing to see organisations taking this seriously.

Much depends on the manager's view of whether this is a threat though.

Sadly, many are still in denial/dismissive, with no business continuity planning.

We also have a culture of presenteeism, coupled with the stiff upper lip and I find this frustrating.

Thunderpunt · 06/03/2020 07:05

Sorry if this has already been discusses but why is Diamond Princess showing 696 total cases now (on Worldometer) I thought it was 700 originally- were 4 misdiagnosed or something?

middleager · 06/03/2020 07:05

Gosh Lou that is a worry and I hope things become clearer.
Alder Hey and hospitals in general were on my mind last night.

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 07:06

The new UK advice for all people traveling back from Italy to self isolate / call 111, seems too little too late.

Ciwirocks · 06/03/2020 07:06

Lou0390 I would go for your appointment the outpatients bit is well away from the wards and the child will be in strict isolation.

Ciwirocks · 06/03/2020 07:08

Water sheep have you got a link for that? I have relatives who have returned from there who have been told to only self isolate if they have symptoms

LuxLFC · 06/03/2020 07:09

@EnidBlyton I have been wearing normal winter gloves too. I soak them in laundry sanitiser when I get home.

I can't tell you how badly I wish I could work from home! The most annoying thing is I never have anything to do at work, I spend most of the time sitting around waiting for work to be passed to me & then it only takes 5 minutes for me to sort it

TokyoSushi · 06/03/2020 07:10

Good morning everybody!

user34254356 · 06/03/2020 07:11

The reason why a blanket work from home advice has not been issued is because companies aren't even sure that their IT systems could even withstand everyone logging in from home at the same time (at least some of the larger institutions could have issues - not sure everyone has tested out this scenario).

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 07:11

Ciwirocks

I just heard it on BBC news, but here's an online report

metro.co.uk/2020/03/05/anyone-returning-italy-self-isolate-show-coronavirus-symptoms-nhs-says-12356604/

BelleSausage · 06/03/2020 07:11

Are they testing people for community transmission yet? It concerns me that some people are infected without a travel history.

Also, what is the point of protecting people by asking them to work from home if their kids are going to school and picking up the virus there to bring back to them?

Lou0390 · 06/03/2020 07:12

Thank you. We live quite a distance so I think i will give them a call the day before just to check it's still okay to attend. I've been fairly calm about it all but this has rattled me Confused

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 07:13

Apolgies I see the report I linked mentions if they show symptoms. The BBC report didn't mention that. It just said the advice had changed to include all areas of Italy, rather than the specific areas.

cheninblanc · 06/03/2020 07:14

User my dh is currently getting his companies software ready. I can work from luckily but they won't agree it, and my team can't due to patients so it'll be business as usual for us.

BooseysMom · 06/03/2020 07:15

And this is the problem...people who are denying the seriousness of the situation won’t take quarantine seriously, won’t take hand washing seriously...

Very good point

HeyPizza · 06/03/2020 07:15

Belle I was wondering the same thing. DH has a bad cough and now a fever, called 111, but as he's not travelled abroad or come into contact with a known case, he won't be tested.

The official figures are therefore totally misleading - they're only swabbing people who are at 'high risk' - but the virus could be circulating 10-fold in the community, and PHE wouldn't even know that. Crazy.

This is the situation at Wythenshawe Hospital after a patient tested positive for coronavirus - the intensive care unit isn't accepting new admissions

The intensive care unit (ICU) at Wythenshawe Hospital is not accepting new admissions after a person tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week.

Trust chiefs have confirmed the unit is open, but is 'temporarily' unable to admit new patients.

The rest of the hospital is open as normal

MarshaBradyo · 06/03/2020 07:16

WFH just stops so many on public transport and offices. It would slow it down.
