@Blueberryham
No, that’s a sign that whatever happens they will still receive the best medical care possible.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 08:26

I don't think they've said there is no risk from brief contact. Of course there is if they sneeze or cough onto you. But if you're next to someone for a longer period then the risk is greater.

NaturalBornWoman · 06/03/2020 08:27

So read the study on virus survival. I was on biologic drugs administered by automatic injection pen (I've come off recently). About a month ago one of the pens failed so I reported it as per the process. I got several calls about it and expected it to be collected, but then I had an email from DHL advising a delivery from Samsung Bioepis in South Korea. It's a kit to send the pen back to them. It only spent less than 2 days in transit and contains plastic container, plastic bags, paperwork etc. Direct from the hot zone to an immunodeficient patient. I'm not happy, but am I being ridiculous?

cinammonbuns · 06/03/2020 08:29

@NaturalBornWoman early days and obviously not much research but it is a virus. doesn’t seem from other recorded and studied viruses which are in the same coronavirus family that it would be able to survive two days in transit without a host.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 08:29

Sorry but this is pathetic. When we're having many deaths 'oh but I couldn't even TRY and work from home because IT systems and it was just too hard to even TRY'. Inability to solve IT problems placed as more important than people's lives.

Its far from ideal but it is the reality of the situation. DH works for a large law firm. During the school holidays when people are trying to work from home more their systems just can't cope with more people logging on externally. Half the time he gives up and goes in since he literally has no ability to connect but is still expected to log 7.5 chargeable hours to clients.

SistemaAddict · 06/03/2020 08:31

Dd has told me that school had no soap yesterday. She asked and was told they wouldn't have any until next week. It's not good enough at all. I've sent her in with some.
The bus is quieter than expected today.

Thanks to @AllTheProsecco yesterday for the info from Gatley. My app was playing up and wouldn't let me post at the time. Gatley isn't all that far from me.

I'm seeing lots of people coughing all over the place and not into a tissue 😡

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 08:36

For all those companies not even trying to get their staff to WFH now, well they'll be forced to do without those staff when they're ill (for weeks probably because even the mild cases sound dreadful) because they caught it when they had to commute for weeks. Compared to companies who sort out WFH and will remain less affected.

Why are humans so short-term in their thinking? Particularly in the UK, it seems to me.

It's fine if you try and fail, but this attitude where the tiniest justification is given for not doing something that could reduce spread is really dreadful. See also, people complaining that their insurance might not pay out so will go on their Italian holiday regardless....

Youngatheart00 · 06/03/2020 08:38

@mamasiz that is just absolutely horrendous treatment. So let’s get this straight - they declined your WFH request and instead are making you take unpaid leave? What about sick pay?

Fourducksate · 06/03/2020 08:39

@Letseatgrandma. They will write about it, just as in 2017 a study was fine about the Spanish Flu and what lessons could be learnt.

I hope Chris Whitty has seen this!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 06/03/2020 08:40

I was wondering about the advice regarding wearing gloves around shops or public transport and then discarding them once home. Assuming this means the virus could survive on gloves, what about hair and clothes, for example if someone coughed near you, could it be transmitted by you touching your clothes/hair? Sorry if that sounds pathetic!

Youngatheart00 · 06/03/2020 08:41

All this WFH and IT nonsense sums up the bureaucracy and inefficiency in many mid sized/large corporations and the “not my job mate” attitude of many management staff.

For gods sake, would it really be an issue if IT crashed and kicked everyone off? If people are WFH different shifts could be applied so not everyone is logging on at once and I dare say some would be more productive. Most people also have mobile devices. As a PP has pointed out, companies are going to have to deal with a huge deal of sickness which could be reduced / preventable if they take action now.

NcFortuna · 06/03/2020 08:43

I had to post a parcel yesterday and the woman at the counter coughed into her hand and just blithely handed me my receipt with it. I could hear that she was congested. Unbelievable! I said no thanks and walked off! I wanted to tell her to wash her hands for the sake of others but bottled it. I don’t think my flounce went unnoticed though. There were seniors in the queue behind me too, waiting to pick up her flaming germs.

Chinese doctors say autopsies of coronavirus victims suggest the deadly illness is “like a combination of SARS and AIDS” that can cause “irreversible” lung damage even if the patient recovers.

Comenext · 06/03/2020 08:47

@ThankyouPeter
Good point you made:
The criteria of having travelled to an infected country is now not appropriate as we ARE an infected country!
Clearly not everyone who has CV will get tested and this is bound to skew the statistics considerably.

Nicepud · 06/03/2020 08:48

Morning all, had to call gp this morning and the receptionist was a bit nervous about my cough!

I haven't travelled and have no fever though, I am just having issues with my asthma control atm (which is an extra worry on top of worrying).

Dm actually called me this morning to tell me about some local CV news, previously she has just dismissed the whole thing as silly. I see that as progress!

MaxNormal · 06/03/2020 08:49

Chinese doctors say autopsies of coronavirus victims suggest the deadly illness is “like a combination of SARS and AIDS” that can cause “irreversible” lung damage even if the patient recovers.

Tbf if they're autopsying them of course their lungs will be fucked. I dont think they can say at this stage that people who survive will have irreversible damage.

Nicepud · 06/03/2020 08:49

Jesus ofwarren that's terrifying!

weewilliewinkierunning · 06/03/2020 08:50

People in Australia keep posting (and saying in RL) that it's just a virus and everyone needs to calm down, that we'll all get it and build immunity - after all it only effects old people and people with health conditions. I want to kick these people in the head.

BunsyGirl · 06/03/2020 08:50

For those working in schools where no guidance has been issued, what are the schools waiting for? My DC’s school has been issuing advice since the end of January. This has been stealing ramped up as the outbreak has already. For example, this week, hand shaking has been banned. DS1 had a sporting fixture against another school and they were told to elbow bump.

BunsyGirl · 06/03/2020 08:51

*steadily not stealing!

Eeyoresstickhouse · 06/03/2020 08:52

bunsy I work in HE not a school and the only advice we are being given is the standard PHE advice. They are not deviating from that at all.

RhodaCamel · 06/03/2020 08:59

I was watching Dr Campbell’s latest vid and he says that Indian are probably going to hold onto a lot of the ingredients used for many of our meds and as China and India are our biggest suppliers we could soon have a problem with med shortages. I’m concerned for my mum who has Alzheimer’s and only gets one months supply of her meds at a time and my mil who has monthly injections of a very expensive med which is keeping her metastasised liver tumour from growing.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 08:59

Thanks ofwarren I've been wondering about the longer term impact on those who get it and recover (some will have very mild symptoms I'm sure but many won't).

This survivor describes feeling short of breath still after recovering - she says something like 'I cannot walk for a long time because I feel short of breath and need to sit down - and that's never happened to me before'.

Plantherd · 06/03/2020 08:59

Sorry if this has been asked but trying to keep up and having to scan quickly on the previous threads.

For people who are working in care homes will they be fitted/provided with PPE? Unless they already are?

I'm just thinking about potentially any residents who contract the virus and they are either 'well' enough to remain at the care home or the NHS might be too stretched to accommodate them?

Its worrying to think how vulnerable those groups of people are (both residents and workers).

tinytemper66 · 06/03/2020 09:00

Enid...that is me. I imagine I could go into the school and send work to pupils and catch up on marking. Make resources etc. I live 30 miles from school and always drive back and forth so wont need to worry about public transport.
