I think we need to move towards anyone with symptoms need to self isolate at home once sustained community spread has been confirmed. This means workplaces and schools might need to be a bit more lenient with their sickness policies

MarshaBradyo · 06/03/2020 07:18

That was re pp saying why do it if schools still open.

Doglover123a · 06/03/2020 07:22

Decided with all the sponsors and stalls pulling from crufts to not go 😢
I was having some anxiety about it anyway due to flight and train travel in addition to the crowds .

ClashCityRocker · 06/03/2020 07:25

Yes, I think encouraging those who can work from home to do so would be a good idea. Whilst some firms have gone down that route, there's a lot out there who won't as they are 'following government advice'.

cheninblanc · 06/03/2020 07:27

Heypizza I've had a sore throat for a week too. Once the flow of travelling people slows surely they'll have to look at community transmission? They must start swabbing others soon...

ClashCityRocker · 06/03/2020 07:28

They also need to be looking at increasing testing capacity and not having such a narrow range of who gets tested.

I suppose some sort of testing-by-post kit wouldn't work?

Quartz2208 · 06/03/2020 07:30

Nothing yet about working from home from our company I do normally anyway but the systems thing makes sense

Fourducksate · 06/03/2020 07:32

@Doglover123a. I really do think this is the right thing. Crufts is horrendously hot and stuffy, people will have travelled from all over the world too. I went to London last weekend and wasn’t comfortable with it. It’s not as if I had to go either. Some people have no option because of work.

While risks may still be low - or do they keep telling us- it does play on your mind, even afterwards.

Adesignforstrife · 06/03/2020 07:34

Wwyd? I posted a few threads back. My dd has flu symptoms since last Sunday. Is coughing and now saying it hurts her chest when she does. Spoke to Gp yesterday and we have an appointment this morning. We've not been abroad, but have been to some v busy events/places/public transport etc over half term. She does need to see a doctor I think, but I'm v surprised the GP wanted us to turn up there. I'm not sure what the alternative would be, but wwyd? [I'm 99% sure it IS flu, but I think the testing covid regime is unhelpful right now].

ThankyouPeter · 06/03/2020 07:35

The criteria of having travelled to an infected country is now not appropriate as we ARE an infected country! We may have less cases than Italy but we now have confirmed community transmission. It's like saying that people in Italy can't be tested unless they have been to China. The testing criteria should be for people who have travelled to OR are resident in an infected country so I hope this changes pretty quickly.

frumpety · 06/03/2020 07:36

Went out to the shops yesterday , didn't even bother looking for hand gel , noticed the shelves were bare of paracetamol and ibuprofen, well the cheap generic ones at least, plenty of the much more expensive but still the same drug branded stuff.
All the dettol multi surface wipes had gone, although bizarrely all the dettol floor wipes were still there. Both products contain the same compound of benzalkonium, just the smaller wipes have it in a greater concentration, so 0.4g per 100g as opposed to 0.24g in 100g. I think the greater concentration is why the small wipes specify that they also kill virus's including the human corona virus, but can't be certain ?

Now I have realised that I really should get out more, I am planning a nice long country walk this afternoon Smile

EnidBlyton · 06/03/2020 07:37

what would happen if you worked in a school but didnt have school aged children? hypothetically, and the school closed,

Doglover123a · 06/03/2020 07:37

@fourduck thanks for that . It had been playing on my mind. I know if lots of cases come out of it I will be relieved and I know I can go back to work now and not worry about maybe carrying it with me for the sake of a good weekend away .

AnneKipanki · 06/03/2020 07:41

I do not know how to put previous thread on here .

AvocadoOwl · 06/03/2020 07:43

I'm another who has been ill with flu/cold symptoms. Was first ill with fever, sore throat, and dry cough about a fortnight ago and then picked up for a week but yesterday I felt so awful I ate nothing and ended up taking to my bed.

Odds are overwhelming in favour of my virus being a common garden variety but what if it's not? DH commutes on the tube (and he had this virus first) so it's not as though an absence of local cases mean much.

I think the limited testing resources are one of our biggest problems. I'm not worried that my virus is suddenly going to spiral into dangerous territory but I am constantly aware of the 'what ifs' as I go about life as usual. It's currently not reasonable for people like me to stay away from work etc on the remote off chance that a nasty cold is something more sinister; if there was a simple quick test available to everyone we'd be able to know for sure and isolate ourselves accordingly.

Obviously anyone with symptoms should be taking careful hygiene steps to protect others regardless (and not just during a pandemic) but I'd hate to be responsible for unwittingly spreading CV about.

It's frustrating to feel so powerless.

PotholeParadise · 06/03/2020 07:44

WombOfOnesOwn
The biggest thing we want to know is how long the virus can survive on surfaces! If it turned out that 3 days in the sunshine was enough to wipe out the coronavirus, we could take package deliveries in our side yard and just bring them in when the requisite time had passed.

Have a look:

Letseatgrandma · 06/03/2020 07:47

DH has a bad cough and now a fever, called 111, but as he's not travelled abroad or come into contact with a known case, he won't be tested

This just smacks of the government trying to suppress the infection figures so things don’t seem that bad, so it’s ‘business as usual’, and more importantly...so they can keep the schools open!

I can just imagine teens in years to come, writing essays about what the government could have done to prevent this and the reasons why they didn’t.

Wehttam · 06/03/2020 07:49

Morning all. Lots of people on the Tripadvisor forums still insisting on travel to Italy. It’s very difficult not to post a rant on there. The selfishness of some people is actually mind blowing, you can just imagine their compo faces if they get stuck in a quarantine too.

The UK MUSTend all travel to Italy NOW.

Picks up coffee, aaaand breathe..

sudocremanglaise · 06/03/2020 07:49

Finding this thread quite useful and informative, I don’t have much to contribute but surprised myself by feeling a bit nervous when I went out yesterday as it involved bus/train and not just walking. It wasn’t busy, and I eased up, but it hit me that it’s starting to feel very real and present. No reported cases locally but I live in London (inner city borough) so feels like it’s just a matter of time. However I’m on mat leave currently so at least I’m not commuting right now.

Thank you for all of the helpful links and updates.

Sassenach85 · 06/03/2020 07:49

Really getting sick of the stuff being said on social media about how this all night big deal. It’s driving me a bit nuts

GenevaMaybe · 06/03/2020 07:50

I am in Switzerland where we now have 98 cases. Bumped into a neighbour this morning who has just returned from Florence. Her 1-year old is not allowed to go to the crèche but her 4-year old is in school no problem with my DD (sitting right next to her!). What sort of madness is that

SultanasofPing · 06/03/2020 07:51

My workplace have instructed us to work from home on a specific day next week so they can test the IT systems work - seems sensible preparation

fedup21 · 06/03/2020 07:51

all night big deal

Can you explain?

AvocadoOwl · 06/03/2020 07:52

Agreed @Wehttam, the self-entitled cavalier attitude of many towards holidays is really starting to wind me up.

Wehttam · 06/03/2020 07:52

Regarding the 111 thing, could you not say you can’t be certain you haven’t been in contact with a known case.

As clearly this is the fucking truth if you were to have it!
